Swf "best Of" Series - Part 1

Recommended Posts

Guest HVilleThugg

Here it is people, the beginning of the ego stroking. Today's topic...

FAVORITE MATCH

Please list your favorite matches in both the WF and the JL. Please, I know a lot of people only mark out for themselves, and if you honestly think the best match was yours then vote for it...but please don't just vote for your matches because it's yours and you liked it.

Also, let me put this disclaimer on this...

This is not, in any way shape or form, an indication or a replacement for the end of the year awards happening in September. These are people talking about their favorite match...coughpopularitycontestcough! Also, the thoughts here do not represent, nor are they endorsed by the CC as a whole or it's members (unless, of course, they post here).

Ok....go for it!

The favorite five matches I've read from the WF, in no particular order. I'm sure this will change next time I think of them.

1) Neilsen of the Jungle d. The Fallen (Angelous and Molock) in a handicap match, sometime in January of 2001. This match, along with a US Title match where Mercury took the title from Divefire, is why I joined the SWF, because it was so god-damn cool. Neilsen won by getting his ass handed to him the whole match, then mounting an amazing comeback and scoring a double McTwist to win. I love this match.

2) Edwin MacPhisto d. Perfect Bo, Hville Thugg in an elimination match, from the Crossfire 2002 PPV. Yep, this is the one appearance I'll give myself on here. This is the best match I've ever written, and probably the most fun, because it's the culmination of what I think is one of the most complex and best angles to ever appear in the WF. I still get chills when I read the whole aftermatch thing with the beatdown and X returning, and I'm going to have to work real hard to ever top it. I'm ridiculously proud of this, that I came from reading matches and going "Wow. I'd like to do this." all the way to this.

3) King of Hearts vs. Thoth...I can't remember if this was their qualifying match from Genesis, or if it took place in August during their brief US title feud. I think it was in August. KoH was face and leading the Carnival, and Thoth had just recently debuted and won the US belt. In any case, I believe it was King's match, and it was frickin' amazing, one of the most brutal matches I've ever read, and contained one of my absolute all-time mark-out moments: Thoth breaking KoH's jaw with a thrust kick. God, that kicked so, so much ass. These two were set up for an amazing feud, but it never really happened. Maybe someday, when King returns to active competition, they'll have it.

4) The first Clusterfuck, won by Pimp Daddy Sarp. 20 wrestlers, the debut of Axis, Sacred, and Cyclone Comet. Let's see if I can remember the entire roster: Axis, Sacred, Comet, Chris Storm, Chris Wilson, Divefire, Dan Vigilante, Bobby Riley, Red Hurricane, Molock, Angelous, Madrac, Stubby P. McWeed, Pimp Daddy Sarp, Mercury, Grimedogg, Ben Hardy, Curry Man...uh...that's 18. I'm real close. In comparison, Mark Stevens' match is probably the better match altogether, but this one is absolutely totally legendary. PDS managed to write 20 guys, put most of them over, and have an amazing finish where he turned heel, battered Mercury, and suddenly put a helluva lot more heat on his upcoming feud with Rane. He also made Comet a full-fledged WF star, having him last to the final three men...it was great. Love, love, love this match

5) Tag Titles/Stables Titles Two-Fall Match: Phoenix Uprising (Rane, Axis, Comet) vs. Prime Evil (Fallout, Silencer, El Luchador Magnifico) vs. Midnight Carnival (KoH, Chris Raynor, Spark). Wow. This is the match that put the Carnival on the map. It was a 9-man tag, 3 teams of 3, with the first fall for Rane and Comet's tag belts, which they retained, and the second fall for Prime Evil's stables titles, which the Carnies won...and never lost, until the belts were retired. WOO! I remember King and Raynor staying up till 3 in the morning something like 4 nights in a row working on the match, which turned out to be an absolute epic that put everyone over, and had Chris Raynor go through the windshield of the Love Rollercoaster thanks to Fallout. This is the first match where the Carnival really looked like a totally unified and awesome stable.

So, those are my five personal faves. Good choices all, I think, and really, I think that last one might be the best tag match, ever. Anyone have any competitors for it?

You forgot NTD and MrG in that match.

MrG with the Ontario Tigertamer on Comet for like 5 minutes... and NTD, the absolute funniest elimination of all time!

I have to support Divefire defending the title against Stubby and Rane, which was practically unheard of in those days.

Also Edwin's first ICTV title match... another badass match.

HVT winning the SWF title the first time. This match folks, I swear to you, converted HVT from a Spot Machine, to one of the most badass wrestling writers in this fed!

The Three Suicide King PPV matches. Edwin, Raynor, HVT. They were all top notch. The feuds f'n rocked! I still remember Edwin's "All Joker's" promos, and the Raynor one, where he was put over as the man that King could not predict.

Stubby's title win, and defense in the six man battle royal. Awesome shit.

Comet defeating Neilsen in the Hell in a Cell.

Riley defeating Stubby. I think this match shocked everyone. Riley was one badass writer, too bad he's not around now.

Although it was very gimmicky due to Suicide King involvement... it was only right in this case. Edwin/Stevens... retirement match.

HVT/Fallout... HVT tapped out dudes! Tapped da fuck out!

