Guest TheSmarkzone Report post Posted June 29, 2002 Memo to the WWE: your grand idea to split up all of the established tag teams so that they can embark on singles careers and feed your little brand extension has TANKED. Billy & Chuck have NO competition. It's so bad that they had to throw together the team of Rikishi and Rico. Don't get me wrong, I like the new duo of Val Venis and Hardcore Holly, but that doesn't make a tag team division. I can see splitting up the APA since Faarooq doesn't have that much time left in the ring. But the Dudleyz split has been a disaster, and it went EXACTLY as everybody predicted it would: D-Von's career has headed straight down the commode and Bubba Ray is just kinda...there. And no, it doesn't matter how many times they give D-Von a tainted win over HHH, I just don't think that he is the "future main eventer" that J.R. says he is. Speaking of the Ross Report, I heard that the Hardyz are the next team to go solo.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted June 29, 2002 It's the typical WWF problem. They destroy something before they've created something to replace it. With the split, they axed two of their longest-running tag teams, without coming up with anyone to replace them beforehand. There's no build--it's just, okay, the old teams are out, and...here's a new team! No build, no nothing. With the exception of Billy & Chuck, none of the teams that started to pick up momentum this year (Spike/Tazz, Snow/Maven, Albert/Scotty) are even around. They seem to be booking on the fly, and if they're going to make decent events, they need to be looking at least 2 months ahead.
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted June 29, 2002 I think D-Von's been pretty good as the 'Reverend'. Well, good promos anyway, but boring matches. But overall you're right. It seems like McMahon looks at an established tag team, and thinks "WOW! I can have two good singles wrestlers instead of one good tag team!" while unfortunately forgetting WHY these particular guys were in tag teams to begin with. They obviously have shortcomings. The APA especially made no sense to break up. This seemed like the perfect situation for two guys in the twilight of their career. There is no way either guy will make any headway as a singles competitor. Hell, they're already putting Faarroq in makeshift tag teams because they don't know what to do with him. Guest Prince Paul Report post Posted June 29, 2002 They surely shouldn't have broken up the APA. I"M hoping they can do something with Storm and Christian. Those guys make way better champs than Chuckabilly.
Guest Baggy Sac Report post Posted June 29, 2002 I dont really worry about the belts that much. The tag division always goes in cycles. Remember when the Headbangers were champs? How about the Godwinns? Then teams like the New age Outlaws came out. It's only a matter of time until another team comes out.
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted June 29, 2002 Headbangers for tag champions? Are they available right now? Can we get them on the phone..
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted June 29, 2002 Hopefully the Island Boyz will be here to save us soon.
Guest Austin3164life Report post Posted June 29, 2002 This is the WWE so logic is just tossed in the garbage. The Split was one of the worst ideas in the long history of bad pro-wrestling ideas..........
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Report post Posted June 29, 2002 I think the split is a good idea in theory, but its execution was about 10X worse than the invasion.
Guest Brian Report post Posted June 29, 2002 Exactly. It was great in theory, but they blew it early. They can still salvage it.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted June 29, 2002 There are plenty of talented guys just sitting around doing nothing. You could have Sean O'Haire and Jindrak form up again to be S&M, Storm and Christian as the tag team of the Team Canada; Island Boyz; Kanyon could play into a tag team when he gets back with Mike Awesome. What they need to do is make the belts float.
Guest papacita Report post Posted June 29, 2002 The most logical idea for the split, IMO, would've been to dispute the Undisputed Title and split the belts evenly among the shows. If they wanted titles to float, then the Tag Belts definitely should've been one of them. Instead, what we get is some overly complicated draft that ends up putting all singles titles on Raw, leaving Smackdown without a major secondary title other than the Cruiserweight, and put the Tag belts on SmackDown where there are no other established challengers to face the Champions. Now I'm not sure if this was a result of on the fly booking and Vince just refuses to admit that he made a mistake or what, but it seems to me that the whole problem with the split and a lot of other things that the WWE does is that the WWE tries so hard to be unpredictable, they end up fucking everything up in the end. As far as teams go...APA and the Hardyz should've broken up a long time ago, because with APA, it seemed like 90% of the focus was on Bradshaw, and the Hardyz got stale after Jeff's series with RVD, and the botched break-up angle from last year (which wasn't that bad, but was killed for some reason) killed whatever momentum they had going for them, so they should've been split anyway. As for Bubba and D-Von...their problems probably could've been fixed by with a face turn or something, and I really don't think they should've been split. Both of their singles runs haven't been bad, but they're not as good when they're not together.
Guest The Superstar Report post Posted June 29, 2002 I was just watching WWF Armageddon 1999 today and I realized how deep the division was, at least compared to now. There was an 8 team Battle Royal, featuring: Dudleys Edge and Christian Hardys Acolytes Mean Street Posse Godfather & Mark Henry Headbangers Too Cool and also, there was the tag title match, featuring Rock and Sock Connection New Age Outlaws 10 teams, and they were teams that actually stayed together (for the most part, not sure about Godfather/Mark Henry) *Sigh*
