Barack Obama's Inauguration

Recommended Posts

I had no idea the President Elect had any official duties, but it seems like he's getting all sorts of briefings n stuff...

What, did you think they just put a handbook on his desk in the Oval Office titled So You Just Got Sworn In As President....?

I found this pretty interesting

outcome1.png

outcome2.png

This last one is the stunner. After about 110K, voters in this election became less likely to vote for the ostensibly anti-”spread the wealth” candidate.

Obama also had a huge pick-up in 18-29 year-old voters. What explains all this? Here’s my conjecture, in one word: secularization.

Rich people who don’t go to church are especially socially liberal. The richer they get, the less they prioritize economic issues over social issues, as Inglehart’s “post-materialism” theory predicts. And, if I recall from recent surveys, there has been a big decline in religiosity among the young, which tends to go along with an increasingly socially liberal cast of mind. The overall effect is that the Republican Party has become too socially conservative for increasingly secular wealthy people and increasingly secular twenty-somethings. The GOP is now pretty clearly the party of the religious, white, middle-aged and elderly middle class–not a group with a shining political future. The increasing popularity of the Democrats among the rich is going to move the economic policy preference of the median Democrat “right” and the economic policy preference of the median Republican “left”. In the short term, this might make for a decrease in polarization on economic policy, which may produce bipartisan support for policies that will horrify libertarians. In the long term, the Democrats will continue to become ever more “socially liberal and fiscally conservative,” despite the attempt of the ideological left-leaning media and academic opinion elites (who are full of New New Deal ideas) to prevent this.

Food 4 thought.

I just had the pleasure of shaking Senator-elect Jeff Merkley's hand before going into class earlier this morning- dude was accepting the Senate seat right outside my classroom! In front of a throng of reporters and news cameras.

That was a hell of a hard-fought victory though, and unseating Gordon Smith was no easy task- I was looking forward much more to shaking Novick's hook, but if Obama takes our Earl from the House to Secretary of Transportation, there's a strong possibility that Novick could be in Congress through that way, so having both the guys in our Democratic Primary in Congress plus Earl in the Cabinet would be some hella strong Oregon representation in the federal government. I'd love it.

Merkley's victory ensures that Oregon is practically 100% blue now, from governor to senators to representatives and state government. Awesome.

I love the conservatives who talk about moving to Canada.

Yeah, you're scared of a liberal president so move to the country that is even more liberal than that president.

Just like a lot of liberals claimed they were moving to The Great White North after W. got re-elected 4 years ago. Much like then, it's just anger talk.

I'm disappointed Obama won, but with American Idol as the #1 show in the country, its not a shock that so many people would fall for his empty promises of change without looking into his record as senator, or the fact that David Axelrod came up with Obama's whole gimmick (and thats just what it is).

What the fuck ever.

Before people try to judge Obama entirely by his voting record, they need to keep in mind that he was in the minority most of the time he has been in the Senate, and still got bipartisan bills passed with Lugar and Coburn.

Are you sure you are really looking at his actual voting record, and not just the percentage of times he voted with his party or against the Bush Administration?

If you want to bitch about Obama's "liberal" voting record, please cite some examples of votes you disagreed with and explain why you disagreed.

The local Repub. talk show host was crying today saying the voters 18-25 are to blame for McCain's loss to this socialist Pretty Boy. Then he blamed American Idol for teaching the youth the wrong way to judge people.

I emailed him and thanked him for the laugh.

How many more civil liberties can really be taken away? Bush's

"Patriot Act" and other security measures raped us of alot of privacy

and free will.

Complaining or worrying that our gun rights will be restricted or

removed or whatever the fear tactic is, seems to me to be about as

equal a issue as anyone who would've voted McCain strictly for the

Pro-Life issue. I don't feel the guns or abortion issues will change

drastically regardless who we vote into office. I very well may be

wrong as I am 26 and part of the lost generation that you spoke of

today.

