Guest Downhome Report post Posted July 3, 2002 If Major Leage Baseball is dealt yet another strike, how will you feel about the sport? Is it possible that it would piss you off enough to just NOT watch it anymore, or will you just take it on the chin once again and just start watching like always when it returns again? I know MANY people that have said that if they stirke again over all of the b.s., that they are through with the sport for good, never to return. Now obviously some of these people are just talking out of emotions, but I'm sure some really wouldn't come back. So, how will you feel? Will you give up on the sport, or will you return once again? Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I just started to watch baseball again last year. So if another season was lost to a strike I probably would not watch again.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I was a huge fan in the 80s and early 90s It took Mark and Sammy chasing Marris to bring the fans back in the game after the last strike...now with everyone having 50 homer seasons I don't think the same thing could happen twice. If baseball strikes I won't watch again...I hardly do as it is. The players are just too hard to relate to these days...for a guy making $20,000 a year it's hard to take their side in a strike as well. Players are just coming off as money hungry babies
Guest RobJohnstone Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I took it on the chin last time. I grew up like 2 blocks from shea stadium. I cannot stand greed in sports, if they strike again, fuck em, they won;t be getting my money for ticket revenue or merchandise. If those greedy bastards strike again god help us. Can you honestly imagine arod and jeter sitting around talking about how little they make? --Rob
Guest Downhome Report post Posted July 3, 2002 Blah, it seems that the majority that I've asked this says they will not go back. I don't know how many would stick to that, but it is still something MLB best keep their eye on.
Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I don't know how many would stick to that, but it is still something MLB best keep their eye on. The problem for baseball is that they are having many teams that are floundering as is so if a strike took any fans away they could lost 10 to 12 teams. Look at attendance from before the strike and after you figure now is about 75-80 % of what it was. If they take any hit they will be down to the 60-70% and that is trouble. Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted July 3, 2002 It depends on what happens. Last time we lost the World Series and went back to the same bargaining agreement they had before. Nothing was solved. This time that fans are far more pissed off with MLB than they were in 1994. Anything short of the owners obtaining a hard salary cap will cripple the league. Guest Human Fly Report post Posted July 3, 2002 There are still guys every now and then who call into Sports talk shows that refuse to go to a game because of the '94 strike. I think the potential strike isn't getting as much press yet as pre-strike '94 is because not many people believe they will be stupid enough to go through with it. Think of all the teams that are having a hard time drawing fans now. How many hardcore fans will they alienate if there is another strike? They had better hope they get really good, really fast when play starts up again, or they won't draw many fans at all. If they do strike I wouldn't be surprised to see around 5 teams fold. Guest DrTom Report post Posted July 3, 2002 The last time the players went on strike, I had a partial season-ticket plan for the Orioles. At the end of that season, I declined to renew my season tickets, and sent a letter to Peter Angelos saying that if he and his fellow owners were going to bicker over money, they were no longer going to have mine to bicker over. The first time I went back to a game was Cal Ripken's consecutive games #2130 and 2131. His chase of Gehrig is what saved baseball from itself, btw. McGwire and Sosa certainly brought the fans out, but baseball had hit its nadir in popular support in 1995, and it took Ripken chasing history to bring the fans back. After those games, I didn't go to another game for three years. Baseball's in my blood, so I don't think I could ever not be a fan. I've tried not to like the Orioles as they've spent the past few seasons pissing their franchise away, but I always end up cheering for them again. It's too hard not to. I'd probably take a serious haitus from going to any games if the players went on strike, but I'd still watch baseball on TV and I'd still play rotisserie. Guest Smues Report post Posted July 3, 2002 Been a baseball fan since I was like 5, and this season more then ever I love it, but if they strike this season they lose me for life. Period. This is finally the year I managed to plan a trip down to Atlanta to see my Braves (living in washington with only an AL and being a Braves fan sucks balls). If They strike and I miss those games, I'll never watch another minute of baseball.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted July 3, 2002 A strike would suck because the Twins have a good chance at making the postseason but I'll still watch baseball and go to some games.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I think baseball's far too ingrained into my blood for me to simply quit, but I definitely would think twice about paying for tickets so that ARod can buy a third Mercedes.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted July 3, 2002 The sad thing is if they do strike again I will prob watch cause I love the Braves and don't know what I'd w/o them. But as a kid who was 9 in 1994- Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't strike again
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted July 3, 2002 The closest stadium is 2 1/2 hours away, so I rarely go to live major league games, so that's not an issue. If they strike, no big deal. I'll find something else, to watch, and enjoy baseball when it comes back. Why is everyone so sure that another strike will cripple baseball? If the moguls haven't killed baseball before, they sure won't now. Can you honestly imagine arod and jeter sitting around talking about how little they make? No, but I can imagine they sit around talking about how the owners have fucked over fans in Montreal and Minnesota. Greedy players? When's the last time a player asked for $400 million in tax dollars so he could build himself a new mallpark where HE would reap the revenues and charge you more than you paid to watch a game at the old stadium? Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted July 3, 2002 Its sad and ironic that the one thing that could save the game (An actual salary cap) could be the thing that kills baseball (if they go on strike, its the key point)
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I'll probably end up watching again, I mean I've been watching as long as I can remember. I wish they would just drop teams that don't win, though, then there wouldn't be these players that belong in the minors, but are playing in the pros, just because there's roster spots open. KC Royals TB D-Rays FLA Marlins (Move) Expos SD Padres CO Rockies I mean there's 6 teams that exist for the sole purpose of losing 80-100 games a year, and in colorado's case, they have a stadium used to pad people's stats. Both FLA teams are a friggin' joke, I should know, I have watched about 75 D-Rays games, and about 50 Marlin's games down here in FLA. It's just bad. I say fuck the owners and the players. Put a cap on, and for every ARod guy that makes 15 million plus a year, then doesn't perform, or gets hurt, cut thier contract. Make it guaranteed money. Of course that's never gonna happen, because the players won't sign. They'll make the $$$ even when thier on strike, so what do they care?
