Has there EVER been a play-by-play guy who botched more calls/move nam

Recommended Posts

I've been watching some old Nitro circa 96-98 lately and it really has reminded me just how horrible of an announcer Tony Schiavone actually was. It seemed like at LEAST once a match he completely butchered the name of a move (calling powerslams sidewalk slams, calling arm drags armbars, calling regular piledrivers tombstones, calling the jackhammer the jackknife, etc.)...

Has there EVER been a play-by-play guy who botched more calls/move names than Schiavone?

-edit-

I guess the title was a bit too long, lol

Ouch. I can't recall exactly how he was during the Nitro days, but back in the mid-'80s Shiavone was awesome. One of my favorites. He did get fat, shave the mustache, and sell out at some point, though. Maybe he was mailing it in under the WCW banner.

Or, as the Boogie Man used to call him, Tony Shah-von-toe!!

Yeah... Schiavone used to be quite good on the old WCW program in the 80's. Getting passed over for Bischoff in the mid 90's in terms of a higher management job might have lead to him just mailing it in, especially considering Shciavone's time with the company.

Adamle doesn't even count..I'd hardly consider him a play-by-play announcer, he was just the retard from American Gladiators that Dick Ebersol got a $300k/yr job to spew his verbal diarrhea on the air

I like Schiavone. He was comically awful in WCW 99-00 (what wasn't?) but like the other said, he was solid in the old Saturday Nights.

However, the one announcer that dropped in quality due to a lack of passion more than any other in WCW was The Brain. He never had the chemistry he had with Monsoon with Schiavone and just didn't give a damn in the last years. Still, a boring Bobby Heenan is still miles ahead of Mark fucking Madden.

So true. But go back and listen to Madden's commentary for Billy Kidman/Shane Douglas' Viagra on a pole match they had, it was pure comedic genius.

Bobby has pretty much admitted on numerous occasions that WCW was nothing more than a paycheck to him. He took the job for the insurance and to be closer to where his daughter went to college.

Thing is, Schiavone was never that great of an announcer...it was just that he was better than the goofy David Crockett and largely just held a mic while the various awesome guys of the 1980s NWA cut promos. Half of the stuff he said was "We'll be right back, fans!" Then after that he worked some with Jim Ross and was adequate enough to not seem horrid.

Ohhhh, David Crockett.

If anyone can reproduce videotape of Nikita putting the Russian Sickle on Crockett....it would make my year.
