The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

You could go see the Dayton Dragons, they're at home that day. Not exactly on your way but it'd only cost you an extra hour travel time, tops. Fifth Third is a really nice ballpark, too.

Josh Bard is reportedly on his way back to Boston, agreeing in principle to a one-year contract for $1.6 million. Bard, if you remember, had a cup of coffee with Boston in 2006 before being dumped unceremoniously for his inability to catch a knuckleball. That led to the infamous police escort that ushered in the second Doug Mirabelli era.

I would have preferred John Smoltz, but I can live with Brad Penny. He was terrible last year and there are a lot of red flags, but I know the Sox have been doing their due diligence on him all offseason. He must be in okay shape to offer that sort of contract.

The Orioles signed Mark Hendrickson.

They dumped one crappy 6 foot 7 pitcher and picked up a crappy 6 foot 9 pitcher, 2 more inches of crappieness..I cant wait!

I guess you could say the Orioles tripped over themselves to get him. Or I guess you could say they sure didn't balk at the chance to sign him. Or maybe you could say this will keep the O's from losing their footing in the AL East race. Or maybe you could say that one time Mark Hendrickson slipped and fell while trying to pitch and it was really funny.

Red Sox trying to re-acquire Hanley Ramirez

Article indicates that they've offered Ellsbury and Buchholz, but Florida's not biting (I don't blame them). Speculation is that they'd move him to centerfield if a deal went through. That makes sense given his defensive shortcomings. Wonder if they can hash out any sort of deal here.

I'm not one of those fans that thinks every great player should end up on the Sox, but I am glad that Theo's willing to be creative to upgrade this team.

That would be a steal. Ellsbury was awful last year and seems to still be living off the good feelings from October of '07. Buchholz unfortunately threw that no-hitter making him Cy Young to some people. After the game in Chicago this season, I had seen enough of him until he got further seasoning with the Paw Sox or hell even Portland. From reports his time in the Arizona Fall League wasn't all that impressive. If Theo could pull this off more power to him, but the Marlins would be foolish.

If I'm Jeffery Loria, I'd only deal Hanley Ramirez for the world. Like, Lester, Bucholz Ellsbury and Lars Anderson. Hanley Ramirez might be the second best hitter in the NL behind Pujols, and with Cabrera in Detroit and Willingham gone, and given the fact that this is the Marlins and any talented player could be traded in an instant, Ramirez is pretty fucking important to that team. I don't think Epstein can be duped into giving away too much for Ramirez, but the only way the Marlins should make that deal is if they do.

Marlins shouldn't make any deal. First of all, they don't need to. He's under contract for a reasonable figure the next few years, not to mention that he is the face of the entire franchise. It would be too much to deal him now.

However, if Theo is willing to give you the world, maybe you listen. If Ellsbury/Buchholz is suddenly sweetened with something out of the Masterson/Bowden/Lars/Lowrie group, it might behoove him to do something. Hanley is nice; a World Series ring is nicer.

I'm not exactly counting down the days, but it looks like it could be cool. At the very least, they can finally stop with the looping programming.

I'll be interested in seeing the Ken Burns series tuesday nights..

oh and the Orioles are close to signing Richie Sexson, which at least will make Gary Thorne learn his name is Sexson and not Sexton. Also making it look like the Orioles could beat the Wizards in a game of basketball with a signing of another 6 foot 8 guy..or not.

The Cubs signed Aaron Miles today. From what I can gather, they are now going to trade DeRosa to the Indians for a couple of pitching prospects. Those prospects would then be used to get them back in on a possible Jake Peavy trade.

I've also heard that Milton Bradley is signed. Can't find a credible source to corroborate that though.

DeRosa to Cleveland for three prospects, signed Aaron Miles, working on Marquis to the Rockies for Vizcaino. This is all from WGN, which is as close to the Cubs as you're gonna get. If those Cleveland prospects don't yield Jake Peavy, this makes the Cubs worse. Mark DeRosa is a better player than Aaron Miles. I don't trust Miles to start at second for 100+ games on a team that's not the magical Cardinals, and he doesn't have DeRosa's versatility or popularity. I'm not shitting you: Mark DeRosa might have been the most popular Chicago Cub. Wood's gone, Derrek Lee talks shit about the people that buy tickets to see him play, nobody knows what Ramirez thinks of anything, and everyone knows Soriano is a bitch. It's all moot if Peavy comes to town, because that means the rotation is Zambrano/Peavy/Dempster/Harden/Lilly, which should win the Central. If Sean Marshall or Jeff Samardzija is the #5 starter and Aaron Miles is your second baseman, the Cardinals win the division.

EDIT: Wait, no! I already said I suspect Peavy is injured and Marshall would start anyway! Dammit! Curdnuls STILL win.

I hope the Cubs didn't fall in love with Miles' empty .300 average. Even the Cardinals only started him 81 times. One thing Czech is mistaken about though, Miles is more versatile than DeRosa. Miles played all over the infield, played all three outfield positions, and even pitched. I think it's likely the Cubs give Ronny Cedeno and Aaron Miles a fight for the job, and the loser becomes the utility infielder.

Angels signed Brian Fuentes for 2 years, $17.5 million. It's amazing. No one (besides the Yankees) seems willing to spend money at all. Compared to other deals, AJ Burnett is going to seem like an amazing overuse of money.

Lou doesn't like Ronny Cedeno. I don't think he makes it to spring training. Maybe Hendry will make the Padres take him. I know they really sold high on Mark DeRosa, but without prospects--->Peavy, they didn't get enough to justify it. I'm very skeptical of how this team is coming together. I see the Cardinals beating the Cubs 92-86.

The Angels signed Brian Fuentes, who from what I have seen was pretty much the only major free agent the Cardinals were actually trying to sign. Looks like another season of "Hey, who the fuck is going to be our closer now?".

Edit: dang it al

It's gonna be that one guy. The rookie. The...uh, guy with the hat? I dunno it's SOMEONE from the system I just don't remember his name but he looked promising at the end of the year.

I wonder how much cash the Rockies will make the Cubs give them with Jason Marquis to make that deal. Marquis in Denver, now that's a ticket.

The Braves were willing spend about 80 mill on Burnett, so theres one team. They just haven't found another pitcher they like.
