The Mid-Card Really IS Wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest TheBigBadBootyDaddy

I've been thinking about it.  And once you get to the Main Event, your match quality DIES, so does your style, save a very few, and then you turn into catchphrases and small movesets.

When you think of HBK at his finest, what do you think of?

Wrestlemania X the ladder match

How about Rock and HHH?  Summer of '98, the IC title Feud, and that ladder match.

What was Stone Cold's firiest moments, Intercontinental Title match against Owen Hart.

Those moments right before you hit the spotlight, and the moments you first shine are the climaxes of most Wrestling Careers, not their 15th main Events.

Good points. But a wrestlers heat is definitely at their fifteenth main event. Why do you think this is? Psychology? Better acting?

Hmm...

HHH and Rock have become much better workers in the Main Event. SCSA hasn't got worse.

HHH & Rock weren't that good in 1998 other than the Ladder Match.  They were much better in the Main Events.

Michaels also had better matches in the main events aside from the ladder match.

Austin is a little different, as his best WWF matches occurred during the Bret Hart feud, although he did do well in 2001.  The injury is probably the reason for this.

I totally agree with you here.  Austin and Rock did a ***** match at last year's Wrestlemania.  Triple H can still do a good match when he wants to.

Sometimes it all comes down to fearing injury.   That's why the guys from ECW tone down thier style.  Because with more hardcore moves, more chance that injury can occur.

And Shawn Michaels was pretty good throughout his whole main event.  The only reason why Ladder Match #2 wasn't as good as the original was because... 1) Ramon blew a couple spots, and 2) They didn't want to risk the chance of injurying themselves with a big move.

Shawn Michaels was good till the end, just wasn't given another opponent like Ramon or Bret Hart in situations where they could do ***** matches.

I've watched the second ladder match recently and it's better than the first besides the botched ending and the destroying of Shawn's leg looked painful. It definitely flowed better than the first.

As for the Midcard vs. Main Event, once upon a time, the WWF actually elevated midcarders into Main Event territory (Stone Cold, HHH, Rock, Foley) and business boomed! As for the matches, the midcard has been suffering for awhile but in 2000, there were great midcard matches(scotty-Malenko, 1st Table Match) and great main matches.

It's usually dependent on the wrestlers and the amount of time they are allowed to tell their story.

I think Vince has this idea where, when a wrestler is in the mid-card, they have to perform there asses off to get to main event status, then when they are main-eventers, there matches turn into pretty much brawls. Now, as of late, the main-events have a good flow and nice sets of moves. I remember when Austin was main-eventing, mostly to a heel Triple H, Austin's offense consisted mainly of punches and smashing HHH's head onto something. Now though, main-events are still filled with wrestling, I feel, but the mid-card is where the real good stuff is.

Depends who your talking about. Mr Perfect was and still is a wicked mid carder, and my favourite match ever was him in his Career match with Flair on Raw in '92. he also made the Texas Tornado look good despite his dazzleing Rock-esk move set. Nowadays, i don't like edge seeing as he complete lacks a gimmick and is stealing Christian push, plus the fact for the last god knows how many weeks every match regal's been in edge has come in and speared him before the finish. I've heard about building a feud but its getting to the point of ridiculousness. The same things happening with Van Dam and Goldust. Quite frankly its boring. We need more cruiserweights and more Perfect, angle adn Kane

Austin Rock *****?  That ending doesn't deduct anything?

HHH can still have a good match when he wants too?   Have you seen him since his return?  He moves like the Big Show.

I liked the ending at Wrestlemania.  That's partly why I do give it *****.

How can you justify that?

Interference is bad enough as it is...but slow and boring interference with a McMahon on TV is the worst.

wow bps, just shoot on mcmahon all the time why dont you

Once you get to the main event you have to Brawl like Steve Austin.  The last really good wrestlingwise main event i can remember is HBK/Taker in the casket match.  Michaels had more than some flashy elbow or some beer chugging or a knee to the face.
