Russo's Big Idea

Recommended Posts

See that plan is insane.... INSANE. Bischoff *not a wrestler* Goldberg *frequently injured* Bret *retired * Mick *retired* Scott Steiner *injured* Shawn *retired*

Insane is right. You don't rename a successful show like Raw like that. Viewers want consistency. Change the whole brand name and they'll panic. The only worse thing you can do is continually move the time slot (this has killed many a series).

If this story is true, Russo is absolutely fucked in the head to tell the power core of the WWE "I'll take over the old show, you guys can move to the new one I just proposed. Oh, and we'll hire a bunch of expensive guys, at least one of which has a raging hatred for Vince." And most of those guys can't even wrestle?

I agree that the split actually should have created a whole new show, maybe WCW Nitro headed by Flair, or maybe a new name like WCW Reborn, something. Keep Raw and Smackdown, and maybe eliminate one of the other, smaller shows to prevent overexposure.

Anyway, that idea deserved to die a quick death. As for Russo's demotion, that may have been over the top, unless he was being a prick about it. If one of the writers comes up with an idea that won't work, you say "Nope, what else have you got?" and move on. i think this discussion may have got a little heated.

Whether it would have worked or not, why did it lead to Russo being demoted? It was one idea. I'm sure other people have come up with worse(like say the first invasion).

Probably because the right people *coughHHHcough* said something to management.

This may be one instance where people are grateful to triple h for holding people down.

Well, knowing Russo, he probably had a temper tantrum when that idea was rejected. Russo doesn't have backup plans.

It just figures that the WWE would demote a guy for an idea that would have made them millions. Granted, it would have been very expensive to pull off (especially if they brought in Goldberg), but certainly adjustements to exactly who would be brought on could be made (you don't need both Goldberg and Steiner IMO; Steiner would be the poor man's Goldberg, I think, if they thought Goldberg would be too expensive). And like others have said, Mick Foley hasn't had much to do with WCW since he lost his ear. But Bischoff, Goldberg, nWo, Flair, Benoit, etc. would cause most fans to completely mark the f*ck out. Most importantly, fans that haven't watch WWE in months, and also perhaps old-school WCW fans would mark out too.

Numerous smarks have come up with a number of "Invasion 2.0" angles very similar to this one. And let's face it, even though it might seem like overbooking to the cynic, this is exactly was the WWE needs right now. This would boost public interest big-time, living up the hyperbole that Vince loves to gibber on about--tsunamis and "ruthless agression."

Fans have been dying for a *legitimate* invasion angle--one where the invaders are credible, famous, and actually win major battles in the war. Changing Raw's name to Nitro alone would increase the ratings by 2- or 3-tenths of a point at least for a month or so, and this temporary increase could be translated into a permanent one if the booking continued to be good.

No, that's not what they need at all. What they need is consistancy. They need a wrestling show that doesn't change direction every other day. They need consistant booking week-to-week, not random "hey, look! THAT guy used to be important" debuts all over. The angle wouldn't make millions; if anything, the amount of money required to recrute all those guys (none of which can wrestle) would more than outway any many it would draw.

InVasions are done. Let them stay dead. Please.

Amen.

And who cares why he was demoted. It's obvious from Russo's past that giving him any kind of final say with the booking is suicide. Keep him in a minimal idea-man position and he might prove useful.

Maybe.

But this was like the worst idea ever. If this is Russo's world beating idea, I can't imagine how bad the other ones were. Because I love analogies.... It would be like hiring someone to write The Golden Girls and they want to turn it into a hardcore porn show! That's a firing offence!

It didn't sound like an absolute worthless idea. The plan of making Raw into Nitro sounds alright, but I'm sick of ideas revolving around wrestlers who have had their time in the spotlight.....

One big problem. WWE fans generally sh*t on WCW. Remember the Booker title match the first time? Or any of the WCW matches. Fans WANTED to hate it because it was WCW. Taking your flagship show and naming it WCW doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

In general I think the invasion idea is bad. Its been done to death badly by WWE to the point Im not sure people want to see it. Having the invasion be done by people who aren't good workers do to age, injury, etc. looks bad too.

"But this was like the worst idea ever."

Worse than the bulldog and hand lotion ones? I can't believe that anyone is satisfied with what we've been getting lately in the way of storylines. Do you want a permanent HHH/Stephanie stranglehold on the "creative" team just so that HHH can look dominant? Because that is what it is all about - ensuring that a very small group of people stays powerful and prominent, regardless of ability. You are saying "yes" to the status quo!

The problem with Invasion angles and Vince is that he seems to be in interested in nothing but making his product look superior and everyone else look like shit. Just look at the first Invasion, Booker T was used as Rock's bitch boy, he didn't even try to get the "wcw/ecw" groups over. He just used them to job out to his "superior" stars. Only RVD could not be denied with the huge pops he was getting. I fear even if Russo's idea went through somehow, Vince would find another way to mess it all up.
