Guest Goodear Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 I don't know why someone would go from making whole loads of money to making a whole lot of nothing. But thats why I'm not an Olympic athlete. Well, that and I don't have an once of ability to do anything sporty this side of Ms. PacMan. Anyway, Angle will hurt his career by taking the two years off. Fans have short memories. You don't hear a whole lot of clamoring for Shamrock or Goldberg now that its been a few years since they've been gone do you? New stars will be made and Kurt will be left on the side of the road.
Guest El Satanico Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Well i'm sure this wasn't all Angle coming up to Vince and saying i'd love to kill myself for two years for another medal to go with my two. I'm sure Vince had something to do with his decision to think about going out for olympics. We all know how much Vince loves anything that puts WWF into the mainstream. By 2004 wrestling will be back to a low point and Vince knows that something like this may be something they really need by that time. But it could turn around to hurt them if the Olympic Commitee refused to allow him to compete for a spot because of him being in WWF. They could find an excuse if they wanted to. Hell all they would have to do is bring up him still being under contract(even if they did give him a leave) with WWF while competing. And imagine the mess it will make if Angle tests for traces of steroids when WWF and Angle were sure that he had got them all out of his system. The feds would come down even harder on Vince if he got tangled up in another steroid scandal.
Guest The Man in Blak Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Like I said Angle might be (And should be) fed up. There is no reason for him to be midcard fodder right now. He might see opportunity if he elaves and comes back, ESPECIALLY if he wins. Not even The Dynamic Booking Duo could depush a double gold medalist. Next thing you know, you'll be telling us that if you play a track of Angle's Smackdown promo backwards while standing on your head, you'll hear the message: "Pin me now, spear man" Edit: Just 'cause I can.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Since when did kurt win a second gold medal?
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 He didnt. He would have to wrestle in 2 weight classes back to back and that's simply impossible. He showed up in the WWF w/four or five fake medals. Let him leave, i could care less.
Guest Ace309 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 I believe Kurt's second medal is, theoretically, his World Championship from... I think, 1995. Kurt would have to go either 211 pounds or 264. At 211, he has to deal with Cael Sanderson (if he moves up), Chad Lamer and several other athletes who have been practicing freestyle either exclusively or in combination with folkstyle for the past several years. Plus, I don't think Kurt could cut the weight. Trust me, this is coming from another heavyweight wrestler... he has too much muscle. I'd peg him at about 250 right now. At 264, he'd have to contend with Kerry McCoy (5th in the world on multiple occasions), Steve Mocco (one of the best untested youngsters in the country), Tommy Rowlands (dark horse) and several other athletes. His best chance would be at 211, assuming Sanderson stays at 185. I don't think he'd make it out of the country, much less win the Games again.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 At 211, he has to deal with Cael Sanderson (if he moves up), Chad Lamer and several other athletes who have been practicing freestyle either exclusively or in combination with folkstyle for the past several years. I don't have much to say just that Chad LAmer is a funny name. This WONT happen. Kurt Angle has taken steriods in the past and if he gets caught with them in the Olympics, that would be the humuliation of a life time for the WWF. This won't happen. How do you know for a fact?
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 And the feud is continuing. Dude... either get over it, or go kill yourself <== sarcasm Anyway, I don't think Vince pressured Angle to go to the Olympics. This was Angle's idea, and it's his passion. I think he just wants to prove to himself that he can do it again. I think it's cool. Sure, I'll miss him, but if this is what he wants, then great... and about the money he'll be losing... Angle's already financially secure and even more so. Besides, sometimes money isn't everything
Guest muswp1 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 They only reason why Kurt is in the mid-card is because he's in the wrong brand right now. If Angle wants to get back in the world title hunt, he should do everything in his power to get over to RAW. RAW has no top talent except for Austin and Undertaker while Smackdown has practically everyone else. How else do you explain Bradshaw in the main event picture almost every week. Besides with Hogan in the mix now, Angle has no chance at all to win the title until someone puts a gun to Hogan's head and makes him job the belt. If Kurt wants to try to go to the Olympics again, he should. 2004 could be his last chance to ever try to win another medal. By 2008, he will definately be too old to compete. I honestly don't think he will be gone two years, but he should at least try to win another medal.
Guest Human Fly Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 In a way I blame the WWF if this happens. If he wins another gold medal, then whose to say he will come back. If he does, sure he'll be insanely over, but I don't care if he's insanely over it wouldn't be worth losing him for 2 years. If I was the WWF and this is serious I would have Angle come out at the ppv and make whoever is champ tap out. There are hardly any superstars who I would keep over Kurt Angle. Think about it, can anyone name more then 5 (if even that many) who are more valuable to the WWF then Angle. Another thing, what if Angle doesn't win the Gold. What if he wins the bronze, pulls a Mark Henry, or as someone mentioned earlier he doesn't even make it to the olympics. How do you re-introduce him then? "Hey here comes Kurt Angle, he was gone for two years training for the Olympics only to get squashed before even getting there".
Guest Smeghead Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Angle taking a two-year hiatus to train for and compete in the 2004 Olympics has nothing--I repeat--NOTHING to do with him being stuck in midcard land. Angle didn't just wake up this morning and decide to go for gold again so he could get away from Edge. He made this decision quite some time ago. I distinctly remember them mentioning this on WWF.com early last year. And he was the World Champion at that time. Not exactly midcard, eh? The WWF had already approved of giving him two years off to train around that time as well. Rumor killing over. On with the commentary: I do agree that it kinda sucks. Angle is one of my favorites, and I don't think I could get used to not having him on my TV for two years. But if I had another chance at an Olympic medal, I'd probably do the same thing. So if he wants to go for it, more power to him.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 If Angle left the WWF today and was never seen on television again I don't think it would make a huge difference except for the small group of Angle marks. That's why Benoit's absence hasn't been any big deal except for the marks that miss him.
