He leaves behind a pair of 5 year old twins and a 10 month old son...

Even if you're not religious, pray for his wife... that's incredibly sad.

This is bad. The guy was only 33 and had a four young kids and a wife.

RIP

BTW the cops have ruled out murder as a cause of death for now. They had to break in his hotel room door to find him. He apparently died in his sleep. They still don't know how he died. I'm assuming he had a heart attack or possibly drugs though I doubt the latter.

This just sucks, it feels so much like Brian Pillmans death in 1997, not to infer any drug issues or anything, but just not showing up, etc. etc.

Another tragedy for St. Louis baseball, my prayers and condolences go out to his wife, 3 children and the rest of his family.

A shame. Kile was a dependable pitcher who had several very good years. After off-season arm surgery, he struggled a bit to start this season, but pitched the Cardinals into first place in what would turn out to be his last start for them. Teammates past and present who were interviewed have described Kile as a great teammate, probably the highest compliment a player can receive.

Tangentially...

"He had four children, twins, a daughter, and an infant son."

The ESPN article explicitly stated three children. It's a tragedy either way.

Not that it matters but it was 3 kids, the twins were one boy and one girl, and an infant son born last August. I hope it was natural causes. Otherwise both his family and this whole country will have to get yet another sensationlized story about a sports star. I hope that it was some undetectable health issue, so that his family will be able to grieve and move on.

Well, the reports so far have suggested it was just a natural thing, but there were no health reasons that he would have died so young. I fear that it may have been drug-related, but perhaps it was just a disease that they never detected. I heard some good things about him a few years back as a possible big-time pitcher, but haven't heard that much since. He seemed like a good guy, but doesn't everyone after they die?

I hope its not steriods... can you imagine what would happen if it is related at all to that? The hellstorm that would follow would be insane. I just hope it natural or something else.

Damn. It takes a lot for me to see a tragic sports story and to have my jaw drop. I don't think anyone saw this coming. If you were to ask people which baseball player would die soon, I think almost everyone would say Strawberry, not Darryl Kile.

Man, I'm not normally a St. Louis fan, but I'm rooting for them to make the best out of this situation and their season. I'd say playoffs, but you know there is gonna be a season-ending strike.

Man, baseball is going through some rough shit right now.

I turned on ESPN radio just to get the score of the World Cup soccer game, when the talking heads on the show were all solemn and down, then they switched to the press conference with the GM of the Cards. I didn't know who it was. They mentioned Dave Veres' wife. I had a feeling that it wasn't Dave Veres, because I didn't think they'd make a HUGE deal out of a 2nd rate releif pitcher dying. Then they went to break, and I found out it was Darryl Kile. JESUS CHRIST. Why is it that the good guys of the game, like Kyle and Jack Buck die, but serious coke fiends, and all around assholes like Darryl Strawberry are allowed to live? Cruel and unfair.

At least they weren't in Philly, the fans probably would have booed Kyle for not making a start, or would have ripped him for some asinine thing.

Well, they die in threes......Buck, Kyle, ????

Ann Landers died today as well. There's your number three.

My prayers and condolences go out to Darryl Kile's family.

I was thinking the same thing today. And you just KNEW a shit storm was coming starting with the Caminitti and Canseco crap. Not saying it was steroid related but the thought did cross my mind.

Plus, and I hate to sound like Phil Mushnick here but this is true that it'd probably would take an unexpected death for the baseball world to wake up to this problem.

I mean think aout it, the media just doesn't question, nor does it probe, unless its to continue harping the "We should be able to ask them if they are taking them or not" bull shit style witch hunt instead of finding the root cause and looking there (High school and college athletes drop like flies ever YEAR in this country BTW)

Anyway, thats a tangent for another time, at least not untill we know for sure about Darryl Kile's lasts moments on earth

Steve

I'd say its likely to be a heart attack or stroke. Darryl Kile's father died at 44 from a sudden aneryusm (sp?)

That makes me feel better about the whole thing. I hate to talk about how great some guy who died was then find out it was because he took all kinds of drugs or whatever.

If it was drug related, especially steriods, the good thing that would come from his tragic death would be some sort of regulation and testing for them in the game. Alot of people would be seeking help as well. Its so pathetic that it would take something like that.

However the anyurisum is the much more likely possibility. The early death of his father would be an indication of a history, although I had thought i heard earlier that there was no family history about anything like this. Maybe they were only talking about heart problems.

I can only hope that it is quickly resolved so that we can mourn with out and sort of international scandel.

Pitchers usually aren't the ones to use steroids... they need their arm flexibility and couldn't afford to beef up too much.

Drugs are unlikely, there would have been evidence.

I think it was probably an annyurism, now that it was revealed that his father died of that. It would make sense.

It definitely is true that people go out of their way to praise a dead person, but Peter Gammons' article made me think that Kyle really was a great guy. His mentoring of young pitchers on the Cardinals is great in my eyes, he stuck up for Ankiel like nobody else did. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt... the Cardinals, the city of St. Louis, baseball, and humanity seems to have lost a great person.

Peter Gammons is hardly the person to tell if someone is a good person or not.

Either way,it's a tragedy.

It looks like he had 80% blockage. The final cause of death won't be known for a few weeks.
