Guest Youth N Asia Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 Ok...the guy is overrated, but he's turned out some kick ass movies.
Guest dreamer420 Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 i had to vote for dr. strangelove. it is a classic film that provides a lot of laughs.
Guest muzanisa Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 Didn't he direct Sparticus? If he did I'm going for that. Strangelove was good as was full meatl jacket. I don't think he made a really bad movie although Lolita was not a patch on the book (but that's not really surprising). Of the above list I'd go for Clockwork Orange (again not a patch on the book and with the American ending) because of the MacDowell performance and because we used to watch a bootlegged copy before going to watch football.
Guest Anorak Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 How could you leave off Paths of Glory? One of the best war films ever made. That gets my unofficial vote anyway.
Guest Anubis Puppet Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 I voted for Clockwork. The atmosphere in that movie is absolutely intoxicating. The synthesizer soundtrack was groundbreaking for its time. Malcolm McDowell does a great job playing a fourteen-year-old. I love Patrick Magee's performance as the old man, as well. The expression on his face when he hears "Singin' In the Rain" is priceless. Plus: "I am pleased you appreciate good wine! Have another glass...." Bone-chilling shit. The book is better yet.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 The whole 2001-2010-2061-3001 series is pure gold also. Reading the book makes 2001 make a lot more sense. I really wish Kubrick had directed 2010 also.
Guest El Satanico Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 Didn't he direct Sparticus? No he didn't. He left the movie before it was completed so he isn't listed as the director. But i do believe he still gets a Producer credit or something.
Guest razazteca Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 I picked Clockwork Orange, since it the only one I have seen more than once. Gotta love the ultra violence, the fight scene with Billy's Boys Gang, the re-education of Alex, the biblical day dreams. Righty Right governor
Guest Shaved Bear Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 Clockwork Orange creeped the hell outta me
Guest redbaron51 Posted June 24, 2002 Report Posted June 24, 2002 Clockwork Orange. Its so fricken creepy I've never seen the whole thing
Guest J*ingus Posted June 25, 2002 Report Posted June 25, 2002 Ah, Clockwork Orange! We meet again, my old enemy. Truly, I think this is quite possibly the single most overrated film in movie history. I absolutely hated it, loathed every second, found not one redeeming part. In other words, it ain't getting my vote. Never liked Shining or Full Metal Jacket either. But Kubrick did produce some movies which I liked a whole lot. I'd probably rank Eyes Wide Shut, Dr. Strangelove, and 2001 as best, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted June 25, 2002 Report Posted June 25, 2002 I'm too torn between Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove to choose.
Guest endgame722 Posted June 25, 2002 Report Posted June 25, 2002 Didn't he direct Sparticus? No he didn't. He left the movie before it was completed so he isn't listed as the director. But i do believe he still gets a Producer credit or something. It was Anthony Mann who left the movie and was replaced by Kubrick. Though Kubrick is credited as director for the film, it doesn't have the same feel as his other movies. As for Kubrick's best film, I'll go with 2001 followed by Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove
Guest Incandenza Posted June 25, 2002 Report Posted June 25, 2002 Though Kubrick is credited as director for the film, it doesn't have the same feel as his other movies. So much so that he disowned it, though his name still appears in the credits as the director. In addition to leaving off Paths of Glory, this poll leaves off The Killing--awesome heist movie that helped pave the way for films like Reservoir Dogs--and Killer's Kiss, Kubrick's "first" feature length film.

Guest Ravenbomb Posted June 26, 2002 Report Posted June 26, 2002 Hmm...2001 or Clockwork Orange...choices... I'll go with Clockwork Orange. It's a much easier viewing IMO, since it doesn't take that much figuring out.
Guest JaKyL25 Posted June 27, 2002 Report Posted June 27, 2002 Bah! Easy viewing is for wimps! 1.) 2001 2.) A Clockwork Orange 3.) Dr. Strangelove 4.) The Shining 5.) Barry Lyndon 6.) Eyes Wide Shut 7.) Lolita 8.) Full Metal Jacket
Guest Vern Gagne Posted June 27, 2002 Report Posted June 27, 2002 The Killing Kubrick's first and best film. It obviously isn't well known, but check it out some time. Red Lightning
Guest J*ingus Posted June 27, 2002 Report Posted June 27, 2002 Has anyone else seen Killer's Kiss? It was a pretty ordinary little B-movie with some nice photography, but I actually liked it a lot more than some of his later work.
Guest dreamer420 Posted June 27, 2002 Report Posted June 27, 2002 I'm too torn between Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove to choose. cool, another dr. strangelove fan. i haven't seen to much mention of it in this thread.
Guest C.H.U.D. Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 I've never heard of a Kubrick film called "The Shinning". I've seen The Shining though. Full Metal Jacket is my favourite.
Guest El Satanico Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 The Shinning is a movie about a English "shin kicking" team who are huge underdogs. The team has zero confidence and seemingly has no shot at winning "The Shinning" which is a tournament that crowns the Champion Shin Kicking team. Well then enter a brash young American(Josh Hartnett) who takes over as coach and who teaches the team how to truly believe in themselves. In their last game of the regular season their star player(Hugh Grant) breaks his foot as he scores the game winning point which amazingly gets them into The Shinning. With only one week before the tournament they have no star player and they are one player sort of an eligible roster. While they are at a local pub drowning their sorrows in many pints a homeless Japanese man(Jackie Chan) over hears their problem. He approaches the coach and says he is the answer to their problem. The coach(Josh Hartnett) stares at the man and asks if he has any shin kicking experience. The Japanese man(Jackie Chan) shakes his head no but before the coach can respond he quickly kicks the leg of a nearby table snapping it in two then says "but I can kick good". Well the new players only gets 2 days of training before "the shinning" begins. Amazingly The team makes it all the way to the Championship. They face the undefeated team from Ireland in the Championship. Their new star player(Jackie Chan) is injured early in the game so the coach(Josh Hartnett) has to return to playing the game that he vowed to never play again after the incident 2 years ago. The match is tied with one last match to determine the winner. Amazingly the new star player(Jackie Chan) limps back out to the sideline and replaces the coach. Ireland's star player(Dolph Lungren) smiles at him and says "I crush you". After an extremely long 40 minute match the Japanese man(Jackie Chan) lands the fatal kick which drops the Irish star(Dolph Lungren). The English win "The Shinning", become champions and get coverage in every major news shows, magazines and newspapers. The End
Guest J*ingus Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 Oh my god. Satanico must be a major-league fudgepacker, cuz look at the size of what he just pulled out of his ass! Great work, man.
Guest massivHEDtrauma Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 That was by far the funniest damn thing I've heard or read or what have you all day. For the record, it's A Clockwork Orange, not just Clockwork Orange.
Guest El Satanico Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 well i try :bows: you love me...you really REALLY love me Just incase you're wondering. Shin kicking is a real sport in Ireland i believe.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 Didn't Bart have the Shinning in that Halloween episode?
Guest Ripper Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 Yeh, it was. Wille was talking about THE SHINNING. Bart: Don't you mean the Shini Willie: Shhhh; we don't want to get sued.
Guest Ripper Posted June 28, 2002 Report Posted June 28, 2002 Am I the only one afraid that someone could pitch the idea of "The Shinning" just like above and in todays hollywood, it would actually get made.
