The NWA TNA Week 303 Preview

This is the last Impact prior to their big Lockdown ppv. So far so good on the main event build...can they make it another week?

Sting & Kevin Nash vs. Team 3D

3 weeks...3 Sting matches. Neat. The build for the Lethal Lockdown match continues here in a big way with the most decorated tag team of all time against a legend...and Kevin Nash. Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on Big Sexy...he hasn't been injured once since returning. Sting will have to do most of the work here...and that's a good thing.

The Motor City Machineguns vs. Scott Steiner & Petey Williams

I'm digging Steiner and Petey. The Guns are always good...but they never win. Are Steiner and Petey on the ppv? I don't think they are...which is strange considering Steiner will be main eventing next month...but whatever. Should be pretty decent.

Consequences Creed vs. Jimmy Rave

This is the final X division Xscape match qualifier for Lockdown...and Creed's return to the company after winning them over with his impromptu performace at Bound For Glory in October. I am all for guys that aren't WWE leftovers coming into TNA. We'll see how they use him and how he does. Rave is also in the match...

Eric Young vs. Black Reign

Whatever. I'm guessing it's a setup for a still unannounced tag match at Lockdown and nothing more. I get a kick out of Super Eric though.

Roxxi vs. Angelina Love

Velvet Sky is the hot one. Angelina Love is not Velvet Sky. Since the Queen of the Cage match was announced, it's good that they'll have a Knockouts match that doesn't feature the big 3... their matches sell themselves at this point.

Other Stuff:

Angle has demanded that Samoa Joe comes to the arena and signs a contract stating that he will retire if he doesn't win at Lockdown.

I think that Jay Lethal is still dating So Cal Val and Sonjay is still doing run ins. Lethal is the definition of a fighting champion, folks. Side note...at this point he'll have been dating Val for like 5 weeks. He better be getting some.

The final Rough Cut for Kip and BG should air as well. So good... soo much better than it should be...

Plus they'll announce the last matches for the ppv... here's a hint... there are like 6 tag teams with nothing announced as of yet...

This is the go home show so we'll probably see some backstage interviews with Booker, Roode, Kim and ODB to push their matches too. I might be alone in this...but I kind of like that they haven't been pushing those matches as hard as other stuff on TV (Young + Kaz vs. the monsters, the other knockouts, the XScape qualifiers) because those 2 feuds have been going for months and people are familiar with them. At some point you'll run out of things to do if you do it every week.

Discuss...and such.

I'm with you in liking the way they've stepped back from some of these big angles. I suspect that's some of this "MMA style build" we're hearing about even beyond the Joe/Angle training stuff. Joe/Angle, Kong/Saeed vs ODB/Kim, Booker/Roode. They've all been kind of put on the back burner, not forgotten but not pushed too hard. The stories are told and its all about the big matchup at Lockdown. So rather than going the typical wrestling route of sticking them in tag team matches and 6 man main events and having them add more drama, they're just announcing the matches and we're waiting for that match. Just like we would with a boxing or MMA match. The draw is the match, and not the build up to it. The VKM match, as much as I don't care about it, is in the same boat really. Its been told with those Rough Cuts outside the ring and in a straightforward build. In all 4 matches cases its the match we're supposed to be waiting for so they're not diluting it by having them face off weekly.

Which frees up the time to build the matches that don't have deep or clear stories behind them. Lethal Lockdown's got a ton of history but the story we've gotten has been the construction of the teams and in Cage's case having to prove his history isn't who he is. And Xscape, Queen of the Cage, and the tag matches we're likely to get are all about the competitiveness of the divisions so they've been getting featured.

I don't know. Seems gutsy to take Joe off TV for a month, to not have the typical Booker/Joe vs Angle/Roode type of matches and to let the non Kong/ODB/Kim women get the TV time. I certainly can't blame anyone if they've been bothered by the absence of the big players and big stories. But personally I think they've kept things plenty active with Angle and Lethal Lockdown and the stories they've put aside were already ready. I think I may even be more up for Booker/Roode since they haven't been in the ring together for a couple of weeks. And if I'm ever going to have any interest in the VKM match not making them annoy me in the ring for weeks is a good way to get it.

EDIT: By the way I just want to say that the very reason I started visiting these boards and the main site years ago was for these previews so its a nice bit of nostalgia to see them back. I was a fan.

Well...thank you.

At least now they give me something to preview. Back in the day I'd sometimes be sitting there with...like...one match announced heading into the show. Those were some really hard previews to write.

I'm working on a proper one for the Lockdown thread that'll go up after Impact, when there are no more spoilers to worry about.

Back to the topic...

Because they chose to focus so much more time to the lower feuds (and also the Lethal Lockdown) and the other matches (Angle/Joe, Kong/Kim/ODB, Booker/Roode) already have so much history...

Lockdown has to have the most buildup from top to bottom of any show TNA has ever put on. There's a story to every match and in some cases (Rough Cut, the unique Joe/Angle build) some damned intriguing ones at that.

They always work hard at the ppvs...and with some decent material to work with for a change...I think Lockdown is going to be something else...

That Matt Morgan promo earlier was pretty good. If he can hold it in the ring, he can be a big player.

