When I first started buying DVDs Widescreen did annoy me quite a bit, but by now it's just normal and doesn't really matter.

Widescreen because I like to put the subtitles on and it doesn't interfere with the picture.

Thank you, DVD, for giving the widescreen format wider popularity. I worked at a Blockbuster for a time back in '97, and I wanted to strangle any person who said "I don't like letterbox cuz I want to see the whole movie." Man, I hated that fucking place.

Widescreen in general, it's a pain to watch the picture pan back & forth, but sometimes it really doesn't matter. Some movies are shot with an aspect ratio so close to that of a normal TV screen that there's basically no change. And some directors (Stanley Kubrick and Woody Allen, among others) often frame their shots with fullscreen in mind, and sometimes you're actually seeing more in the fullscreen version than in widescreen. (Whenever you catch a glimpse of a boom mike on home video, nine times out of ten that's the reason why.)

Um. It really sucks doing widescreen on my computer's 15 in. monitor, but I like it on the 25 in. tv. Im betting that 25 in. is about the smallest tv that widescreen will look good on.

 

I think they should go back to giving you 1 side with the widescreen and 1 side with standard pan and scan.

I've got no problems with watching widescreen on my 19-inch TV. I used to notice the difference between widescreen but still liked it better because now it looked more "natural". Now I don't even notice it.

 

The only stuff that I'll "excuse" watching in full-screen is shot on video and/or TV stuff, because (especially for TV) that's their only option.

I think they should go back to giving you 1 side with the widescreen and 1 side with standard pan and scan.

I didn't like this because I'm extremely careful with my DVDs like I am with my CDs, and if there's a double-sided DVD, I'll get REALLY paranoid about scratches, especially since they'd usually put the widescreen on "Side B", which is the side that's more likely to get scratched when handling.

Angel is in widescreen, and Joss Whedon wanted Firefly to be so, too, but Fox didn't think people would want that. I know are a few other shows in widescreen... but can't think of 'em at the moment.

I want to see what the director intended. For most movies that means widescreen, but some older stuff (ex. Citizen Kane) were shot in fullscreen. Pan & Scan is a travesty.

Most of the movies in the 40s and before were all 1.33:1 before television had the same aspect ratio and theatres tried to get more people to go to the movies so they had a wider aspect ratio.

Enterprise is also in widescreen.

 

Fox are idiots. Why wouldn't people want it, especially in a show that, if successful, will likely end up on DVD? Angel looks awesome in widescreen because of its somewhat cinematic feel.

i just can's stand pan & scan movies....and whenever i heard someone say something like "widescreen sucks, they cut the top and bottom of the screen" or something like that i try to expalin to them why it's the correct way and everythin but there are some people that simply don't understand and all i want a those cases is to shoot them....

Yeah it's funny to read some DVD-o-phile's who don't know what they're talking about complain when a film like Casablanca or Gone with the Wind isn't available in widescreen

Widescreen all the way. When my mom visited a few months ago I popped in Crimson Tide and she said "Oh, this has the black bars on it?"
