so what does everyone think of Dave Matthews Band?

personally... I think they are pop garbage. I used to think that they might be decent musicians but no... My cousin showed me their VH1 Storytellers show and all Matthews did was tell boring, pointless stories and strum bar chords all night. It was bad!

Also, the only fans I know of DMB are a bunch of preps... haha. So when you see them in concert, its like a big Abercrombie and Fish fashion show.

and lastly.... they ARE NOT a jam band. Widespread Panic is a jam band! not shitty Dave Matthews.

I really greatly dislike the Dave Matthews Band. Just a bunch of boring saps playing terrible pop songs and extended "jams." The thing with jam bands, incidentally, is that the vast majority of them suck. The foremost jam band of all time is undoubtedly the Grateful Dead and they were absolutely brutal, as far as I'm concerned. The Dave Matthews Band is really just further proof that hippies and fraternity members have bad taste in music.

Well I like Dave Matthews. He puts on a wonderful show. He has worked his way up from the clubs/frat parties. He mixes his albums up so that you can hear different musical styles mixed together. He isn't your typical rock star, ie. he is a goofy looking guy, but he still got over based on his musical gifts and such. In other words he has paid his dues. So I can appreciate that. But to each his own, if you don't like him, then more power to ya.

They're huge on the college campus networks, though, as they're essentially the most accessible jam band since the 'Dead.

Outside of Timmy and Dave doing the acoustic deal at Luther College, however, I'm not really a huge fan of DMB outside of a couple of songs.

And Everyday was particularly atrocious.

I have nothing against Dave Matthews. He's a good pop musician and a great live act with a pretty dedicated fan base. As for him "not being a jam band", how isn't he? He not only has a wide assortment of songs, but also extends on them in some form or another when they are played live. Unless I've been getting it wrong, that's a jam band.

But Kinetic, about The Grateful Dead, did you hear their studio or live material? One characteristic in most jam bands is that their studio material is nowhere near as good as their live show.

Everyday was not their best work at all. For the most part, i liked it but i expected more. Im not into their new single but i probably will get their new cd just because i have all their cds. They put on a really good live show as well.

What's your definition of a "jam" band? DO you mean like those jazz musicians who play for like twenty minutes, or like those Jimi Hendrix lost recording sessions?

YES they are. DMB got over on tapes from live shows in which they jam extensively. Listen to their live albums. Red Rocks '94 and Chicago '99 are great examples.

I'm a huge DMB fan and I'll admit that.

I wouldn't necessarily count jazz musicians as "jam bands", because improvisation is the basis of jazz, and thus every jazz musician should "jam" to a degree every time they hit ANY studio or stage, as it's a defined aspect of the art.

I'd call unissued Jimi Hendrix recordings closer to what my definition of "jam band" is, because several songs from those types of sessions are unique extensions of the songs that only occurred during that one playing. The defining factor though, is not only an extended version of the song, but whether the extension was planned or improvised. If improvised, then yea, it's a "jam" session.

Damn... it feels so weird to talk seriously about the definition of jam sessions.