Guest Mystery Eskimo Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Angle didn't just wake up this morning and decide to go for gold again so he could get away from Edge. Hell, I would.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 and about the money he'll be losing... Angle's already financially secure and even more so. Besides, sometimes money isn't everything Are you his accountant? Lordy, I can see it now. Angle and Edge can't take it any longer. The WWF isn't big enough for the two of them. Retirement Match. Edge goes over clean and Angle disappears for 2 years. bLeH. God Help Us.
Guest buffybeast Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 I'll believe this preposterous rumor when it comes to fruition. I just don't believe this one bit. The WWF would be foolish to allow one of their most prized commodities to take two frickin' years off to chase a dream. Angle is in his 30s and is past his prime in competitive sports. The odds of him winning a gold medal again are small, I'm sure. anything less than gold would tarnish his name value in WWF.
Guest JHawk Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 My thought though: Wrestling is one of the few Olympic sports where you still need amateur status to compete. Do they have some sort of policy for professionals regaining amateur status? It could be a moot point whether he's allowed to leave or not. Plus, he just signed a five-year extension, which theoretically means he'd still be considered a professional whether he was active or not. He may not be eligible for an Olympic run.
Guest humongous2002 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 That completely sucks!!!!!The only reason I watched Smackdown was b/c of Angle and Y2J. What is Angle trying to prove? Everybody knows he is a legit tough-guy. All I got to say it's one word.......SHAMROCK.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Are you his accountant? Well hmmm, let's see... according to the observer, he signed a five year contract with the WWF that garentees a 7 figure sum. If you don't want to call that financially secure... I don't think Angle going to the Olympics is about trying to prove to everyone that he's a tough guy. If it's his passion and what drives him, then more power to him. He writes in his book about how his heart and passion will always remain with amateur wrestling. He probably wants to prove to HIMSELF that he can still do it. Plus, for all of you non believers that he might do this... read his book. He talks about the possibility there
Guest Brian Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 The guarantee is only if he works house shows and does minimal merchandise. The only people who earn base pay of seven figure are Austin and Mark Henry. Maybe the Rock does but because he work fewer dates than everyone else his base may be lower, and he just may be working on a per date. And when you're putting in large amounts of money in training, plus losing money that should be guaranteed, you're not going to be secure. Nothing is secure until it's in your hands or in the bank.
Guest Jericholic82 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 btw kurt only won 1 olympic gold medal. the others are from national championships I think. He shouldn't go. But what do the writers do, hes done so much already, what else do you do with him. he did in 3 years what takes whole careers to do with others. Hes too good for the lowcard and midcard, too big for the semi main, and even too big for the main, where do you put him? I say put him on RAW, they need a good solid top heel who can actually wrestle. please dont go kurt
Guest Just call me Dan Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Oh you thing he's getting buried NOW? If Kurt Angle LOST in the Olympics, at any time, he would come back tarnished and probably without a lot of his spark. It is really too risky for him to do because if he screws it up, he's done in the WWF. Vince would have them all run over him. He would be Hogan's little bitch if he was still around.

The Rock works less dates? Only because of the Hollywood stuff or he just normally works less? And doesn't big show make a million a year? And what about Hunter? Also I'm sure Austin and Rock would have the biggest base pays in the WWF.
Guest Brian Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Rock might be because I remember him getting a new guarantee about two summers ago or so. I'm pretty sure Rock just has more outside commitments than everyone else, and not just the acting. I forget what Big Show signed for, but I'm sure his stint in OVE hurt it. Then again, he did have a high downside. But the WWF still isn't prone to giving out large contracts, they like to lace up the incentives, and angle's been talking about doing the Olmpics for about half a year and I'd doubt they'd resign him to that high, keep his program with Edge, and then send him to work towards his goal.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Remember a guy by the name of Big Show? Yeah he gets paid seven figures too and will be for a while now unlesss he's affected by the pay cut Kurt Angle's contract supposedly garentees him an incredible amount of money while he trains for the olympics. Just curious... do ANY of you guys read the observer?
Guest WWF4Life Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Big Show's downside is apparently $1 million per annum, regardless of his position on the card. Kurt just signed a new contract, so I would imagine it's at least the same. I'll believe it when I see it. That said, I think the WWF could find a way to benefit from Kurt's inclusion in the 2004 games, if he makes them. If he wins, then it writes itself, he could be a huge face or heel. If he doesn't win, the WWF could have him as the whining, pissed off heel, getting ribbed by all the guys for losing. The only thing is, the WWF would really miss Angle if he went for 2 years. Heck, they'd miss him if he went for 2 months.
Guest Brian Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 And what if he doesn't qualify? A year and a half down the tube.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Kurt Angle's contract supposedly garentees him an incredible amount of money while he trains for the olympics. Wow. This has been talked about before? That's getting really bad. If Kurt leaves for 2 years, his character will be practically dead by the time he returns. People knew who HHH was 8 months later because he left as the top heel in the promotion. Guys like Kurt who get the majority of their heat from promos just can't stay alive in people's minds that long.
Guest Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Assuming he makes it to the Olympics, the WWF will most likely cover it, showing footage of him throughout to keep the fans refreshed in memory. And lets assume for a moment that he gets another gold medal (I think some of you would be quite surprised at how good Kurt Angle still is and how good he will be with two years of intense physical training) then it will of course be shown on WWF tv and Angle can come back either as a real hero, or they can push him as a heel again with the "ha! I told you I could do it again" attitude. Plus it's great publicity for both Angle and the WWF.
