Japanese wrestling: how much of its history has been on PPV?

Does anyone have any information on when Japanese wrestling PPV's started in that country? (I realise that some Japanese shows such as the WCW/NJPW Supershows were on PPV in the States from 1991-1993.)

 

Are they relatively recent in comparison to the US (i.e.: the build tended to be towards big attendances rather than big viewing figures?) How important are they in Japan? Is there a list anywhere of which shows were on PPV and which ones were not?