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 3, 2002 i really couldn't care if baseball goes on strike
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 3, 2002 i was a pretty big baseball fan in 1994 and when they striked I stopped watching baseball all together. i haven't really tuned back in, except to watch the odd world series game.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted July 3, 2002 If they strike I'll come back because I love the game so much, but I'll probably not cheer for any of the greedy players who were/will be out spoken about how "they're doing thid for the young guys, it could be your kid we're fighting for." That's the biggest load of horse shit I've ever heard and Barry Bonds said something along those lines. The scary thing is he might really beleive that. Guest Kingpk Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I'll come back, much like many others who said they would leave forever after '94. About Montreal, I don't get it. They have a pretty good little team with a couple of All-Stars in Vidro and Guerrero, a pretty good pitching staff (better now with Colon), and they play to crowds of 2,000-3,000 a night and play at a piss-poor stadium (that I've been to....twice!) that makes Fenway look good. If they move to Virginia, it would help them immensly. I also think the Devil Rays should never have been created in the first place.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted July 3, 2002 Nor should the D-Backs, The Rockies, The Marlins, The Blue Jays, The Expos, The Brewers (they should have just let the Pilots go out), The Angels, or The Padres but they are leaving either.
Guest swan Report post Posted July 3, 2002 I live just outside the burbs of Chicago and can honestly say I do not hit the games like I use too. Too much half assing, crying and bitching. They strike I'll never watch nor attend a game again. Screw 'em. Those big money contracts will be gone and teams will go away. We got a new independant league team here and that's were I go to see people playing ball for the love of it. They give a damn about the fans and how they are doing. Baseball at it's purist form
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 3, 2002 hey, keep the expos in montreal. although i haven't seen a game of theirs in years canada doesn't need to lose another pro sports to the american market.
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted July 3, 2002 hey, keep the expos in montreal. although i haven't seen a game of theirs in years canada doesn't need to lose another pro sports to the american market. Why? The city obviously doesn't care about them anymore and their stadium is a crappy relic of a crappy Summer Olympics. I don't think Montreal will pitch in to build a new place, so why not move them to D.C.?
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted July 4, 2002 man that'll be 2 years in a row that the yanks didnt win the world series if there is a strike, since i was only a fan since 1987 (i was 3) I do not think I would be able to handle this 2 years that's just way too much (winks at Some Guy) fuck the greedy bastards
Guest DrEvil Report post Posted July 4, 2002 I just went to my first game in over a year, which was probably my third in about 2 years. It was a great game, the score was close throughout it, there were a few home runs hit, defence was good, pitching was good, in an incredible fit of excitement, the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, then won it in the tenth on a home run. I fell asleep during the game, and the only thing that peaked my interest was the fight that almost broke out three rows below me. I have completely lost interest in the game and I don't think I'd even notice if they went on strike.
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted July 5, 2002 Boo hoo, the Yanks can't win the Series. The real shame is that, once again, the Expos would be deprived of a pennant race and possible postseason.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 5, 2002 Gotta move the Expos. They have a good staff, that Colon trade will help them tremendously, and Vidro is the best baseball player that people have never heard of, but Canadia just doesn't care about baseball. I mean, who can really blame them? Have Montreal ever been a threat to win anything? Nope, unless you count the last time they struck, (Montreal in 1st over the Braves by like 10 games). Move them to DC. The DC area should have at least one of every major sports franchise. They have NBA, NHL, NFL, hell even MLS!! The D-Rays will wither and die, until it becomes like a Buffalo Sabres/Expos thing, when the league takes over.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 5, 2002 The real shame is that, once again, the Expos would be deprived of a pennant race and possible postseason. just like in the motherfucking season where they were in first and set to make the playoffs. that really turned me off of baseball. imagine if the expos kept winning that season. i bet their attendance would have raised a lot and who knows what could have carried on to the next season.
