MLB Awards Thread

Recommended Posts

Let's give this a whirl.

From another thread.

NL MVP

1. Albert Pujols

2. Johan Santana

3. Chase Utley

4. David Wright

5. Lance Berkman

6. Hanley Ramirez

7. Geovany Soto

8. Carlos Beltran

9. Carlos Delgado

10. Tim Lincecum

AL MVP

1. Joe Mauer

2. Dustin Pedroia

3. Grady Sizemore

4. Alex Rodriguez

5. Josh Hamilton

6. Nick Markakis

7. Justin Morneau

8. Brian Roberts

9. Kevin Youkilis

10. Carlos Quentin

Mauer is on the verge of winning the batting title, as a catcher. Virtually no catcher has ever done it, and it will be Mauer's second. Pedroia has an ungodly number of doubles and is 20/21 in stolen base attempts.

NL Cy Young

1. Johan Santana

2. Tim Lincecum

3. Cole Hamels

AL Cy Young

1. Cliff Lee

2. Roy Halladay

3. Mike Mussina

NL Rookie of the Year

1. Geovany Soto

2. Joey Votto

3. Jair Jurrjens

AL Rookie of the Year

1. Evan Longoria

2. Mike Aviles

3. Brad Ziegler

This was a real tough one. Armando Galarraga, Alexei Ramirez, Joba Chamberlain and Jacoby Ellsbury are also deserving candidates.

NL Manager of the Year

1. Charlie Manuel

2. Lou Piniella

3. Jerry Manuel

AL Manager of the Year

1. Joe Maddon

2. Mike Scioscia

3. Ron Gardenhire

Evan Longoria deserves more MVP looks, you guys. Statistically he's no where near the other guys, but he's the catalyst to the biggest turnaround in Major League Baseball history.

In what way is he the catalyst? Guy had a fine season, but it was the improvement of the pitching staff, including the acquisitions of Garza and Percival combined with the unbelievable turnaround of the infield defense that transformed them into contenders. On the offensive side of the equation, Carlos Pena rebounded from a slow start to be the team's offensive MVP.

The Longoria love is sappy sportswriter stuff. He had an excellent rookie campaign and is a star in the making, but he was only one piece of the Rays puzzle this season.

Good to see the Pujols love on here. I hate hearing the "the MVP has to elevate his team to the playoffs" garbage. 86 wins on a team that I thought would be hard pressed to win 70 is definetely MVP worthy.

But the Cards won more games than the Dodgers. It's sort of stupid to fault them for coming up short because they played in a really good division.

Besides, who cares what Pujols says. Guy's been dicked out of 3 or 4 MVP trophies already. Can't we just give it to him for being the best player in baseball this year by a country mile? It's not as if there are any strong candidates from the NL playoff teams anyways.

Hey, his words, not mine, that's all. I think he's probably the MVP, for whatever little that's worth. I've soured on my Carlos Quentin MVP talk for obvious reasons, that being that in his effort to show the fire and the passion like a certain erstwhile White Sock, he threw a temper tantrum and broke his wrist, resulting in a playoff push featuring DeWayne Wise. Different outcome if CQ is there. I generally like him, by the way.

Might as well use this thread for actual winners too. I didn't bother to look up the schedule for announcements, but they should be starting any day now.

In the mean time, Baseball Prospectus is rolling out the winners of their Internet Baseball Awards. These are voted on by those who frequent the site. American League winners were announced today. One would presume that the NL will come tomorrow.

I'm sorry guys, the more I read people here name Ron Gardenhire MOTY candidate, the less I take the entire thread seriously. The fact is, you guys just WON'T recognize the actual best manager of the Central this year.

Let's see here:

Ron Gardenhire- People here picked his team to compete for the Central, either finishing second to Cleveland or finishing first. Ended up finishing second on the 163rd day, basically living up to people's expectations. Has two MVP level players on the team in Mauer and Morneau. Both played most of the season.

Ozzie Guillen- Picked to finish 4th or dead last in the Central. Ended up winning the division on the 163rd day, exceeding preseason expectations. Has only one MVP level player (a guy who just emerged as that this year) in Quentin. If Quentin was still around, do you guys seriously think Gardenhire would have had that chance to win the 163rd game? Doubtful.

I'm not here to say that Ozzie should win the award, that award should go to either Maddon or Scioscia (sp?), but Gardenhire should be nowhere on that ballot if Guillen isn't.

People picked Minnesota to compete with KC for dead last. Gardenhire had a rookie centerfielder fill in for a perennial, traded away the best pitcher in baseball, and fielded one of the most inexperienced teams in baseball. You don't know what you're talking about. No one picked Minnesota to finish first, don't be ridiculous. Everyone picked Detroit or Cleveland. I understand why you'd pick Ozzie over Gardenhire, but to say that people picked the Twins to win the Central is some Straw Man bullshit.

I can't find the MLB predictions thread that I thought existed, but here's a thread that shows you how little faith people had in the White Sox:

http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...t=0&start=0

You can't tell me that the White Sox did not vastly outperform what people in that thread was expecting. And you're lying if you are actually trying to tell me that people were calling for the White Sox to place better than Minnesota. Flat out lying.

But it doesn't matter. Ozzie could lead the White Sox to a 173-0 record en route to a perfect season and a World Series championship, and people will try to find a way to give the MOTY to Ron Gardenhire. Guy just gets more leeway for no reason other than because Twins compete year in and year out.

I absolutely picked Chicago to finish ahead of Minnesota (read: http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...hl=predictions), as did most everyone else. Most people expected Minnesota to be really bad, like last place bad after they traded Santana. The Sox overperformed expectations too, but let's not change history based on the way things ended up.

Gardenhire was able to work five inexperienced pitchers into a capable rotation and turned underperforming prospect Carlos Gomez into a legit centerfielder. Nothing against Ozzie, but Ron Gardenhire did an excellent job with a really mediocre team this year.

NL Gold Glove winners:

P Greg Maddux, Dodgers

C Yadier Molina, Cardinals

1B Adrian Gonzalez, Padres

2B Brandon Phillips, Reds

3B David Wright, Mets

SS Jimmy Rollins, Phillies

OF Nate McLouth, Pirates; Carlos Beltran, Mets; Shane Victorino, Phillies

Most of these look okay, with the exception of McClouth. He's one of the worst centerfielders in the game.

I think those who discounted the White Sox gave them too little credit for their offseason moves, which hurt the club long term but gave them a short term boost. The perception is that Gardenhire did more with less. I gave Gardenhire the third place vote, but I do think Guillen is a fine manager.

National League Gold Glove Award Winners

1B: Adrian Gonzalez

2B: Brandon Phillips

SS: Jimmy Rollins

3B: David Wright

OF: Carlos Beltran

OF: Shane Victorino

OF: Nate McLouth

C: Yadier Molina

P: Greg Maddux

Nate McLouth? I'm sorry, but the notion that the Pirates allowed the most runs and doubles in the league despite the gold glove defense of their center fielder is ridiculous.

I looked at the Fielding Bible plus/minus lists for center field. Beltran was second behind Carlos Gomez with a +24, McLouth was last with a -40. On their 3 year chart they had Beltran first at +59 and McLouth last at -49. I guess to win the Gold Glove you have to be either the best or the worst.
