Who works your local indies

Hey...for those who attend the indies I'm just wonder what kind of big or simi big names you get. Regulars, not one timers.

 

In Michigan Sabu is a regular for the IWF, Nova was here quite a bit before signing with WWE, Balls has been through a couple of time, Terry Taylor, Simon Diamon, Guido, CW, Terry Taylor, Disco, and Whipwreck were all or still are regulars for BCW in Winsor.

 

And back in the day Edge, Christian, Rhino, and Just Joe were a heel stable for ICW (now IWF) called "Canadian Thug Life"

Low-Ki, Red, SAT's, Xavier, Homocide, Quiet Storm...Don't remember anyone else right now thats a known regular.

A bunch of NWA:TNA guys worked here in Nashville if not started out here: James Storm, Chris Harris, David Young, Slash (Wolfie D), Del Rios (Spellbinder), AJ Styles, so forth & so on. Jerry Lawler, Brian Christopher, Terry Taylor, Doug Gilbert, Tracey Smothers, LeiLani Kai, Candi Devine, and Larry Zybyzco are all here pretty often. We also get different combinations of the old Midnight/Rock-&-Roll Expresses down here pretty often. Jim Cornette brings a lot of the OVW guys down often, including David Flair. And a couple of years ago we were a developmental deal for WCW, so all the Power Plant guys were here.

 

As for one-shots, we've had everyone from Dusty Rhodes to Disco Inferno to Sabu to Nova to Buff Bagwell to Jodie Fleish & Johnny Storm, and that's just over the past two months.

In NY, Dames mentioned a bunch of them. As for ex-ECW guys; Balls used to show up quite a bit as did Tommy Cairo. Snuka had been around for a while, the Sandman would occasionally show up.

The indy scene in central Indiana is quite sad. We get 2 shows a year in my hometown (Crawfordsville, answer to the obscure trivia question, "What town was Jim Hellwig born in?"), featuring a bunch of untrained morons who think they're stars because they "got wrasslin' boots". Unless you count IWA Mid-South, who runs Indianapolis every once and a while but is based in southern Indiana, the biggest names to come through in the past 12 months are Public Enemy. But there's a new group starting in July called FXW I think that's bringing in guys like Rob Williams, Chris Harris (hopefully; there's a rumor floating around that he's booked for the first TV taping), and whatever's left of Steel Dominion Wrestling.

 

I got a (sort of) funny story. A couple of years back, we did get Ricky Morton and Chris Hamrick in on a one-shot as "The New Rock 'N' Roll Express". It was two months before Hamrick signed with ECW, and no one knew who he was. They actually advertised Ricky and Robert, but Robert I guess doesn't have to work many indies anymore due to saving his money well. Anyway, there was an autograph signing the afternoon of the show at the local sports memorbilia shop with Ricky and Chris. Nearly no one showed up, and the six that did only wanted to talk to Ricky. Everyone ignored Hamrick because we didn't know he was supposed to be the other half of the team that night. I got to talk to Ricky for about 20 minutes (cool guy, but a little out there). When I had to leave, I saw Chris away from his merch table and trying to get a bargain on a 1:24 scale diecast replica of a Jeff Gordon car (I collect those, too). The show that night was suck-ass; only match that was good was the main event featuring Hamrick and Morton against some Gangsta wannabees (The Cold Brothers, I think). Hamrick was actually the one who "played Ricky Morton", and did a hell of a job of it. He even capped the match off with an insane suicide dive where he overleaped and almost landed head-first onto a chair. I also got a copy of WrestleWar '89 for $4 there, so it's all good.

I'm in Cincinnati so I've got the HWA in town which has always got it's fair share of WWF developmental talent.

Being from Southern New Jersey, I live in an area rich with indy wrestling. Some of the names I see regularly are Low-Ki, Ric Blade, Sat's, Ruckus, Trent Acid, Johnny Kashmere. I saw the Haas bros. in their indy days. CZW also had Tajiri and Tommy Dreamer for a little while before their WWE days. CZW used to have their monthly shows in Washington Township (Sewell), my home town.

In southeast Missouri,we had one promotion running..CICW...which has since split back into it's two original feds.Haven't been to the reformed Isaac's Championship Wrestling yet so I can't say anything about them.

 

Chaotic Championship Wrestling is running a show in Dexter Friday night and they have some good talent.They aren't getting a lot of promotion down here but the shows are worth seeing.The only "name" guy seems to be a guy named Rage,who apparently worked in WCW in some team.

