Plain Names?

Recommended Posts

Guest SuperTonyJaymz

Have you noticed lately that the WWE has been going for plain names? Like John cena instead of The Prototype? Why is that? I mean, yeah a plain name offers less gimmick burden(see venis, val) but atleast give the guys something. Like why not "The Prototype" John cena.

well if you look back...look at all the "regular" names that got over(or are trying to)...or that sound like regular names...

Brock Lesnar

Kurt Angle

Chris Jericho (sounds real to me)

Chris Benoit

Any of the Harts

Shawn Micheals

Kevin Nash

Scott Hall

The TEers...

etc etc etc

Sometimes nicknames don't matter....sometimes they do....it depends on if you are just a name with no talent...or a force to be reckoned with....

would you consider "Paul Levesque" to be a viable World Champion?

(and I mean the NAME...not the actual person)

No, on both counts.

Once again...before that gets started....I'm not flame-baiting....

I was making a valid point....same thing goes for "Dwayne Johnson" or "Micheal Hickenbottom"

Complaining about generic names? Careful, or you might end up with Duke the Dumpster Droese, 2003 edition.

well Test has been a failure

Does Andrew Martin really sound much better?

Personally though, I marked for Prototype when I saw him live, and had no idea that he was the same person as John Cena... why the hell can't he stay as Prototype, or at least John "Prototype" Cena?

minus the Texas Tornado (shudder) the Von Erichs have to be the best family to exemplify your "plain name" theory.

I dunno. I wouldn't mind Shawn being called Michael Hickenbottom. We could call Sweet Chin Music the "Hick Kick". That's pretty cool!

But I do think John Cena needs something a little stronger to become a major name.

"the Hick Kick" would have been Jamie Knoble's finisher if he would have been on TV during the Invasion...

...if Test would have came in as Bradshaw's friend he could have been "The Oral Exam"

Wanna know somthing weird? Andrew Martin sat next to me in Psych class last year. :)

They still may go with the name "Prototype." Remember when Big Show first debuted, he was Paul Wight for a few weeks and then they tried "Big Nasty" before settling on "Big Show" I think after WCW threatened legal action because it was so similar to "Big Sexy."

i like when wrestlers use their real names or variations of their real ones. cheesy nicknames suck for wrestlers.

I could do without the gimmick names in most cases. You might need a gimmick name when your name is Paul Wight or Monty Sopp, but it's not necessary if you have a somewhat cool name like John Cena.

Some people have both cool gimmick names and cool real names: Kevin "Diesel" Nash, Scott "Razor Ramon" Hall, and Sean "Syxx" Waltman come to mind.

A important reason for this would also be, it makes them more "Human". Dumping the cheesy nicknames like Doink and Kamala or whatever and using names like Brock Lesnar or Chuck Palumbo or fake names like Billy Gunn or Shawn Michaels humanizes them.

The same thing happened in Baseball, there are no more Pee Wee's or Goose...just Jack Smiths.

I'm a fan of plain names, but not PLAIN names. Shawn Michaels yes, Harry Ronaldford, no. Having 'The dominator' as your top draw just feeds up hte stereotypical image that wrestling has.
