Well I've got a second interview on Friday. I've been told by a lot of people that if you make the second interview you've usually got the job, as long as you don't horribly screw it up.

End of 2007 through current 2008 has been nothing but a rollercoaster ride for me when it comes to jobs.

 

Nov. 2007: Laid off (Two days before my birthday.)

 

Jan. 2008: I get a job with a temp agency as a collections agent....only to realize that the job was a temp job the day after I started.

 

March 2008: Job that laid me off in November calls me and asks if I want to come back, I do and begin working two jobs for the month of March.

 

March 2008 (end of March): Temp job ends. Now only working one job.

 

May 2008: Laid off.....again by the same company that laid me off in November.

 

May 2008 (End of May): I get a job through another temp agency...only to realize I'm not strong enough/Fit enough to move heavy ass windows and sliding glass doors and door frames by myself. I leave the job so I don't risk injury.

 

June 2008 (Today): Verizon Wireless is going to hire me as a Customer Service Tech Agent.

I'm in the midst of a job search, however my degree while a Communications degree is concentrated in Entertainment Studies which really I guess makes me eligible to be an assistant or something. Unfortunately, it seems that everyone requires at least a year of experience in the industry, which doesn't make any sense for entry level work.

I got a job as a Coordinator with UC's registrar office in early May following graduation from college, I'm going to UC law in the fall. It doesn't pay much, 16.00 an hour, but I love what I do. I work 8-4:30 mon-fri. and it is easy as hell. A few times a day a potential student comes in, I tell them about class requirements and what college is like, how to register. Also, I do degree audits, send transcripts and contact professors over issues. I do about an hour of actual work, the rest of the day I walk around campus, go to the food court, annoy the ducks by the lake etc...

 

The thing is I may like it too much, I love being on campus, I love being around college kids. It makes me question going to law school. If I stay here and move up through administration it would be great, as being in administration with a college is easy as hell, most of my superiors work 8:30-3:00, and have little to no stress in their jobs. However, I'd only end up making 50,000-60,000 if I stay in college administration, whereas if I get my law degree my dad could get me a job at P&G making a lot more. What's worth more: Money-but working 80 hours a week with stress, Less Money-dicking around at college in a stress free job?

 

 

Also, Dama if you're looking for a career to get into, ever considered being an Air Traffic Controller. You need a 4 year degree, or work experience. You take a test, if you pass they train you in Okla. City for 6 weeks, then you're placed somewhere in the country by the FAA. You are a fed employee, and will make scale to the equivalent of 125,000 per year after about 10 years on the job. You'll get paid for training, and then start off around 37,000 per year. With your degree you'd at least get in to take the test, with a passing score you'd have a good career, not just a job. My friend did it last year, he's making about 45,000 this year. Well Enterprise called today and.......*drumroll* scheduled a third and final interview! ARGH! I thought the second interview was it and I was getting ready to get hired. The person who I did my onsite view with told me I was hired and they'd call me Monday or Tuesday (she didn't have the authority to hire me, but i figured she'd at least have insight). Now I have to wait till Friday to do another interview.

 

I suppose if I've made it this far there's a good bet I'm getting hired though.

Mainly I rent people cars. I make sure the car is ready to go. It's kind of routine. They come in, if they have a reservation you pull it up and see what rate was quoted and then get their form of ID and form of payment and then you print out the contract. You take them to the car and go over the policy with them and send them on their way.

 

The salesmanship comes in trying to sell them the extra insurance (destroy the car and bring us the mirror back! we'll take it!) and trying to get them to get an upgrade if they come in complaining about the car size.

 

Most of the upgrade stuff comes from dealerships. The dealership will pay for a certain size car, and they don't want that car. So you just say "Hey for only 10 extra dollars a day I can get you in something bigger." Usually you say it in a better way than that though.

 

 

The only moral problem I have is that I'm basically ripping people off all day. If you come in without a reservation and we don't have many cars on the lot then you're about to get raped out the ass for that car. We went as high as 69.99 a day for a small car the other day. It was because we were sitting thin and had some reservations that needed to be taken care of.