 

I have not been up to St.Louis yet for Gateway Championship Wrestling.From what I've read,they bring in someone like Pondo now and again and I believe New Jack and Sandman were up there a month or two ago.

Canadien Thug Life..Sex and Violence...Handsome Johnny Bradford...kicking the hell out of Malcom Monroe...that was an angle!Insane Championship Wrestling kicked ass back then.Ian vs Pondo every other month it seemed but it was good.The gym on Grand River...the car on fire in the parking lot from the flaming branding iron by Tex Monroe....Rick Matrix ($40 Rick $40),New Jack vs Bruiser Bedlam....the Headbangers vs Sexton and Legend....the good times.

 

They had Tommy Rich in Detroit a couple times too

Well, NWA TNA had their first show here in Alabama. Other than that pretty much no one of importance. But, like they say, "Alabama is hell."

This town of mine does not have an indy scene. The last, "big" indy thing to happen here was Dusty Rhodes' little fed swung through town about a year ago, and it featured a main event tag match of Dusty and Dustin vs. Steve Corino and some guy I can't remember.

 

Jacksonville, Florida does have its place in wrestling history books, though, as it was the location of the final WCW PPV, Greed.

As a few people have said.. New York has a decent Indies scene.. we have USA Pro, QWA, and LICW.. usually a lot of ECW guys... Mikey Whipwreck is the CEO of QWA.. Guys like SAT, Red, Jerry Lynn, Chris Candido, Bam Bam Bigelow, Shane Douglas, Xavier, Joey Matthews, Christian York, Roadkill, Da Hit Squad, The Braggiolis, Christopher Daniels, Simon Diamond, and many more are the basic regulars..

Dusty's fed is in georgia so i sometimes travel to see that. i caught the nwa wildside show in cornelia ga. last week. AJ Styles is the only really big name that works there.

These aren't real big names but they are pretty big in the indy scene. Samoa Joe and the Prototype, a few other UPW girls, Ballard Brothers. There is also this guy named Mike Nox. He's not too big but he worked a show with AAA and he is going to do some shows with Zero 1 in the future.

Update on the central Indiana scene: the legendary Ox Baker is now doing color commentary for the WCWO TV show, and is doing a hell of a job for a first-timer, if that counts as someone working the local indy scene.

I didn't know that Baker was still around. Now he's a real-life scary guy, if I remember correctly there were two separate instances of his opponents dying after their matches because of injuries they had suffered at Baker's hands.

Ox sent in a taped promo from his living room a few weeks back before he came in shilling what looked like a cheap cookbook that he wrote. He also stated, "I want all my fans in Indianapolis to come to the WCWO show so that I can HUG them." The man's lost his mind.

a friend that works for the local newspaper claims that Juvi and Konnan will work a Extreme Texas show in Augest at the local Civic Center. Im not sure if this is true but I will mark out if it does happen.

LesnarLunatic.........Harley Race's WLW ( I think it's WLW anyway) runs in western Missouri.I don't know a lot about the promotion but I'm fairly sure they do shows in the KC area.After all,Harley is from there and apparently still lives there because all these wrestlers talk about going into KC for shows and Race's cookouts

I live in Austin Texas and there used to be a really shitty indy here that advertised Sabu but never delivered. They got on the mic and said ECW wouldn't let Sabu wrestle. Dipshits didn't even consider that Sabu had left ECW like 6 months before this happend. They advertised someone else at another show and didn't deliver. After that they were gone.

here in Johnstown, PA we have nothing... We did have an indy fed for maybe 2 months. I made it to the first show but missed the second. Sabu and Matt Borne were at the first one... and the Sandman was booked for the third show, but that never materialized... its too bad.

I live in Austin and there was a group of wrestlers from El Paso that was called GCW. There was no one I recognized , but hey I got front row seats. They promoted the show as Lucha but there was only one regular tag match. The rest was single matches. The show was fun because they really was a lot of interaction with the crowd.There were no guard rails so the wrestlers brawled in the crowd. One time i was bumped into while they brawled next to me. Another time I had to run away from a dive into the crowd. I didn't react quick thinking they weren't going to dive at me. I was wrong. I went up to San Antonio a couple of times and the shows up there wasn't bad.When I went to San Antonio saw a green American Dragon work with Paul Diamond(tag champ with Pat Tanaka that beat the Rockers in AWA, and Kato in WWF) . Must have been buddies with Michaels. There was also Spanky up there. I still wish Dragon worked there regulary instead of California I would go see them.
