I would say that TBS is the closest to the "WET" network, Full House, Nascar, Saved By The Bell, etc...

 

My point was that there would be an out cry if any station openly admitted taht they were catering to only white people. I don't care about BET, I don't even get it in my town, I don't get MTV 2 either. Wasn't "Yo MTV Raps" on throughout most of the 80s and 90s? As was "Alternative Nation" and the Heavy Metal show who's name I can't remember? Seems to me like Rap music was represetned on a close to equal playing field.

Do you realize that Blacks only make up 12.5% of the population of the country? Wouldn't it then be bad business if all stations targeted black people exclusively?

Considering that about 80% are white, I would go more for white peolpe anyway, you have a better chance for success. Not every black person likes rap music just like not every white person listens to country or rock. Hell I listen to rap despite the fact that many of the songs tell me that I'm "the Devil" or a "Cracker" or whatever.

But, I do agree with Nostril on some things but its a form of entertainment just like any other network they show sex, violents and drugs. I mean when I did have cable I would watch BET about 4 hours a day usually watch Rap City, Hits (dude is funny), and Planet Groove. Anyway, I wish BET would get some sitcoms on there instead of the old ones and less videos. True we make a small precentage of the population and yes due to the numbers game there will be more white shows than any other minority shows. My thing is that why any black shows or any minority other shows being represented on national tv (I don't count yoUr People Network aka UPN)? And you can't say they don't draw ratings because old shows like the Jeffersons, Chico and the Man, Sanford and Son, Cosby Show, Fresh Prince, Different World, All American Girl, and todays shows like My Wife and Kids drew good enough ratings to last for 5 years (Is that average for todays standards?), hell some of them drew top 10 ratings at one time another. Yeah, I know MTV plays rap and all like Yo MTV raps (an hour show that came on once a week) and the thing you said Mike they play mainstream rap/R&B just mainstream no UNDERGROUND Rap/R&B like BET does, MTV just plays the Jay-Z's, Ja Rule's, Nelly's, Eminem's, and Snoop's etc etc, but they don't play people like Dead Prez's, Mos Def's, Rakim's, Pharoroah Monach's, Twista's and any unknown black artist where BET plays everything not matter if they are big names or not, From Million Dollar video budgets to Thousand Dollar video budgets BET plays all kinds of Urban Music not just Rap/R&B, Reggae, and some Dance thats what I like thats my taste of music. MTV tries to blend everything together thats what I don't like. Like Ripper said BET had to come out because at the time the only Black person that was on MTV during the 80's was Micheal Jackson (Well he's a White Woman Now). Damn, I wish Viacom didn't bought out the BOX and turn into MTV2.

Actually, I thought about your UPN assment Mike, there are total of 4 black shows which come on at the same night (bad one's at that) on UPN, so it shouldn't not be considered as a "BLACK" channel compared to the other non minority crappy show's that do come on UPN. Well, atleast incorprate minorities onto shows like Friends How in the Hell they live in New York City the most Diverse place in America and not have any diversty on the show. I like I said before every MAJOR NETWORK is WET tv (sounds like a Porn Channel) there's about 50 to 60 white shows on compared to 6 minority shows on National TV when it could be more than 6 just black shows and Latino's and Asians are not even represented at all. Mike, your thing about Blacks on ESPN/ESPN2 thing I disagree with because the NBA is the only major sport where Blacks are the Majority, because every other sport thats not case so you more subject to watch white athletes more on there than other minorities like Motorcross, Golf, Xtreme stuff, LaCrosse, and etc. As for BET it is bush league when it comes to production theres no doubt about that. Its way low budget I want it to get better improve more shows, more sports, and more movies. By the way, most shows shoot for a certain group of people (the easier way of putting it is blank in my mind right now). Friends never planned on being BIG. They planned on being just as big as probably the Hughley's did. But they ended up getting a huge viewership. Why change the group they went for originally when its not doing anything bad for their ratings and was what got all the people to watch in the first place, apparently? A change could end up killing viewership, and as it stands, they have a year left so oh well.

 

Why shows can start diverse is beyond me, but I guess its easier to shoot for one or the other, rather than go grey. :\

I don't want the shows to be more Diverse, but I would like a more diverse line up. If minorities make up 24% of this contries population, Having 1% of television shows with their demographic in mind is ridiculous.

 

At the same time, you have a show like Friends. Every character on the show is connected by blood, or lifelong friendship or something. Where a minority character would pop up is beyond me, and when people bitch about them not being there I just want them to shut up.

 

I'm not saying change existing programs, but I am saying, do we really need another 30 reality dating/extreme show and another 50 Who Wants to Be a Millionare clones that noone will watch at all when you could point towards a untouched demo graphic.

 

And yes, Africans call themselves Africans. So that point about not being African Americans is pretty much out the window.

There's been a lot of original comedy shows in Britain that have subverted traditional sitcom conventions as far as subject matter, characterisation and editing are concerned. The League of Gentleman, Spaced, I'm Alan Partridge and The Royal Family are all quite unique and distinctive in their style, none of them have canned laughter for a start. Regular/Real life American sitcoms seem terrible compared to how consistantly good animated shows like The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and South Park have been.

"Cita's World" is the only reason why I absolutely hate BET (plus the fact that they have like 20 minute commercial blocks)...the way they stereotypically display black women is attrocious. I don't want the shows to be more Diverse, but I would like a more diverse line up. If minorities make up 24% of this contries population, Having 1% of television shows with their demographic in mind is ridiculous.

The thing is is if you want 6 shows with a white demographic and 80% population watching (480 points) or 4 shows with a white demographic and 80% watching (320 points) and 2 shows with 10% watching (20 points).

 

That's 480 vs. 340 points. From a broadcasting view, the first choice would be the best, despite leaving out a certain demographic.

 

I guess thats why BET exists --- to take the slack that major broadcasters don't use.
