THANK YOU! I had forgotten about this guy, but damn. They recently did a couple new commercials with the guy trying to rap in one, and trying to do metal in another.

F-to the-R-to the-E-to the-E-to the-C-to the-R-to the-E-D-I-T......UGH!

 

These have to be the worst commercials since the Geico Caveman thing started. The first Caveman commercial was funny in a random sense, with the guy saying "It's so easy a Caveman can do it", then you hear, "NO, NO, NOT COOL!" and the guy holding the boom mic was a Caveman. OK, that was pretty good. However, the Geico commercials since then are just horrible.

If you "hate" FreeCreditReport, you're stupid. Maybe you can find them annoying after a while like all commercials eventually become, kind of a shake-your-fist "aww I can't get it out of my head damn you!" that we reserve for Jordan Sparks songs and the like, but they've brought jingles back to the forefront of television advertising, so you have to hand it to them for that. You purport to hate that, yet you hate the minimalist Geico stuff too. So which is it? What do you want from your commercials? Do you want songs, do you want near-silence and non-sequiturs, do you want ol' Hats For Bats standing in front of an expressway lecturing you? How do you wish to be persuaded? The F-to-the-R one you mentioned is the best one. It's catchy and sounds cool and obviously gets everyone to remember a service which in all likelihood is of dubious efficacy and legitimacy. That's a coup. If you're going to hate a commercial, hate the ones that just utterly waste your time. All things Billy Mays would be a good example. He's so overexposed and obnoxious that he's immediately tuned out. Maybe he needs FreeCreditReport's songwriters.

 

Now that I'm ranting, the commercial that annoys the shit out of me more than any right now is the radio ad for the Independence Bowl in which Northern Illinois plays...I forget, someone, in Shreveport. It's a 60, and the bed is the marching band playing the fight song, so already you have a guy talking over an entire marching band for an entire minute, all over low-fidelity AM radio. The copy is horribly meandering and seems to just be one closing line after another, so you keep feeling like it's going to wrap up and then it just keeps going. It's pretty awful stuff, trust me. No clear call to action, it's aural sandpaper, it's just bad.

My favorite commercial of the past couple years is probably the Citibank "BIGBOY" commercial.

 

 

I even got a laugh out of the Gamestop commercial involving the two parents finding porn under their son's bed since he hadn't given them any hints about what he wanted for Christmas.