As far as war budget cuts, I can't fathom exactly how Obama intends to

reach finality in the Iraq conflict, and fund expanded efforts in

Pakistan and Afghanistan. So you have me with that point.

Well,

After his security briefing today, let's see what Obama thinks of the

security measures taken. You feel raped. Tell me specifically how these

measures affected you.

I can't say for certain whether or not I was earmarked as a potential

homeland terrorist or not. I assume that those in control of wire

tapping and surveillance of persons of interest would be discreet

enough that I wouldn't know. It was the abusing of these security

measures that bothered me greatly.

If Obama is leaning Socialist, What was Bush aiming toward? Totalitarianism?

I can't wait to see the 2012 campaign when Republicans REALLY can't use the "he has no experience argument." Unless you nominate Zombie Teddy Roosevelt, you're probably going to have to find a new schtick.

There are over 60 days until Inauguration Day. Hence the "we could be posting in here for a while" crack.

We won't need the experience shtick with the economy planted firmly in a ditch. But that's for another time, when the economy actually heads into said ditch.

Great quote from Newsweek:

The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I fucking changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."

Well, it took 20 years before the public trusted the G.O.P. again after the Great Depression started, so we shall see.

Just saying, my friends.

And you think that people are going to blame the policies that haven't been enacted yet...when it's tanking already?

First, I'll correct you, and say that our economy is not tanking. It is sinking, like a tire into mud. Slowly. And when you continue to push the gas, you sink further down. Bail-outs are like pushing the gas and spinning the tires. They slowly deepen the hole, and it is much harder for anything to pull the tire out.

It's really quite simple. When those policies are supposed to pull us out of the hole and do not, what happens? Doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

When promises are made, and the economy does not correct, who gets the blame? Let's ignore that it is unfeasible to expect the economy to correct in four years, as the public generally does not care about what is feasible and what is not feasible.

We want lower gas. We do not see lower gas. We get mad at the people in power, even if they cannot control the cost of gas. Gas goes down, people forget about alternative fuels. Bear in mind I'm talking about the public here, and not myself. When they economy corrects, people will forget about it, and spend like crazy. Or you can say that they'll ignore what got us into this trouble in the first place, and afterwhile go back to that behavior. That's the way it works.

They care about what they see, and when they see something, they vote based on those controlling government.

Who gets the blame?

It took 20 years before the public trusted the G.O.P. again after the Great Depression started.

Just saying.

It's possible that could happen again. Never know. The best thing for Democrats would've been no bailout. Then they would've been absolved of all blame, and certainly would keep power for a long time.

They would've had two strong gripes, had all Republicans voted against the bailout.

1. You did not vote for the bailout, and the economy went to shit.

2. You put partisanship before the country, we did not, now fuck you.

However, this is two-fold. Let's say Democrats pushed through the bailout, and the Republicans did not vote for it.

1. You voted for something with your majority, and the economy still went to shit. You failed. And you did not need our support.

2. Taxpayer dollars were wasted. Now give your majority back.

We'll see. Anyway, Obama gets a fair shake from me. A very fair shake. And I will look at it differently than the public, who will simply not understand why things are the way they are, and who to blame for that. So they point at that guy, the one in the Oval Office. Everything's his fault to them.

And if the economy does not tank, we should pack up and wait 8 years.

I put it in pretty simple terms. I don't know how anyone could not get that.

The next republican ticket will have to come up with an economic plan that isn't the same as Bush's in order for anyone to listen to them outside of their own supporters. Bush may be out of office soon, but his legacy to this country is going to be on people's minds 4 years from now still. If the GOP runs out with the "big cuts for the wealthy" plan again, it won't matter what Obama's policies do as much...because everyone knows those don't work.

I agree on the level that people that don't see instant results will want to turn on Obama...but not to go back to the thing that they hate more.

People are very willing to forget about what they dislike if the disliked is clearly a different entity than what they were before.

One way of doing that is to quit campaigning on ditching earmark spending while congressmen are still asking for them. STOP TAKING EARMARKS. We need to do what we say, not say what we need to do.
