"The Powerpuff Girls Movie" Review

Recommended Posts

Guest chirs3

Starring: Oh hell, I don't know... Tom Kane does the Professor's voice I think, but other than that...

Story: The City of Townsville is in trouble. Lawlessness and crime and other icky things run rampant in the community, and the city longs for help. Professor Utonium steps up to the plate, hoping to create the perfect little girls who could maybe turn the town around.

While in his lab, he gets a big ole' mixing pot and pours in sugar, spice, and "everything nice", and begins stirring. But his mischevious lab monkey, Jojo, is running around breaking crap, and he bumps into the Professor, who in turn cracks open a tube of "Chemical X". The Chem-X falls into the mixing pot, and there's a big explosion.

When the Professor comes to, he's freaked out at seeing three bug-eyed big headed cuties in matching colored dresses standing in front of him. Introductions, name giving, and a little good parenting later...

(psst! The blast also gave Jojo a big brain! He runs away after seeing the Professor go gaga for the girls.)

... the girls go to their first day of school, and in an ill-fated game of "Tag", they end up destroying most of Townsville. One of the little comic gems of this movie is the next day's headline: "LITTLE BUG-EYED WEIRDO GIRLS BROKE EVERYTHING!"

The townspeople lash out at them, and the Professor, who's thrown in jail. The girls have to walk home from school since he can't pick them up, and they get very very lost. So lost, that they run into a monkey with a giant brain named Jojo... hmm... Jojo convinces the girls that he too is good, but was shunned for his unusual intelligence and appearance. He then proposes to them the "Help make the town a better place" machine, and in order to redeem themselves in the eyes of the town, the girls unwittingly help him build something faaaar worse...

Yep.

The Good: I hope you like groan-inducing puns, because this movie's full of 'em. And they aren't blatantly set up, so they can sometimes fly right over your head if you're not paying attention. I think someone in the production crew soaked the film reel in a tub of "Cute", because this movie reeks of it, and despite being a manly man (well... a guy at least), it was impossible to sit through this movie without smiling. The characters look as good as ever, as does the town, but the animators went ridiculously over the top with some of the animation, like the craters Bubbles makes, or the erupting fire-spewing ground in Blossom's wake. It's really quite a sight. There are some good sight gags here and there, too. A King Kong parody and a few potshots at Planet of the Apes are welcome additions.

The Middle: Just something neither good or bad I wanted to address, and that's the darkness. Some critics complained that certain scenes were very dark, almost downright violent. While I think that's going a bit far, there are a few scenes that are creepy, and might (stress MIGHT) freak out toddlers with weak bladders. I personally thought it was kinda cool, but it did sorta clash sometimes with the rest of the movie.

The Bad: This movie has a beginning and an end, but not much of a middle. The beginning is a bit rushed, too - the girls are there about two minutes in. And while 85 minutes seems ideal for a kids animated movie, I think they could've fattened it up a bit. Also, Mojo Jojo lacks the humor usually found in the series, probably because he has to come off as a credible villain. He's got a few good lines, but what I sorely missed was his reiterating of every little thing in a dozen different ways - he does it in the movie, but it's not really all that funny. And the ending theme song was butchered in the credits.

Overall: You should know what you're in for just by seeing the previews, so you don't really need any critic to tell you if it's good or not. It's fun, it's silly, it's obscenely cute, and funny in bits and pieces. You'll leave the theatre grinning, but also maybe wishing it had a little more. It's not essential viewing by any means, but I'd recommend it as a worthwhile 90 minutes of entertainment. Here's hoping for a sequel that improves upon it.

Chirs3 gives "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" seven point five "PICKLE CART KILLERS~!" out of ten.

I hear the guy who voices Mojo Jojo also voiced the phone in Scream.

Now I can't help but picture the phone making the calls and repeating everything like Mojo Jojo...

"Why do you wanna know my name?"

"I'd like to know who I'm looking at. I want to know the identity of the person who I am currently watching. If someone were to ask me who I am looking at, I would have to say 'I don't know', whereas I would like to tell them who you are, but I don't know therefore I am asking! Although I am right outside your house, I do not know to whom it is that I am watching, despite my superior intellect!"

or

"What is your favorite scary movie. That is to say, out of all the movies that scare you, what one do you enjoy the most? If you could only watch one scary movie, which of them would it be? Which scary movie do you like more than ANY other scary movie?"

That'd be funny...yeah...

chirs did the summary pretty well. Good job. I pretty much agree with the review... I liked the movie much. Although it did tell a morale, I still found it very entertaining. Maybe that's just because I'm a big PPG fan. :D

I am yet to see the movie, though I most likely will this weekend. One thing that I hear about from almost everyone are the extreme dark scenes. Are they really THAT noticeable? I noticed a bit of blackness in the preview, but I'd like the opinion of someone who has actually seen the movie. Thanks.

There are scenes with some intense... weirdness... and I could see a small kid getting a little scared over 50 bloodthirsty raging screaming shrieking monkeys in test tubes.

But really, a good dose of dark was needed, because the movie had to be built around Mojo. If he was the bumbling fool of the TV series, it would be a pretty short movie.

One more thing I would've liked is the Gangrene Gang having a little more screen time when they first meet the girls. When they just suddenly appear, with it being nighttime and thunderstormy around them, they look insanely cool and eVil.

Well, the previews all said "The Powerpuff Girls in their first movie!" So what do you want in the second?

Amoeba Boys as constant comic relief, and either "Him" or a combonation of Mojo and "Him" as the main villains.

Yeah... I was sort of hoping for "Him", but oh well. "Him" and Mojo are truly cool villians.

Plus, you can't go wrong with a little more Bubbles... I mean when she kissed the Professor and called him 'Daddy', I truly said, "AWWWW!" out loud. She's just SO cute. :)

Like I said, to each their own.

When I saw the movie, I saw a couple (probably in their 20s) just come in and sit. No kids or anything, so I can really see how male fans like it. It's a good show (especially when they let it all hang loose and forget doing morale episodes).

Plus... how could anyone turn away from this face? Pict9.jpg

Someone else already has Dawn Marie's (exceptional) ass! If I didn't have a manly e-wrestler image to uphold, via my sig, I'd find a clearer and brighter version of that picture and sig it.