Edwin's title win... wow... now this was a read!

WF:

Neilsen vs Comet HIAC.

Edwin vs Bo vs Thugg

Comet vs Neilsen Censorship/Gimmick... EVEN I felt ripped off out of the match when it was all a joke and Cyclone tried a heel turn, *tsk tsk*.

Jayson G vs Fallout Snake eyes? I can't recall anything but I marked for Edwin showing up.

Neilsen beats the Fallen, I remember that one clearly.

Divefire vs Stubby vs Rane.... the monster.

ML/JL

Spider vs Edwin.

Final show match.

Silent vs Thoth.

Miami Mayhem I.

Renegade vs Stryke vs Annie

IL vs Ash Show before Retribution

Correction for Edwin: I was put through the Hearse. And you had the falls mixed up. But no matter.

I always thought, after the fact like I do all my thinking, we could have made the ending less random. I think, total-matchwise, the Snake Eyes Stable Match was better than Crossfire, though Crossfire was definitely more fun to write.

WF

-- Comet vs Neilsen, Censorship vs Gimmick

-- Hide and Go Seek Match

-- Stubby's Title-Winning Match

-- Divefire's Title-Winning Match

JL/ML

-- The original Miami Mayhem

-- The ML Danceoff, if that counts. It WAS supposed to be a match.

-- Hell in a Pokeball!

Wow, three people picked my first Miami Mayhem match? Cool. I bet none of you even remember who my opponent was in that match. (Though I know people are still talking to this day about my breathtaking five-story fall from a condo balcony into a swimming pool.)

Anyway, best WF matches that I can recall reading...

Cyclone Comet vs. Neilsen of the Jungle, gimmick-censoring match.

Cyclone Comet vs. Pepsi MAX machine

Divefire's World title win

Edwin's World title win

Ash Ketchum vs. Chris Raynor, Genesis II tournament

And my personal best: LDP vs. Sarah, cage match, Hardcore title.

And JL matches...

argh, my mind is drawing a blank right now. But my personal best in the JL was beating Low Brass at Code Red in the First Blood match for my third European title.

Aww, don't feel so down, Stubby. We were all just living in fear, that's it...

I did really like the title win against Riley in the cage, plus that handicap match against Thugg and Suicide's final character, James Vincetti. Spiffariffic stuff, and I think Thugg remains one of very few to survive the Paranoid Freak-Out.

Ok....finally...I'm going to post my favorite matches of all time!

First...the JL!

1. Munich vs. D-Devil - Bar Room Brawl

- I think it was Munich...I know it was D-Devil! This match was absolutely hilarious! Munich played the theme from Cheers for crying outloud. I don't remember all the details about this match, but I just remember rolling on the floor laughing.

2. LDP's Miami Mahem #1

- I honestly don't remember his opponent in this one, but I'm sure it was someone from EoD...I could be wrong though. You can never replace a ground breaking classic like this match, no matter how many times you redo it. I mirror this to the first WWE TLC match. That match was awsome, and no other TLC match will ever be able to compare.

3. HVT vs. Zio - World Title Match

- Yeah, I know Crusen...you hated this match...but, well...screw you, it's one of my favorites. This was my longest match at the time, clocking in at at close to 8,000 words (which by today's standards isn't that high, but still...). I loved writing this match, and every now and then, I go back and read it again, and I still enjoy it.

4. Vanguard's Mall Brawl - On the most recent JL PPV

- Too bad he's gone, but this match rocked! It was funny as hell, and it included tons of references to the French film "The Red Balloon"...or at least I think that's what it's called. This is the perfect way to write a match of this kind.

Now....the WF

1. HVT vs. El Luchadore Magnifico

- I'm sorry, but I must do what I said not to do, and that's shill for myself. This is absolutely, positively, my favorite match (that I wrote) of all time. I remember when I finished it, I wasn't that impressed, but then after it won, I read it and was like, wow...did I write that. I even got a compliment from RL friend Xstasy, and he rarely compliments me in person on my matches. He usually just says, "yeah...it was tight", but told me I actually had him going when it looked like HVT and ELM had settled their differences. Anyway, JD said it best...I think this match transformed me from a big ass crazy spot machine into an alround match writer. Or maybe I just got lucky...

2. Xstasy vs. Edwin MacPhisto vs. Axis - The "Whipback Kick" Match

- Wilson already mentioned this one, so I won't go into depth. But this match fuckin' rocked!!!

3. Ash Ketchum vs. Chris Raynor - Upset of the Year!!!

- I do believe this is Ash's best match ever...or, at least that I've read. I definitely started marking out for him after this. I mean, this was one hell of an upset at the time!

4. Suicide King vs. HVT - World Title Match

- Again, I shill for a match I was in, but King did an absolute beautiful job culminating the angle we were running. I've never been happier that my match didn't win.

5. Edwin MacPhisto vs HVT vs Bo - World Title Match

- Same reason as the one above. He just did a beautiful job climaxing the angle we worked so hard on.

Maybe I'll think of more later...unfortunately, I'm one of those guilty people that didn't really read WF matches until I got to the WF, and furthermore, I didn't start reading entire shows until I started to really get into things in the WF.
