Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 This is taken from Jay Bower's "Smarks News Central" at www.411wrestling.com. It's from a section where he praises the WWE for how well it's pushed the 'young guns and not let the TV be crowded by "tiresome veterans". Now, to me, bullshit like that is a sucker-punch, but this is spitting on the man while he's lying motionless: 4) John Cena: Ever since this young man first laced his boots and trained out west in Ultimate Pro Wrestling, many "insiders" (who are normally very pale...get it, "inside"rs? Eh) have pegged him as a future superstar in our sport. While I wouldn't consider myself an insider by any means, I feel as though John Cena has ever tool needed to make a huge impact in the future of professional wrestling. The handsome young man (yes, I said that) has a great, crisp moveset, natural charisma and a unique promo style that sticks out like a sore thumb when compared to 90% of the other WWE superstars. Anyone jumping immediately out of the gate calling him vanilla, boring or bad on the mic really would be doing themselves a service by checking out some old OVW footage, because John Cena is absolutely gold on the microphone when he is scripted to say the right thing and more than capable of a ****+ match. If I had to choose one, I would probably call John Cena my favorite rookie within World Wrestling Entertainment and I am looking forward to seeing where the road leads this young competitor. Rating: 7.5 Thoughts?
Guest Anglesault Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 PSST. Insulting Jay Bower doesn't go over well here.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 None of them have shown me anything yet.
Guest The Czech Republic Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Hey! Jay Bower kicks multiple kinds of ass. Lay off you loser.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I like his columns, but that bugged the HELL outta me. Hey, everyone fucks up, right?
Guest chirs3 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 He didn't say anything wrong. It's called an opinion. I think John Cena is a boring sack of shit who will just end up being, at best, a transitional IC champ. But I'm not gonna flame Bower because he thinks Cena could maybe make it big someday.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I didn't flame him, I said that I thought his opinion was bullshit. That's MY opinion.
Guest chirs3 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Well, the title is "Pure Bullshit". Sort of had a hateful tone. Guess I misunderstood.
Guest TestKick Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Dude, you seem to like putting people down for having opinions different from yours... Anyway, I do think Cena has the potential to be a big star. He definitely has the look, but he needs major, major work on his speaking skills, and has a while to go before he's putting on **** matches.
Guest BigTim2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Ummmmm...I bet they give him the Sting push... So help us God if he doesn't get some actual charisma. Or a move that doesn't looks so GOD DAMN Contrived...
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Well, when you guys flame JR for putting over Bradshaw and Bull Buchanan that's fine. But heaven forbid I should by angry at the great Jay Bower for practically fellating Cena, a worker who so far has NO fans on this board, that's just awful Mighty hypocritcal if you ask me.
Guest ShooterJay Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I'm going to make another bet, which unfortunately no one will remember. John Cena will be a World Champion by 2004, and he's going to prove you all wrong. (It's not much of a stretch, watch some Prototype, you rakehells and hoydens!) -The above was a Mike Nelson joke, which no one will probably get- Anyway, in all serious, Bower is right, Cena is money in the bank, he just hasn't shown it yet. Remember, the Shooter called it.
Guest chirs3 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I never flame JR! JR rules! Sorry Zasz, its just naming a topic "Pure Bullshit" sounds a lot like flaming. Why didn't you just say "I, for one, think Jay Bower is full of shit. What about you guys?" or anything like that?
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Sorry Zasz, its just naming a topic "Pure Bullshit" sounds a lot like flaming. Why didn't you just say "I, for one, think Jay Bower is full of shit. What about you guys?" or anything like that? Cause that wouldn't fit on the topic line
Guest chirs3 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I meant in the post, smartass. But yea... I really don't get what people see in Cena... I haven't seen the OVW stuff, so I'm not the definitive Cena-man, but making bad Test jokes and being put over as a rookie will only get you so much farther than Randy Orton...
Guest bob_barron Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 John Cena sucks- I just hate him with a passion
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Yeah, I mean say what you will about OVW. Right now, he's bland as shit. And this great promo style, has escaped us all. Except Jay Bower, of course. That's just my opinion.
Guest BigTim2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I think that if Cena is developed correctly, he'd rule all joo with a muthafuckin vengeance...but then...this IS the WWE we're talking about. They can't build BROCK FUCKING LESNAR into a monster heel for god sakes.
