Quantum of Solace

Recommended Posts

I liked it a bit more than I thought I would. Sure, not as good as CR, but as a continuing piece is was more than enough. The chase scene on top of the building was a lil bit too bourney for my liking, but they were consistent with Bond being a blunt object and just steamrolling himself to stop the baddie. Though would it kill them to give him a sprained ankle or something of a hurt back?

One thing: If Quantum is to be taken seriously as a villainous group they need some better guys. Bond villains typically aren't such realistic sorts. Where's a Blofeld, Goldfinger, or Dr. No? Or even Rosa Klebb? There's nothing especially notable about Dominic Greene....he's just a Eurotrash heel that could be in XXX. Ditto Mr. White.

After seeing Get Smart I wouldn't mind seeing Khali as a Bond henchman villain. He could be the next Jaws if they play their cards right.

Well, I think Quantum is a fitting villain for the times, in a Syriana kinda way. Them saying a member of Quantum is an advisor to the PM is fairly significant and puts into question where the loyalty of Mi6 should lie. The idea of bureaucracy being, in and of itself, a villain is pretty compelling, though difficult to leave in the desert with motor oil.

I liked the

Goldfinger-esque 'oil' killing of Fields. HA!, "Oil Fields"! I get it now.

. That was nice.

I also apparently need to pay better attention to things as I didn't even realize the organization was called Quantum. I think I did hear them say it and ignored it, because I badly wanted the group to be called SPECTRE. I recall M being cut-off as she was about to say the group's name.

You know, I don't think the group was ever called Quantum all that much in the movie. It was more just something everyone sorta knew going in.

Thoughts on the next movie:

--Hopefully they bring back Q and Moneypenny, since the series just isn't the same without them. Anyone can be Moneypenny that is half decent, but Q is more of a problem since Desmond Llewelyn IS Q to most people.

--What is up with Barbara Broccoli constantly wanting to bring back the female characters? First it was the hideous notion of a Jinx movie with Halle Berry, then a faint rumor of Eva Green doing a flashback type cameo in this new flick, and now for whatever reason there's a rumor that they want to bring back the Bolivian chick for the next movie? For what possible reason? I can maybe see a brief cameo

with Bond finally tapping that ass since he didn't in QofS

, but where else would she fit in?

--Advice for Daniel Craig: Dude, lighten up. It's a Bond movie, not Dostoievsky. No more mentions of Vesper Lynd in the next movie, no more brooding bullshit, let's just see the devil may care agent we know and love. It worked well in the origin tale Casino Royale, it was tolerable in Quantum, but it will be tedious going forward.

--In the next movie can we please have the spotlight and gun barrel back at the beginning where it belongs?

--Lastly, I nominate "Risico" as the title of the next movie. It's the last Fleming story title that sounds decent, since The Hildebrand Rarity is too dull and The Property of a Lady sounds like a Merchant/Ivory production starring Emma Thompson.

We probably won't have to worry about that. His

dropping Vesper's necklace at the end

says to me that she's out of his mind for good and won't be mentioned in future films.

The more violent and edgy Bond worked well in Casino Royale since it was an origin story, but I too don't want to see Bond like that in every movie. This also goes for his antagonistic relationship he has with M in the new movies, as it too worked well in Casino Royale since he just got promoted to being 007, and I can see why he would have problems with M at first, but I don't want to see that in future films either. Also, I actually liked the other choices that were rumored for Bond before they cast Craig. I like Craig as Bond, but I think Hugh Jackman, or Clive Owen would have been better. I kinda wonder why they never thought about Christian Bale? I think he would have been a good choice for Bond.

The bad guys referred to it as Quantum once I think, and then M did at the end. That was all I'm pretty sure.

I liked the movie a lot, and I didn't mind it being darker and the more violent Bond since it all made sense with the storyline. I'm really liking the multi film arc that they're building with this series.
