Box Sets Vs. Individuals

I was pondering over buying the DVD Cowboy Bebop box set when I realized that buying the DVD's individually would cost me 50 more dollars. Maybe I'm just missing the concept of the box set but that seemes kind of a suprise to me. Has this happened to anyone else or am I just a moron?

What exactly are you surprised about? That the box set is really expensive or that individual DVDs are? Most Anime DVDs are really, really expensive, considering they have so little material. For example, some Kenshin DVDs go for 45 minutes tops, and go for $22. Same with some DBZ movies of similar lenght. On the other hand, I paid $20 for the Wrestlemania 2000 DVD and it's 7.5 hours in lenght.

I always assumed Box sets were cheaper than buying individual sets, but Anime box sets still go way more expensive than normal. Take the X-Files box sets. You can find some of them at $100 and they have 24 hour-long episodes and tons of extras. Whereas a box set for say, Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop go for $150 and have only like 15 half-hour episodes and a few extras here and there.

So do the numbers and make your own conclusion. If you really like the entire series I'd suggest you get the box set. Still, I'm surprised that you say buying individually would cost you $50 more. The entire Bebop series go for like, 5 or 6 DVDs tops. Make that $22 a piece, how's that more than $150 for the box set? Unless you're buying a used set or have found somebody that sells it for less.

I'm not into anime, but I imagine their DVD's are more expensive simply because they are foreign. I draw this conclusion, because EVERY foreign movie seems to be way more expensive than it should be.

well I found Robotech sets of 3 DVDs go for $24 while singles go for $9

what is so frustrating is that some martial arts DVDs can go as high as $50 at Suncoast.

Well it also doesn't help that Suncoast sucks on many levels. Horrible prices and not very good selection.

 

Also that "foreign movies are more expensive" argument isn't that accurate. Imported Foreign movies are usaully much more expensive but they aren't talking about imports. Foreign movies that are sold in the states really aren't more expensive then any other DVD.

 

The foreign thing wouldn't make anime dvds expensive. However the fact that most anime isn't mainstream and mainly gets "cult followers" as fans could make them more expensive.

True, but the box sets come with an "extras" DVD. Same thing holds true for the Transformers box set vs. singles...

sometimes the Extra DVD are worth it such as showing pilot episodes or movies but most of the time its just filler like comic book covers or clips of fan conventions.

Usually teh box sets ae way cheaper than buying the individuals, like the Bond movies. But at Best Buy I noticed that teh Superman box set was actually more exopensive than the total of the four inividual movies, it was only like $2 but I thought it was strange.

I always buy the box sets because I'm crazy when it comes to collecting stuff, even if I don't really like a movie in a series I still buy the set just to have the whole collection.

Well it suprised me that I could get the 2nd Season of Buffy which has 18 episodes on 6 discs for $36 (I had a $10 discount on Amazon, but still $45 isnt that bad compared to what Sapranos or other TV box sets are going for. Im a huge X Files fan, but 100 bucks per season is too much and I haven't seen them on Ebay or Half.com for less than 80 which is still a bit too much for me. I'll wait a few years...

I know what you mean. Still, I MUST have the Star Trek: TNG Box Sets. BTW, how much do they cost in the US? They go for around $130CDN at Future Shop here...

115? Haysoos Christo! That store is trying to rob you. Any of the big name stores like Best Buy and Circuit City have it for $45, but i don't know if you have stores like that.

 

You can get it from amazon.com for $50 including shipping.

 

If you don't like amazon.com look on ebay or some other online store.

I don't think that I have ever seen a entire 22 episode season for as cheap as Buffy...although the SImpsons aren't that expensive. Fox Home Video rules.

I'm assuming that's 115 Canadian. Check your friendly neighbourhood comic store, they should have it for less than $100. Or just go to an independent DVD vendor, and see if you can negotiate a price.

We've got Future Shop - Best Buy is coming soon - but they don't carry much in the way of animation.

Best Buy has an Amine section in the two stores that I go to. So they do have it, I don't watch that stuff but they have a fair amount of it. Check Bestbuy.com.

As for Animé box sets, they will always be expensive since there is a cult fanbase...I think the new Evangelion box set is well over 100 dollars US.
