Guest Steve J. Rogers Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Anyone following the recent story about the fans who were not allowed to wear/sell shirts that said "Yankees Suck" in Seattle must know that the Mariners eventually let them do it due to the fact that the civil liberties union would have gotten involved and yadda yadda. Well this brought up an intresting disscussion on sports radio here in NYC today about fans wearing shirts, waving signs and chanting rude, obnoxious and offensive slogans and it surprised me that the one place that fosters that behavior more than any other was not mentioned, yup a wrestling event. Granted the majority of drunken a-holes at sporting events probably think Hulk Hogan is still the champ and fighting the Undertaker at the next big event (oh wait a minute...Ahh you know what I mean) if they even know about wrestling to begin with, but what the talk show hosts and callers were brining up was how that kind of boorish behavior should not be tolerated around youngsters (anywhere before mid-preteens, I guess 11-12 year olds) but no where was it mentioned that you see a good amount of kids at a wrestling event where fans are encouraged to; chant SUCKS at the hated heel, (Hell Kurt Angle's latest feud with Edge is almost based on the fans special serenade, not to mention the WHAT! added at the end) often will beg a valet to her "puppies", mimic various lewd gestures from the D-X crotch to Austin's double bird salute. And its not just wrestling, its in all points of the culture from what anyone can see on music videos (or hear on the CDs) to shows from South Park (don't ask why on earth a parent would allow their kid to watch, Stone and Parker DID NOT make this a kid show) to Seinfeld. Not to mention mainstream sports haven't exactly been projecting themselves in the "wholesome" image but also I think you have to factor the emergence of "in your face" X Games sports that are popular amonst the majority of those who probably buy most of the "(insert team) sucks" shirts And that ties wrestling back in. I mean yeah I know its too far gone to clean up but it is intresting when a character that would rather say "fricking heck" over "fucking hell" like Kurt Angle is considered a dorky, geeky heel while foul mouthed types like, well virtually face is someone to look up to. I don't know I just felt like ranting okay
Guest treble charged Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 I think the people in Seattle were just being uptight. I was at game 4 of the Toronto/Ottawa series on Wednesday night, and the local sports radio station was giving out shirts that said "Leafs Suck", there were even chants made up just for the Sens fans to yell, "Leafs Suck!". It was all in good fun, but personally, I feel that if your main reason to go to a game is to boo the opposing team, rather than cheer for the home team (I was cheering for Toronto, BTW), then that's just sad. Anyway, to tie this back into wrestling, there are a lot worse things that people can yell at people that they don't like, and "Sucks" is pretty harmless. I don't even think that most people think Angle sucks, they just like yelling it out with his music (like myself).
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 What suprises me is that it took Seatle this long to figure out what we in Boston have known all along. The Yankees do suck.
Guest Anglesault Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 What surpises me is that it will take the people in Boston and Seattle till October to realize that they just CAN'T beat the Yankees.
Guest converge241 Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 What suprises me is that it took Seatle this long to figure out what we in Boston have known all along. The Yankees do suck. amen. ill be going along with that thurs 0523 in fenway! What surpises me is that it will take the people in Boston and Seattle till October to realize that they just CAN'T beat the Yankees. i cant speak for seattle, but what happened last series that the sox and yankees played? BEST RECORD IN MLB!!
Guest Anglesault Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 October is where it really matters. And somehow, some way, the Bosox and the Mariners manage to choke every year... Also, the Red Sox may have the best record, but you have to factor in the rain outs.
Guest El Satanico Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 The whole thing with Seattle trying ban "whatever" Sucks shirts and signs is so friggin stupid. I mean who honestly would care about people saying sucks? Never knew sucks is considered so offensive that it would bring upon a ban. It's not like they were saying "we are going to rape and kill your mothers then fly single engine planes into your homes killing your families". Something like that i could understand trying to ban it, but come on banning sucks...give me a break. You know they made such a big deal of it just because they directed sucks to New York. And Seattle officials can't have their resident's being "cruel" to New Yorkers post 9/11. More post 9/11 propaganda spreading...it's becoming unbearable.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 ::SG goes to get the paper:: Sox record: 23-7 Yanks Record: 20-14 Yanks have played 4 more games and lost twice as many as the Sox. Sox vs. the Al East: 17-5 (including 3-1 with the Yanks) Yanks vs. Al East: 14-8 Sox last 10 games: 9-1 Yanks last ten games: 5-5 What do the rain outs have to do with this? Consider that they were rained out against Tor, KC (already made up), and Tampa Bay, so they would most likely be 24-7 considering we have only lost once to Tor and haven't lost to Tampa.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 BTW the new shirt going around Fenway says "Yankees Suck" on the front and "Jeter Swallows" on the back. It hasn't been banned.