Guest RickyChosyu Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Bower is a goof. No point getting worked up about something silly coming from him. I mildly enjoy his humor, but I avoid his serious opinions on wrestling, just because I find them to be complete and utter balderdash. At the same time, I actually agree with him here, to an extent. Cena has shown some nifty ring pressence that I enjoy, and if he takes advantage of the talent around him and fills in the gaps in his work, he could enter the realm of good workers.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Big Tim: Same with OVW. I know how much potential he has, but that ain't doing shit for him now.
Guest AndrewTS Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I'm going to make another bet, which unfortunately no one will remember. Remember, the Shooter called it. I probably would had I not realized MST3K was being shown on Sci-Fi just last week. Unless you just meant his stand up act, then probably not. So, at what point between now and 2004 is HHH gonna lose his stroke or retire? Getting back to the topic, Cena was just totally overrated there, but remember that the actual Sting stunk it up for a while in the Bladerunners--of course, Warrior WAS his tag partner. Cena has potential, but so far hadn't done anything to really stand out for me.
Guest LJSexay Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I actually comepletly agree with Jay, aside from him being my friend and all, because we've always had a strange indetical taste in wrestling. I don't think it matters whether people agree or not, because really, the only opinion people should accept is the one that makes most sense to THEM, and this means not taking anyone, not even net journalists', opnions as fact. Same for SK. wo0o0o
Guest El Psycho Diablo Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 The difference between Bower and JR.. Bower's just an internet columnist. There are lots of those. JR works for the WWE, is in a high position, and is able to get his "boys" pushes. JR's infinitely worse, that's why he gets flamed.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 JR's infinitely worse, that's why he gets flamed. Then explain Tommy Fierro. =b
Guest El Psycho Diablo Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Well.. You don't necessarily have to read an internet column. You can avoid them if they're bad.. However, the product you watch on TV..it's almost impossible to avoid Ross' influence.
Guest imajackoff? Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 The bland John Cena character would be an albatross around anyone's neck. The little I saw of the Prototype character seemed to be tailor made for the WWF (I'll never say E). I wonder if the WWF's trepidation in using this character is that it they didnt create it, and thus would lose out on the copyright $$$.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I wonder if the WWF's trepidation in using this character is that it they didnt create it, and thus would lose out on the copyright $$$. WWF didn't make Tazz. Mick Foley thought up Dude Love, but WWF made plenty of money on that, too. Marvel Comics owns the copyrights to Hulk Hogan still. Profit ++. No. I don't think copyrights have anything to do with it. I think it's that, as we've seen, Cena's acting skills are way below his ring skills. It'd be easier to let him join the ranks of the WWF guys who are playing exxagerated caricatures of themselves with their own names, rather than trying to act like a gimmick or cartoon character.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 I don't mind Cena, as bland as he may be. I'd rather see Cena, or Orton, or Batista..than Rikishi, Henry, or Albert. At least it shows they have some intention to bring in a new guy not named "Brock". I'll take a small guy push over a hoss push anyday. Especially when that hoss has shown no real wrestling ability, character, or reasons why he deserves a world title reign.
Guest EI Cubano Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Ha, the guy who called me a "goof" and "balderish" just completely made my day, thanks man Thanks for the defense guys, I appreciate it as always and you know you are more than welcome to disagree or agree with anything I may say. Anyway, a somewhat decent column can start debate and quality discussion so I'm happy that 28 posts later in I can chime in. My opinions on Cena are just that, my own opinions. Again, Cena has shown only a small amount of his potential in WWE so far as he still seems a little blown away by actually being on WWE television and making the big time. If you really want to, track down some UPW/OVW footage and then try and call Cena a horrible mic worker based on one silly promo that he didnt write involving Test and a woodchuck. The rookie has charisma, he's fluid in the ring and is doing just fine for a guy who has barely been in the spotlight for 2 months. Look at the Rock two months into his WWE babyface rookie run, Cena looks ten times better than him and look where the Rock is now. I personally think that WWE is doing very well with the push and development of Cena, if you don't than I'm not going to come to your home with a tank, forty grenade throwing monkeys and a hypnotist to force you into believing that Cena has potential. I guess time will tell if Cena really does have what it takes.
