best Steven Spielberg movie?

I would've put Duel on there instead of AI or Last Crusade, but that's just me.

 

I voted for Schindler's List, btw, it's easily the best movie he's ever made.

It was a complete shock for me to realize that this was the same guy who directed E.T., Jaws, Raiders, et al.

 

He was showered with praise for this movie, and he deserved it.

Sorry, but I ate up every moment of Saving Private Ryan with myself(My last name is Spoon, so the joke makes sense). I loved it, even if it is diffcult for me to watch at times.

I voted for Jaws. There's no denying Schindler's List is a better film technically, but in terms of overall impact, there's nobody who hasn't seen Jaws, and it's purpose was to scare people, which it did extremely so. Everybody was afraid to go in the water.

Oh yeah, The Color Purple is just SUPER DUPER HAPPY FUN TIME. As are The Sugarland Express and Empire of the Sun. BEFORE Schindler's List came out, he had already garnered 3 Best Director Oscar nominations.

 

Everyone already knew he was one of the all time greats. Schindler's List put him at the level with the greatest of the greats and Saving Private Ryan raised the bar and put his career as one of the few that all others will be measured by. He and Hitchcock are the only two directors in history that have been able to draw large amounts of people on their names alone, and there is good reason for that.

 

To paraphrase James Cameron, "Nobody gives a fuck what the name of the director of movie is, unless it happens to be Steven Spielberg."

 

To quote my friend after we saw Minority Report, "Steven Spielberg is just going to have to give up his free time and make ALL movies from now on."

schindler's list, no contest. easily one of the 5 or 10 best films ever.

 

incidentally i think spielberg is pretty damn overrated. yes, he has directed more great movies than most people, but he's done very little to change or expand how a director can do what he does (unlike, say, welles or bunuel). and minority report was not that good.

I've never seen Schindler's List but due to it's reputation I would have to assume it was his best film to date. Of the Spielberg movies I've seen would say that Saving Private Ryan was probably the best though there are dozens of better war movies around.

Having never seen Schindler's List (which I really need to get around to doing one of these days) or Minority Report yet, I vote for:

 

Artificial Intelligence--A.I.

 

Not a popular choice at all, but I think it's a wonderful, thought provoking movie. You can see the real grating of styles between Kubrick and Spielberg though.

 

Saving Private Ryan is VERY VERY close. It's like choosing between two ****1/2 star matches where one could have been ***** easy with just a little something more, while the other is a complete package at ****1/2. In this instance, I choose the potential over the fulfilled.

In terms of best movie it's Schindler's List. But I could only watch that movie once. It's just two depressing for me to watch.

 

Saving Private Ryan has probably the most memorable openings ever. D-Day veterans have called it the most realistic portrayal of the D-Day.

 

Both movies honor and pay tribute two historic events in World history.

 

But they aren't my favorite Spielberg movies...

 

Raiders is my choice. Great Action, Great Performances.. Harrison Ford and Karen Allen.The movie never gets old no matter how many times I've seen it.

I have a hard time watching Saving Private Ryan, as the first time I saw it happened to be just a week or so after my father had been shot. (Don't worry, he's fine now.) The opening scene had me crying within five minutes, and the rest of the movie just steamrolled over me for the next 150 minutes.

I had to go with Jurassic Park. I could watch that movie on a constant loop for the rest of my life. AND I don't even like dinosaurs to begin with.
