Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted July 2, 2002 The only problem I have with most band opinion posts are that I don't know enough about the majority of the bands to say. That's why I liked this recent semi-popular bands edition, because for most of them I knew what I was talking about. I'm not one of those people who goes "this and this band sucks" without knowing what I'm talking about, which is why I don't like the more specific ones because I can't post, and thus can't p05t wh0r3 in them... Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 2, 2002 jesus i'm stupid...it took me 10 minutes to figure out that this poll was asking if opinion polls suck, and wasn't another opinion poll asking if a certain band sucked. i kept thinking "how can i say yes or no, they don't even have a band listed"... Guest Kinetic Report post Posted July 2, 2002 I think they're pretty lame. Then again, I hate the "What Are You Listening To Right Now" thread, too. My real beef with that thread is that people just list what they're listening to and it doesn't lead to any sort of discussion. So what's the point, really, other than showing off? As far as the "What's Your Opinion On These Bands..." type things, my problem again is that it's just a bunch of random opinions and no discussion.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted July 2, 2002 my problem again is that it's just a bunch of random opinions and no discussion. It's difficult to have a discussion about certain types of music when so few people here share your taste. I posted a lengthy (by my standards) review of the new Sonic Youth album, and it yielded very little. In a dream world, it would've resulted in two pages of posts, but I know that very few people here know Sonic Youth and/or like them.

I like many bands but about 90% of them aren't mainstream where I believe is where the majority of people in this forumn get there favorites from. I have always believed opinions are like assholes, but hey I guess it's better then nothing. I did like your Sonic Youth post but personally they aren't my cup of tea. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 2, 2002 The previous boards I use to go, IGN, had different categories of music genre, like Rock, Metal, Punk, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Dance, and even a general and a community board as well. Since The Smart Marks is not a real popular place, most of them come for the wrestling aspect, not music, video games...and such and such, so conversations and opinions are not that popular here. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted July 2, 2002 My reason for not replying in that thread is pretty much the same as Godthedog's. I haven't heard Murray Street yet, though the consensus has it to be a pretty good album. Plus, I'm really not much of a Sonic Youth fan. I'll meet you back here later this month when the new Flaming Lips album comes out, though.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted July 2, 2002 I think it's ok to ask people about 1 band, cos then you can discuss it, instead of just getting a load of lists of yes/no/don't know. There's been a few too many.

There's been a few too many. Now there you go. Ask about one band. Why did it take so long. It would be easier to discuss all the albumns, members, etc if it was just one. Being only able to write a line or two just doesn't do justice for the band or the person asking.

As far as the "What's Your Opinion On These Bands..." type things, my problem again is that it's just a bunch of random opinions and no discussion. Yea, but that kind of random opinion vs. opinion thing was the basis for the late, great "Make Contentious Statements" thread. godthedog hit the nail on the head when he said that people have such different music tastes that it's impossible to have any form of civilized discussion. The best we could hope for is a few people to agree on a particular band and "ally" against everyone else posting in the forum, who would then ignore many other of the "alliance"'s posts relating to music (especially music similar to what the disagreement was on) because they didn't agree with the original statement. Yea, but if you just ask about one band at a time, or worse, one album at a time, there's going to be TONS of unnecessary topics and posts to clog up the music forum (not that there's very many "important discussions" to miss in the music forum). Also, if the band is one that nobody knows (e.g. that Arch Enemy band in your sig swan... who would know that band other than maybe Drezzy?), it's not even going to bring up a lot of replies or discussion, because it's hard to back up musical opinions because all the "evidence" is interpretive depending on musical taste. That's why I created an edition of bands people should know a little bit about to offer an opinion. I omitted bands from the list I listen to but no one would know. When people spout off band names of underground music no one has heard of, they do it just to look like music snobs with an "I'm more underground than thou" attitude. Because you guys recognized the names on the list, the topic stayed bumped up to the first page. And it was an intelligent, thoughtful, and engaging list of varied opinions. The proof is there. I take issue with that. If I ever spout off about "underground" bands, it's just because that's the kind of music I listen to by and large. I assume that's why other people do it, too. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 3, 2002 Most of us listen to underground or non-mainstream music because of the garbage that is so popular right now. If the music board was split up with, Rap, Hip-Hop, Metal, Punk, Rock, and a General Board, there would be more discussions in the genre, but you need a lot of people do this, since the smarks are semi-popular

What a bunch of crap. I don't go off on tangents about people liking Third Eye Blind or whatever, so don't get all self-righteous just because some people like to talk about music you never heard of. It has nothing to do with elitism; a bonus of talking about "underground" bands in front of those not familiar with them is that you might turn them on to something different. There's nothing wrong with that.

It has nothing to do with elitism; a bonus of talking about "underground" bands in front of those not familiar with them is that you might turn them on to something different. There's nothing wrong with that. While I don't think anyone hear goes off on tangents about people liking popular or semi-popular bands, I know personally when I see all these mentions of bands I don't know, I feel not l33t enough, and ever-so-slightly alienated. The reason for this is, while you're right about the possibility of opening one up to a new band, the sad fact is that more often than not there is no way I will ever come across one of the band's CDs in any stores near me or even via file-sharing, and thus to a degree I do feel like it's being shoved in my face, even though I'm aware that's not anyone's intentions. It's just that in a world where mainstream music is so "blah" (for lack of better words), to be underground is to be "cool", and to be "more underground" than someone is a big deal, at least to some people (like me). ...unless you just want me to show up like a dick and post "who the hell is [insert band name here]?" everytime a band is posted that I don't know. Granted, I could always just NOT post... but I have to stay involved with my community (even though that would technically be the Movies, DVD, etc. folder since those are the columns I write for the site). Plus, in a few months I'll be at college, where all the "underground" music fans WILL have a "holier than thou" attitude. I'm not saying if it's not accessible, don't talk about it, but to maybe throw a few bones for us who can't afford to import the latest black metal cd's from Sweden or wouldn't even know where to start to look for the hippest indie band that has no nationwide distribution.
