Upside Down American Flag

I'm not sure how I feel about the "UnAmericans" carrying around an upside-down American flag. I'm not particularly touchy, but I was offended when in January the stupid fans keps chanting "What?" during the Star Spangled Banner.

But to pose a question...

Was it necessary to carry around an upside down American flag, which has become a symbol for anarchy, and potentially very offensive to a lot of people, when carrying around a Canadian flag probably would have generate the same heat?

The upside-down flag was an unspeakably cool touch. Besides, it was only 10 years ago when the Marines flew our flag upside down at the World Series, so touche.

Asking this question to someone who blatantly has an upside down American flag on his car with the inscription "DOG BLESS AMERICA" (I turned God upside down as well) in the middle of white suburbia... Nah, it's not bad at all. I thought it was pretty cool actually.

I didn't give a shit. Besides, they had to get Test some heat SOMEHOW.

As someone who's both an American and a proud member of the Canadian Alliance, I don't think it was disrepectful at all. The entire gimmick is based around their dislike of America(ns) so they need to do something derogatory to America but they also have to make sure that they don't go far. So, they can't burn/urinate on/destroy an American flag. Waiving it upside down is a sign of disrespect that doesn't actually push the envelope too far.

No more disrespectful then that balding idiot "HBK" taking cheap shots at Bret while he's still laying in a hospital bed with his left side of his body still pretty much paralyzed.

I don't think they could have carried a Canadian flag because they're the Un-Americans. They're trying to promote there hatred for America, not there love for Canada. I thought the upside down flag was approriate, it was just there to gain more heat and it was pretty cool.

meh...its like the US Woman's Hockey team stomping on our Canadian flag before the Gold Medal Game...

but like that didn't really matter since who won thats right us Canadians :)

It's a wrestling angle. Get over it.

if they want the gropu to be an Anti-America faction, it's appropriate for the upside down flag.

If they want them to be pro canadian, whip out the bars and leaf.

Personally, it isn't offensive to have an upside down US flag. Rage against the machine had one on their SNL appearance, and American records (of Slayer, System of a Down, and many others fame) has thei logo as the upside down american flag.

No biggy. It's not like they were burning it or deficating on it on TV.

Who cares? There are only a handful of decent states in this country anyway: California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and maybe Maryland.

For the most part, the United States is comprised of hellholes such as New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Washington D.C., etc.

And then there are the states that just don't matter, like Montana and Idaho.

 I'm from NY!!!!!!

Wait! I'm from Upstate, Ny. I'm practically Canadian anyway!

Take it to NHB...

(And I'm not just saying that because I'm from NJ and work in NY...)

HEY HEY HEY HEY! New York a hellhole? South Fucking Carolina a good state? Damned backwards.

As for the upside down flag, I guess, in THEORY, it would have gotten Test heat. Some things just don't work out.

Ok... Well before I get flamed... I didn't say I was offended by it. Just trying to start a conversation.

I think the entire angle has already been done and is pretty sad anyway.

With that said, I don't have a problem with it. An upside-down flag actually stands for a nation in distress (ala a 9/11 attack or something.) I figure as long as they don't burn it, hey, whatever.

Hell, I could deal with Rage burning a flag. Wish they get back together and do something.

Jesus Christ, do American's get offended by everything???

Damn, if I got offended by stuff like that then i'd be complaining about nearly every American film (Titanic for example) being anti-British. And anyway, remember when all you American's were cheering HBK for wiping his nose on the Canadian Flag?

Anyway, at least most of you didn't seem offended by it.

Anyone offended by an upside down American Flag on a wrestling show either:

A) Doesn't understand what the upside down is supposed to indicate (the WWE probably figured -- likely correctly -- that most of its audience was too ignorant of proper Flag Flying Protocol and wouldn't "get it" and hence Lance Storm had to basically Explain The Joke). [[by the way, that's the only problem I really have with the upside down flag; most people in attendance probably didn't get it. It's amazing that for all the stink so many people make about the flag, so few of those people actually know anything about how to fly it; it's supposed to be either illuminated or taken down at night, and if it becomes tattered by, say, being whipped around in the wind as your "flag on the antenna" car zooms by, it is supposed to be taken down and replaced, NOT left up to fly around and be shabby. Idiots just need to find something to be pissed off about and offended about to prove their 'patriotism' and don't really understand anything about what they're really getting worked up about.]]

B. People just need to get a thicker skin. I mean, it's just a wrestling angle, and also, THE FLAG IS JUST A PIECE OF CLOTH. It's the finger that points to the moon (American freedom/values/government, etc), not the moon itself.

Now, here's why I liked the upside down American Flag:

It was something never done before on a wrestling program, or at least not since I became a fan. A canadian flag would've been obvious and pedestrian. And besides, though the group is All-Canadian at this point, they are supposed to represent all non-Americans everywhere (at least that seems to be how they are booked to see themselves). Plus, you know, after Lance Storm explained what the upside down flag means, the fans could come away knowing something they didn't know before.

Unique, Entertaining, "shocking" (in its newness and it's "offensiveness) and it was, like, sorta educational, too. :D Socially Responsible Television from Vince McMahon? I think the temperature in Hell is dropping rapidly...

Storm dissing the Duke was over the line. The upside down flag was just cheap heat.

The upside down American flag was good storyline-wise. It's a way for the Un-Americans to disgrace the flag in a way without actually having to disgrace it (it's better flying it upside down for cheap heat than burning it or pissing on it and probably causing a riot).

I thought the Ted Williams comment was almost over the line myself.

Actually the only offensive part of the segment was HBK's Bret Hart comments. Way to go, HBK. You could have pointed out how they were abusing one of America's strengths (freedom of speech, as JR kept pointing out) but I guess it's fun to mention how you helped ruin the career of one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Karma's a bitch, Shawn.

As for the Un-American angle, they're doing a great job of pissing everyone off, but it will be sweet to watch them get their just desserts in the ring.
