'90s Song Tournament Nominations

Recommended Posts

I think I'll do this in a separate thread, just for ease of navigation. So, again, songs must have been released at some point in the '90s. Singles are preferable, but I'll accept well-known non-singles. Surely we can all come up with 20 or so songs that we'd like to nominate, but I'm willing to accept as few or as many nominations as you can come up with. Comments and justifications are welcome, but not mandatory. And to get the ball rolling, here's my list of what I fear will be fairly traditional rockist '90s hits that I liked between the ages of 6 and 16:

Nirvana- "In Bloom"

Smashing Pumpkins- "Today"

Beck- "The New Pollution"

Soundgarden- "Black Hole Sun"

Toad the Wet Sprocket- "Fall Down"

Pavement- "Cut Your Hair"

The Breeders- "Cannonball"

Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy"

Blur- "Coffee and TV"

Fiona Apple- "Criminal"

Fountains of Wayne- "Radiation Vibe"

Weezer- "Buddy Holly"

PJ Harvey- "Down by the Water"

Ace of Base- "The Sign"

Hanson- "Mmmbop" (for Inc)

It occurs to me now that "Linger" is probably a better Cranberries song than "Zombie." I'll go ahead and nominate that one, as well as Elastica's Wire ripoff "Connection" and Belly's "Feed the Tree." Oh, and "Nothing Compares 2 U."

Pixies - Head On (I have no idea what year the Jesus and Mary Chain originally released this, but I don't really consider it relevant because I like this better)

Pavement - Filmore Jive (I would have nominated Cut Your Hair because that got some cool radio play, but you already did and I have "Filmore Jive" listed as my religious views on facebook. So there)

Magnetic Fields - Papa Was a Rodeo

Eminem - My Name Is

The Breeders - Cannonball

The Vaselines - Son of a Gun

The Lemonheads - Buddy

Violent Femmes - American Music

Guided by Voices - Queen of Cans and Jars (was anything on this released as a single? I wanted to have something from it nominated but I'm largely unfamiliar with everything else they did so I have no idea what the single on here was, if there was one, and if there wasn't, what the "notable track was". I just picked my favorite)

Jawbreaker - Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault (this is my sleeper for the tourney)

Belle and Sebastian - Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying (See Queen of Cans and Jars)

CAKE - I Will Survive (Tastiest guitar solo of the 90's)

Nas - NY State of Mind

Presidents of the United State of America - Video Killed the Radio Star

Spice Girls - Wannabee (#1 Everywhere, we can't ignore it)

The White Stripes - The Big Three Killed my Baby

Tullycraft - Pop Song's Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid To Know About (best title of the tourney)

How many is that? I'm not counting. That's your job, Kinetic.

EDIT: Lovefool! I forgot about that. I also nominate that. It rules. And that reminded me of Steal My Sunshine, which I also definitely nominate.

Is there a post somewhere in which you actually articulate why you dislike it? It seems you usually just tell the young acoustic hipsters to get out of your jazzy yard.

Maybe we can have like a play-in vote for a beloved indie tune. "King of Carrot Flowers" vs. "Tractor Rape Chain." Winner goes on to get trounced by TLC, 21-4.

Twiztidmind is breaking unwritten all-you-can-eat-buffet rules. Don't think this won't matter in the other tournament.

It is a good list, though, and captures what is, in my view, the spirit of the tournament very well.

What exactly IS the spirit of the tournament? Are we voting for songs we like now or songs we liked when they came out? Is this just a nostalgia tournament? Because if I'm supposed to vote in character as The Ryan Of 1997 I'm pushing "Falling In Love (Is Hard on the Knees)" to the top 8 and nobody wants to see that.
