Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted February 17, 2002 I was really looking forward to purchasing State of Emergency. I had heard all kinds of great things about it online and from the guys working at the video game stores I frequent prior to its release. Now, I haven't seen the review from IGN, nor have I even heard their score(damned Insider program), but GameSpot gave it an 8.5. Then I went and looked at some reviews from the "common folk" who had purchased this game expecting the brilliance that it was built up as, and many of them seem rather disappointed. Can anyone give me a good idea of the positives and negatives of this game so that I can decide whether or not to buy it?
Guest Darry Report post Posted February 18, 2002 I purchased State of Emergency, and from what I've played so far, I can offer up the following. For people that are looking for Grand Theft Riot, this ain't it. There's nothing of Grand Theft Auto 3's grand, sweeping scale with this game. The levels are small and uninspired and the gameplay is basic and boring. There's zero mission variety, as all missions are variations on fetch quests or "protect this guy from a swarm of baddies". The number of weapons is disappointingly small, and there are really no cool extra features. The game is okay for a rental, if you're looking to relax with a game that doesn't take much out of you. A teacher of mine once said that doing basic things well isn't hard to do, and this is pretty much the epitome of that. If I had to sum this one up, I'd say it's mind-numbing. That covers it across the board.
Guest cdstunner66 Report post Posted February 18, 2002 Actually I kind of like the game. I agree that the storyline mode is pretty repetitive, but I love the chaos mode.
Guest Scott Hall Drank My Beer Report post Posted February 19, 2002 This game is repetitive because it is a BEAT-EM-UP. All games in that genre have been that way; Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, Final Fight. This game is not, and was never intended to be Grand Theft Auto 4. Just because it was published by Rockstar does not mean that it has to be compared to GTA3. Two completely different companies made GTA3 and SoE. DMA made GTA3 whereas Vis made SoE. People set their expectations so high on this game just because of the Rockstar label on it that none of them could be met. Well I enjoy the game, in all its mindless glory. Revolution mode is so-so, but the Chaos Mode is worth the price of admission alone. There is nowhere else in gaming today that you can get a gattling gun and kill 100s of civilians in a crowded shopping mall in one swoop. STOP COMPARING THIS GAME TO GTA3 PEOPLE. Guest Badd Company Report post Posted February 19, 2002 Just rented it today......have only played it for an hour or two, so can't say whether its a buy or not, but it's definitely worth a rental......a lot of fun, but don't expect much depth, and from the looks of things there are only four levels (though they are decent in size). Definitely worth a rental, and quite possibly a buy if it's your kind of thing. First game I've played where you can decapitate a guy and beat others to death with his head. It's kind of like a fun, mindlessly over the top violent version of Crazy Taxi.
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted February 19, 2002 Well, I bought the game yesterday against the advice of my friends. I really enjoy it. It is almost the same thing over and over, but it's still fun. All I was expecting was a beat em up like the ones from back in the day and that's what it is. Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted February 25, 2002 i like it, i already unlocked the hilarious spanky, so revolution is done for me, and its really fun to do the clone chaos things, because its mindless destruction and holds true to my basic video game forumla: mindless destruction=fun
