Should Steve Ausin have been Champion?

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

After Jericho won in December, and went on that lenghty title reign (is it just me, or is saying that 3 months is lenghty a blaspheme sin?), should Austin have won the Royal Rumble and then went to WrestleMania to defeat Jericho? Now, we all know that the HHH reign did nothing but hurt things. Then, as much as it saddens me to say, the Hogan title win didn't do any better. Then we move on to Taker, who apparently is without hardly any dirrection...

...unless you count him in a program with the f'n Hardyz dirrection.

So my question, would things be better right now, had Austin became champion, and was still champion right now? We know that he wouldn't have been so pissed off, and would still be in the company, and it sure as hell wouldn't have HURT things any worse, so seriously...

...did WWE drop the ball by not giving him yet another title reign, or are you glad they decided to go with what they did?

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

Not quite sure if things would have ended up better, but if he did win the Rumble in your scenario at least we probably would not have had to watch Jericho be Stuffinme's bitch and could have avoided the Triple H dog angle for Wrestlemania. So yeah I think things would be better if they had gave Austin another title reign. This would have also helped in the Roster Split because then you would have a Champion on both shows that can draw a lot more and potentially ease most fans into the split idea more comfortably.

Yeah, ever since Royal Rumble, I've been asking my self "why not Austin". I mean, Rocky wasn't really able to be in the World Title hunt, and Austin is the guy right below him, and he sure as heel is a much bigger face and start than HHH thinks he is. WWE was going into a slump, and I've always thought that Austin would have been the obvious choice, but hey...

...WWE knows what's best, right, RIGHT??? :o <-----Yes, it is my favorite smile! :o

Yes, I know what he did and I despise him for that. However, business, wouldn't it have made more sense for them to go the route that I propose? I know you shouldn't really cater to any one star, but having him be champion would have kept him from leaving, and it would also have possibly done better business wise for the company, so it would have killed two birds with one stone, errr, angle.

Austin had the belt for most of 2001. It was time to try new things. Most weren't the best ideas, however, if Austin was still champ we would be bitching about not having new champions.

I don't know about that, but I know I wouldn't be complaining. I know that WWE needs someone that the fans care about, and Austin is the best guy for the job, and would have been the best guy for all these months. God knows that HHH, Taker, Hogan, etc... hasn't got the job done yet, so yeah, I think Austin would be the perfect choice right now, and for the past few months.

i don't think so. if austin had gotten the title it would have shown every guy in the lockerroom that if you whine and bitch you will get exactly what you want.

austin should've gotten the belt at vengeance. their effort in trying to create a new star was noble, but it was the BELT that needed elevating by its HOLDER at that point. and the way jericho won didn't end up doing him any good anyway.

they could've still made jericho a star by having him win the rumble and beat austin for the title at wrestlemania. jericho could play up the "i had 2 matches in a row and you stole that victory from me" angle, & the wwF could play up the "austin's never lost a title match at wrestlemania" angle.

OR they could've made trips win the rumble anyway & given us trips v. austin at wrestlemania.

too bad the new world older had to come in. i wonder if vince thinks the trade was worth it.

I'm under the impression that Ausin wasn't whining way back in Jan. when the Royal Rumble took place, all was going ok back then from what I understand, so no, it wouldn't have showed that at all. It would have prevented Austin from whining in the first place.

I think Austin should have been the #1 contender for Judgement Day. Although face vs face title matches are traditionally a bad thing (Nash/Goldberg, anyone?) the Hogan nostalgia run was running out of steam and anyone who was turned off by Hogan would have woken up if they had in alternative in rooting for Austin.

Granted, the world's most ideal Austin/Hogan feud would involve purchasing of that old "Steveamania" ECW bit and using the whole "I think you held me down" thing as a storyline, but seeing how Hogan is almost retired and his ego is so awfully fragile, this would have been the best we could have gotten.

But we didn't... (sigh)

austin could've randomly assaulted people backstage, given them the legdrop, & cut a stevemania promo after every assault. just like the kanyon cutter.

Well, Austin's Hulk impression is not nearly as good as Big Show's, but the fun of the ECW thing was that he was pretty much shooting on Hogan for his treatment in WCW.

Of course, it wouldn't happen, simply because Hogan doesn't want to accept that he ever held anyone down (Oh nooo, he made everyone look good, har har.)

I think giving the Undisputed Title to Chris Jericho first was a good thing. It was something fresh, that was killed by a terrible feud. Had Austin won his 4th Royal Rumble, I think that an Austin/Jericho feud would've been much better for business, because the bulk of the ratings have come from Austin chasing the World Title. Austin winning at WM his 7th World Reign, and keeping it unil Summerslam (then jobbing it to Angle, Booker T, RVD) would've been better for business.......

To rip off a catchphrase.."Oh HELL no!"

I had no desire to see Austin/Superman running around and Stunnering everybody, while having the belt at the same time. People talk about HHH's ring work being bad..Austin was no better for this last little stretch.

No Hogan, No Austin, No HHH. Undertaker should lose the belt soon enough (Summerslam to RVD. *crosses fingers*)

On-a-different-note...

An article in the latest issue of National Enquirer contains in interview with Melanie King, widow of Brian Pillman and friend of Steve Austin. In the interview, King claims that Austin's wife Debra is pushing him back into wrestling and even threatening to leave him if he doesn't. Of course the National Enquirer has a track record of not exactly being the most reliable of news sources so take this with a grain of salt.

RVD should've won the Rumble. RVD and Jericho would've been fine as the 'Mania main event. Let's face it a Dink v. Luna Vachon ME would've still been OK because everyone was buying for Hogan v. Rock. RVD was over enough(and still is) to get a run with title.
