Guest Michael Joel Benoit Report post Posted July 6, 2002 Soccer doesn't have a BIG HISTORIC OR breakout star that people can cheer for. To many people, including me, it features a bunch of forgeiners from other countries. Not since Pele, has people cared about soccer. I don't like soccer and don't understand why it is so damn popular in other countries. What is so exciting about a bunch of guys in sweaters kicking a ball back and forth into nets. And 45 minute periods are TOO long. Then again, many people ask wrestling fans why is it so exciting to see a bunch of sweaty muscular men in their underwear pretend to fight each other doing the "same thing" so I might be hypocritical. Guest Michael Joel Benoit Report post Posted July 6, 2002 And remember, Golf didn't become popular again until Tiger Woods won the Masters in 1997 and only because he was black/asian and non whites are not common in golf. If the U.S. wins the next World Cup in Germany in 2006, then we'll care.

There are many big soccer players that are house hold names even when the family has little knowledge of soccer, like Ronaldo, David Beckhem, and Roberto Baggio and a few others, and you don't understand it, like most Americans/Canadians because you can't accept the concept of "defence" rather than "high scoring for attention span". And 45 minutes isn't long, because its 45 minutes straight, no commercials, so its as long as about 3 innings in baseball, almost 2 quaters of basketball, almost 2 quaters of football. A hockey period takes about an hour to play with all of the commercials.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted July 6, 2002 We can accept the concept of defense, but when there in nearly no offense we fall asleep. And I've only heard of Ronaldo because I work with a Brazialian guy who has a hard on for him. The others I've never heard of.
Guest caboose Report post Posted July 8, 2002 First Of all it's not Soccer. It 's FOOTBALL! If America's not gonna take it seriously, they don't have to rename it as well. Whatever you call, Football/Soccer Owns. No other sport captivates the world more. Not even the Olympics cause as big a fuss as the World Cup. Face it, Football/Soccer is the grandaddy of them ALL. Sorry if I sound like an idiot. But DAMMIT I love Football.