Guest converge241 Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 October is where it really matters. hey i know.. its more valid to go by now, instead of prognosticating into October based off of past events..cause you could say the yankees know all about choking at a higher level in october
Guest converge241 Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 What do the rain outs have to do with this? again, amen.. even if they lost those games, still in the lead those jeter shirts ..lol.. whats next?
Guest Anglesault Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 The rain outs won't change the lead over the Yankees, but it might effect the best record in Baseball. They've had those shirts in the Brox for a long time. Mets suck, Baltimore Blows, and I THINK Boston sucks.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 The rain outs won't change the lead over the Yankees, but it might effect the best record in Baseball. Yeah it would, in all likelyhood the Sox would be 2 games better. Which would give them a .781 winning % and a 7 game lead over the Yanks.
Guest Brian Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Just split the games, say they go five hundred which is the norm not factoring in schedule difficulty, injury, etc. Still best record.
Guest Special K Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Hey, Seattle's just a polite city. Except for when A-Rod comes back to play us. And Anglesault, whether or not the Sox will choke or not is debatable, but they are the best team in baseball right now, and there's no debating that. Plus, the M's choking once doesn't really give them a lable as chokers.
Guest Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Unless Abe "Knuckleball" Swartz is comming back to beat Hogan with a bat why are we talking about baseball?
Guest Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Hmm, I predict for the first time ever, the Red Sox will begin to decline when Pedro and NOMAHHHHH suffer injuries. Yes, my friends, I am an oracle. I can see things that no one else can.
Guest Anglesault Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Plus, the M's choking once doesn't really give them a lable as chokers. Every year since about 95 I'd say, the Mariners become an increasingly better team. Unfortunately, every year it all leads up to nothing.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 I always like it when the WWE goes to New York and some wrestler like Christian goes for the cheap heat (with a Diamondbacks jersey or something) and it only gets a mixed response, because half the crowd is chanting Yankees and the other half is chanting Yankees Suck (Mets fans, of course).
Guest Brian Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 We're not a polite city. We're not even really a baseball city. The bandwagon swings by my neighborhood around six and 90% of the people get on. The others either don't care or are the real fans who hate going to the ballpark with a bunch of rubes. That's why I can't wait until the Mariners start losing every year. Finally, I'll be able to get tickets again.
Guest Special K Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 We're not a polite city? Have you been to other major cities? Seattle pretty damn polite. And I've always been an M's and Huskies fan. Never cared about the Sonics since I only like watching college basketball, and The seahawks have always been incredibly lame. It's true that Seattle isn't that much of a baseball town though.
Guest Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Chanting and audience participation is part of the culture of the WWF. What's more, they always spin it as free speech-type stuff...just think back to the RtC stuff. JR always going "We encourage you fans to express your minds, and bring signs, but don't censor people like Steven Richards is doing...". I wonder what would happen if people actually protested the audience chants...how would the WWF react? My favorite chant had to be "Stephanie Swallows *clap clap clapclapclap*".
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 You are assuming they win those games Yes I am because the games are against Tampa Bay and Toronto, the 2 worst teams in the division.. Sorry about the MLB talk in the WWF folder.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 It's good to see Anglesault getting right in here. Nobody can beat the Yankees.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 It's good to see Anglesault getting right in here. Nobody can beat the Yankees. Uh..... What about the Diamondbacks in the WS and their 14 losses this year?
Guest treble charged Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 Yes I am because the games are against Tampa Bay and Toronto, the 2 worst teams in the division.. Sorry about the MLB talk in the WWF folder. Yes, please don't bring your Jay bashing to the wrestling folders. I would really appreciate that.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 That's not "Jay Bashing" its true. Look at the standings.
Guest treble charged Posted May 9, 2002 Report Posted May 9, 2002 That's not "Jay Bashing" its true. Look at the standings. I prefer not to look at the standings, as I'm sure you can understand.
Guest Some Guy Posted May 10, 2002 Report Posted May 10, 2002 Yes I can, look at what happened in Boston last year. The Jays do have some decent young talent that unfortunately have to learn the game in the big leagues rather than in AAA due to rebuilding.
