The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

Recommended Posts

So now an ex-girlfriend of Roberto Alomar's has claimed he has full blown AIDS.

Wow.

I think this deserves it's own thread. His gf is very beautiful. It's a shame if the story is true for the both of them.

Quick update. She is HIV negative and didn't get it from him. She claimed that he admitted to being raped by 2 men when he was 17. The rumor is that he is living in Puerto Rico with a former tv personality who quit the business to become a housewife.

Angels and Bobby Abreu come to a 1 year 5 million agreement.

Can't say that I can fault the Yankees for declining to offer arbitration now. The market for declining sluggers with no defensive talent is toast. Sorry to break it to you (you meaning: Manny, Griffey, Dunn, and Anderson).

Well...Manny WAS offered a ton of money on his one year offer. He just turned it down because... actually I have no idea.

He just alot of Leverage with the Angels signing Abreu to a 5 million dollar deal. 20 HR's, 100 Rbi's, 100 runs, 100 walks, .290 batting average. How much is Adam Dunn going to get now? 8 million at most. Raul Ibanez looks like the winner out of all them getting a 3 year 30 million dollar deal with the Champs. What teams are in the Manny Market? The Dodgers and????? It would make more sense to me that the Dodgers get Dunn and Orlando Hudson with the Manny money.

I don't disagree with that. I'd just add that Manny lost all his leverage before today. An guy who turns down all that money when he knows no one else is calling gave away all the leverage he was gonna have. The Dodgers offered him a chance to save face. And he spit in theres.

I think he and Boras are playing the Giants and Dodgers against each other. I read that the Giants were interested in Joe Crede but that might have changed now that he wants like 8 million this year. The Giants could certainly use Manny though.

Elijah Dukes, Lastings Milledge, Austin Kearns, Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham, Willie Harris, Nick Johnson, Dmitri Young

I understand having depth, but where in the world do they play all of these guys?

Here I thought the Mets had a glut of outfielders.

All those guys could theoretically earn starting positions on at least a couple of teams. Very strange.

Da Meat Hook is a non-roster invite so he might not even make the team. Guessing Kearns and Harris go to the bench and who knows what you can really expect out of Nick Johnson. I suppose they put Dunn at first or maybe Willingham could move there. A lot of GMs will be calling Bowden for trade possibilities.

Screwed up thinking Dmitri was on the 40-man, but I also forgot to add Wily Mo. So now the Nats have Dunn, Pena and Kearns? Look at Jim Bowden getting the band back together.

I'd start Dunn, Milledge and Dukes in the outfield with Kearns and Harris backing up. Willingham moves to first. Trade Nick Johnson to the A's and DFA Pena.

The Ibanez deal was the worst of the offseason. He's a good player, but Amaro totally misread the market for that type of player.

I would like to see the Red Sox re-open extension talks with Jason Bay now. His value has dropped significantly given what other comparable players are getting. Then again, he might just wait it out and hope that Holliday resets the market next year.

Nice signing, and somewhat surprising, for the Nationals to get Dunn. I knew they were pursuing him, I just figured he would end up elsewhere. This move is going to give them some credibility, and I'd look for them to flip some of their excess players in a trade sooner than later.

Fucking hell. Now the Ibanez deal REALLY ticks me off.

If it makes you feel any better I think it is 5 million plus incentives. Did Ibanez get 10 or 11 a year for 3 years? Dunn signed for 2 years 20 million.

Dunn deal now means we have to sign Manny. If not, forget about doing anything this year. And forget about getting the fans out to the ballpark.

Blue Jays acquired Matt Bush for a player to be named later.

YAY!!!

I have less hope for the team this year than I have since Ricciardi was hired. Part of it is the three-headed monster on top of the division, but a lot of it is that the front office has done NOTHING.

I hope you guys like Kevin Millar! Why the Jays keep on signing the Os outcasts is beyond me, but its kind of funny. The Os/Jays have some sort of cast off program going.

Parish/Zaun to the Os

Millar/Burres to the Jays

and I know it goes further back..

Mariners are in talks with Griffey to bring him back.

I'm not a fan of the Mariners, but this HAS to happen.

Seconded although if this happens, Seattle would be smart to platoon him at DH and start him against RHP.

2006-2008 vs. RHP: 945 AB - 268 H - 53 HR (BA: .284 with 5.6 HR%)

2006-2008 vs. LHP: 501 AB - 108 H - 22 HR (BA: .216 with 4.4 HR%)