Yes, yes they have. That's one thing that TNA seems to do very well. I've always enjoyed their video packages.

I like that finisher that Roxxi does. Something different.

Super Eric rules all!

Kip comes off as a complete ass, and it works really well for him. I'm actually looking forward to this match as I don't know who is going to walk out of this one a winner.

Not the fans. Buildup has been great, but the match will likely suck. It may be passable if they make it a no-DQ brawl.

EDIT: I missed Consequences Creed AGAIN? I somehow missed all his promo vignettes despite watching the show every week, and apparently I missed his match tonight.

I'm sure that my love of the industry 10-15 years ago has a lot to do with what I'm about to say, but I'm really enjoying this main event tag match. I know what people say about Nash, but I still like to see him in there to this very day, and Sting, well, he's Sting. I can't believe how he is still going at such a consistent quality. Then with the Dudleyz, again, I don't mind them at all right now. It's only when they're trying to be mega-faces that I really have a problem with them.

Again, maybe I just want it to be 10-15 years ago again. :P

It's in a cage, I don't think even TNA has a dq clause in cage matches.

Downhome, I agree with you. I enjoy watching Nash as well. I've always liked Sting, and I've said many times, The Dudleys.....I mean 3D are better as heels.

I've never noticed it until you all pointed out how DW and Teney talk through everything, but that last segment maid me sick. We all can see the action going on, but they just kept yelling about who was beating up who. SHUT THE HELL UP. Other then that, the calling of the matches wasn't that bad, and as I mentioned earlier at least they aren't readint he script on camera anymore.

Yeah, don't mind me. I forgot it was all cage matches. I didn't sleep last night and I'm fucking out of it.

I dunno, based on tonight's match, Consequences Creed really does nothing for me. He may grow on me but he just seems kinda blah, especially when in there w/ Jimmy Rave.

Did you see his last match at Bound for Glory? He was thrown in there as an after thought and was AWESOME. You can't always go by TV matches since they are going to be shorter. I'm sure on the PPV he will do just fine. Plus he's got a neat little finisher.

I don't always watch Impact, I only saw the main event on this show, but my favorite example of DW and Tenay talking out everything is when Dustin and Abyss were fighting, and one took the other and put their head in some sort of vice thing. Just the way they talked it out, it was so ridiculous.

YEah I remember exactly that. West was screaming the entire time and actually trying to call out wrestling moves as they fought backstage.

The Joe/Angle buildup was great. Angle comes off serious and Joe looks like a man that will do anything to win. Thank god they got Karen Angle out of this storyline.

For everything TNA does right, they still have utter crap. The whole Steiner/Willams team is just horrible. And what's with them hanging out with that tranny? At least that's what TNA makes her look like. And I just wish they would let the MachineGuns leave.

Was Amazing Kong even on this show? I don't remember. What I do remember is Tenay/West talking constantly over promos and everything. The Opening segment I thought was funny until Tenay/West ruined it.

I am so relieved that Karen wasn't on that show. I actually don't mind her as a performer but I was so scared that she'd be inserted last second into the Joe/Angle story by revealing or teasing her new boyfriend. There's still a chance for them to do it during Lockdown but that was one of the last hurdles I was scared about with this match. I also was worried that the contract signing would end in the cliched fashion so I actually was excited when they just ended civily and there was no fight or broken table.

Creed didn't do much for me and it wasn't a great debut, but he didn't look bad and I did see better at BFG. So I remain interested. I think he's gonna walk out the X Champ and with the silly Creed gimmick gone I really am looking forward to that serious dose of wrestling in the X Division.

Overall it was a good show but not a great one. It was the buildup to Lockdown and the promos and video packages did an excellent job at that. There was some good ringwork from MCMG and Roxxi and the other matches were nice and solid. But nothing that will change the world. But I thought there was very good mic work from guys like Angle, Cage, and Bubba and just general good build.

The Petey/Steiner stuff felt odd and maybe a bit long just because it doesn't seem to factor into Lockdown and the rest of the show was all about Lockdown. But who knows, maybe they're the favorites for that "Cuffed Cage" match which makes Queen of the Cage look perfectly normal. But it felt like something that was out of place on such a Lockdown push.

I enjoyed the show but it didn't leave me with much beyond "I WANT TO WATCH LOCKDOWN!" Which was obviously the goal. If I was watching Lockdown at home I'd probably turn this on at 6 PM to just casually re-watch as preview, because that's really what it was.

Since they seem to be intent on having Lethal and Dutt feud over So-Cal Val/the X-Division title, they should have given Dutt a Hogan-esque gimmick, and then they could have had "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal versus "Bollywood" Sonjay Dutt: the Micro-powers explode!

What's the name of that move Roxxi did to win the match? That was nasty.

Also, I like the way they're building up their matches now with the video packages and all that. It's working for them.

Voodoo Drop or something like that? I thought it looked pretty sick, as well. Reminds me of the first time I saw Victoria use the Widow's Peak.

I like that move. I thought it was going to be some sort of implant DDT variation. It is awesome, and by her doing that move, I'm thinking that she is going to win on Sunday. I don't know why, but I am just getting that feeling, but that would be cool. It can come down to her and maybe Velvet Sky (I hate that name, along with her pornstar teammate, Angelina Love).