Also, if you book the reservation online the day before you'll get a much cheaper price than if you tried to reserve it that day. A dirty trick they do is that the internet usually shows we're sold out that day if you try to reserve and pick up the same day.

So basically if you don't reserve a day in advance you have to become a walk in customer that's going to get taken.

 

I felt kind of bad for this guy the other day that had seen a rate online, but he didn't print it out. So he came in and we didn't have any proof he had been quoted a cheaper price. So we had to charge him like 180 bucks for his 4 day rental as opposed to the 87 he'd read about. If he'd yelled and screamed then that would've made me feel better. Instead the dude just took it. He looked so forlorn about it too, because he needed the car.

But I helped him out. I was able to extend the weekend special so he only had to spend like 140 for the car. Then we have a policy where you bring the car back with the same amount of gas it has when you took it. Well, the car was on full but I wrote on the contract it only had a 1/2 tank. So I gave the dude a free half tank of gas. He was really appreciative of that. Then I sold him the extra insurance and I have a feeling he's going to fuck the car up. He was like "So, I can do anything and I'm covered?" and I was like "As long as you aren't drunk or racing you're covered." Yeah he's probably going to fuck the car up, but oh well. He bought the insurance!

 

Rental cars are a huge rip-off and you spend all day ripping people off. You're like a lesser used car salesman. But, it pays well and is pretty easy so I'll do it.

You might want to try UPS. You'll have to start out doing package handling for a little while, making something like $9.50 an hour. How long it takes to become a driver depends on the location, from what I've heard. But once you're a driver, you're pretty much set.

 

Factoring in overtime hours, after a couple of years as a driver you'll be pulling in around $70,000 a year with full benefits.

 

I'm still in college, also a majoring in journalism (sports writer as well), but like you I see that the future of print journalism is pretty shitty and I'm not sure if I want to take my chances finding a high paying magazine or Internet job. So I've been doing a lot of research on places like UPS.

No you're not. If they don't need the car they don't get it -- especially if they want to make a rental the day they enter your store.

 

UZI: I told Dama this a while back during his journalism days. If you want to get into the print world, study other factors of the communications industry: graphic arts, broadcast, pr. And you will have a much better chance making $70k with UPS than you will writing for a magazine.

That failingenterprise website still makes me laugh. It goes on and on about how you don't make any money at all and work long hours.

I really don't see the problem with working over 40 hours. 50 hours really doesn't bug me that much at all. And I'm being compensated nicely for it so I don't care.

Also people on that website complain that they work for peanuts. Well 30,000 is the starting pay and IMO that's pretty good in Oklahoma. My last job was only 22,000. On top of that your pay goes up as you advance in the company. If they have a problem with the pay maybe they never advanced and are just disgruntled?

 

The thing I'm liking about Enterprise is that you don't have to stay in one position. Move up to assistant manager or branch manager. Don't like that? Become an area manager. Don't want to rent cars? You can sell cars. Don't want to work around cars at all? Work in the office doing human resources, accounting, etc. Like meeting new people? Become a recruiter.

 

I really don't see how this place is just so horrible to work. Plus you get experience doing sales, customer service and working in a business office environment. I'm sure I can parlay this into a much better job down the road with the experience I have from this on my resume.

I know a few guys that took their experience at Enterprise and used it to get a high level jobs at Chase Bank and Bank of America.

It's hard finding a job that you're qualified for there are that many entry level jobs out there. I graduated with a BS in Business Administration and while there are a lot of jobs out there, I am not really qualified for a lot of them. I found a part time job that is in the industry that I want but my parents don't like it.

I had an offer for video editing at a job for a porn company in Miami once. No, it wasn't Bang Bros., that would've been too much for me to pass up. I decided not to do it, because, fuck, I need something for a demo reel, and that wouldn't exactly be a good example, now, would it?
