Kurt angle leaving wwf for 2+ years?!

There is an article in this week's Sports Illustrated about professional wrestlers crossing over from other sports.  Thanks to Guy C. White for sending along the following:

The article is basically about Kurt Angle and his crossover from amateur wrestling to professional wrestling. It also mentions Brock Lesnar, The Rock, and Stone Cold.

The most interesting thing mentioned however is this: "The WWF has already approved a two-year hiatus for Angle to train for the 2004 Olympics. He pegs his odds of making it at 50 - 50."

First the Rock, than Angle. That's their big guns, their cross-appeal stars. They could be setting themselves up for a big fall.

why would he give up the money and fame to go back to olympic training...especially since he's proven his salt in the amateur circles already?

It could only serve to hurt his WWF career.

Don't forget, they have Hogan to carry the whole promotion now. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ;)

I don't see Hogan there long enough to do any serious damage. Maybe a two-month reign, put over Jericho, set up a feud, do the big job, and he's out. I'm serious.

The quote is from Sports Illustrated magazine. It isn't from 1wrestling.com. Sports Illustrated doesn't post bullshit news.

I really hope Angle doesn't go, he's my favorite at the time.  Plus, if he doesn't win, he'll look weak.  Really not a smart move.

I can see the logic here. They refuse to push Angle, so what's wrong with him doing something else in the mean time? If he WINS they will have NO bullshit excuse as to make him midcard fodder when he gets back.

You realize by then it'll  be two years from now, and he may not feel the need to come back.

Kurt Angle recently resigned with the WWF for 5 years, so he will still have 3 years left on his contract after coming back from the Olympics.

WWF's loss. I'm sure if they were you know...doing somethign with him, he may not leave in the first place. Right now he is spinning his wheels.

Hey, if Angle does leave, do you think they will finally push Test in his place?

As of right now, I would love to have Kurt Angle stay in the WWF, because Vince will indefinitely need him in the years to come, but I am also going to be present at the 2004 Olympic Games, and I wouldn't mind seeing Angle compete in real wrestling.  It'll be interesting to see.  From a WWF standpoint, it's going to hurt his career.  From an Olmypic and Media standpoint, if he goes and he wins a medal in amateur wrestling, it'll help his career both ways, since he'll be a two-time Olympic medalist.....

I think he is risking a lot if he plans on going for Olympics.  He could get seriously injured, he could not make the cut and be embarrassed or he could lose in the Olympics and ruin his gimmick as teh best wrestler in the world.  Plus I don't want to him to be off for that long.

Angle's loss. He'll never make back the money in ad, sales, and house show thatt he'll lose. Especially if the opportuniy doesn't work out; what'll he have to fall back on? He's better off being wasted and cashing in on what he makes working, rather than training if nothing comes of it. And it's not like he's going to be sitting in the mid-card forever, because Rock and Hogan are both question marks, and Undertaker's time is coming. And what are the odds he'll beat someone younger and stronger than him. And he's years past his competitive days. Good luck to Angle, but he's blowing a sure thing.

If he goes to the olympics and wins, maybe he'll get some cool skits like Mark Henry does.

I agree. If he wins, the WWF would promote it NON stop. But I don't think I'm ready for 2 whole years without one of the only two wrestlers I really enjoy watching these days... *sob*

Like I said Angle might be (And should be) fed up. There is no reason for him to be midcard fodder right now. He might see opportunity if he elaves and comes back, ESPECIALLY if he wins. Not even The Dynamic Booking Duo could depush a double gold medalist.

And it's not like he's going to be sitting in the mid-card forever,

From the looks of it, he will probably be in the midcard until the End of the year (at the least) So if they aren't doing anything productive with him, why not let him leave?

If he goes to the olympics and wins, maybe he'll get some cool skits like Mark Henry does.

Or if he stays, maybe he can be the BUTT of really bad comedy and get Speared in tag matches featuring Albert.

They don't have anything planned for him anyway, so what difference does it make?

Angle already has TWO gold medals.  If he wins three...wow, he would receive a MONSTER push when he returned.  Angle is a smart man.

Until he gets to over Triple H put an end to that push.

This WONT happen. Kurt Angle has taken steriods in the past and if he gets caught with them in the Olympics, that would be the humuliation of a life time for the WWF. This won't happen.

Well if he does end up leaving, this will really really suck. I'm not even a big Angle fan, but I do recognize his ability to almost always put on the best match on any show he wrestles on, and he always keeps me entertained whether it is through in ring promos or backstage skits. I definitely hope he reconsiders.

Tell that to Vince and the Demon Couple.
