I think it depends on the lubrication used. Thai oil, which Guillard supposedly used against Huerta, is supposed to be effective in small doses. Don't know about vaseline, though.

GSP greasing in this fight wouldn't have changed the outcome much, seeing as how he outstruck BJ, has better wrestling, and BJ has never been great from his back. On the other hand, I don't think this and the previous accusations of greasing (if actually stated) should be disregarded as wholly unimportant.

I doubt it'll be a lucky shot if it happens. Like I've said before, Pellegrino is the type of guy who can peter out when a fight starts turning on him, and being hard to finish, I can imagine Emerson frustrating him to the point where he gives up like he did against Fickett. However, Emerson is often more than willing to simply go with the flow of a fight, rarely taking the initiative and mostly reacting to what his opponent does, which almost assures Pellegrino will stay in the driver's seat for all 3 rounds. -

Pellegrino's a massive front-runner, but Emerson just isn't good. -

Man, your K-1 senses must be dulling. I'd forgotten about the Andy posts until you just got to them. Then again, I'm a barely-working piece of shit. -
Is it wrong that I'm amused by the idea of Greg Jackson being the Eddie Harris of MMA? [Looking at his chest] Crisco. [wiping across his head] Bardol. [wiping along his waist line] Vagisil... Of course if the umps are watching me real close I'll rub a little jalapeno up my nose...

Tito Trinidad fucked Fernando Vargas' world up with a groin shot in their bout because he new he wouldn't get DQ'ed right away. Anyway, someone mentioned that GSP wasn't with Jackson's versus Sherk & Miller, so there may not be much correlation, unless GSP and/or Jackson's were doing it before teaming up.
-
Forgot that Sherk accused GSP, too. Anyway, Jackson has some good points about how hard it would take to get away with greasing... but that doesn't make it impossible to get away with it. It could also be argued that if you get away with it once, it's plausible to find a method of avoiding detection that works. Both Diaz & Karo are pretty batshit and accuse everyone of everything (Tito too, to some extent), so I can't give their claims too much credit by themselves. Someone like Florian or Sherk, though, I'd see as having little reason to make baseless claims
-
Huerta v. Florian is the only one I know of for sure, though now people have brought up previous accusations from Miller(v. GSP), Serra (v. GSP II) and Ortiz (v. Evans). Even if true, it's arguable if it had any bearing the way any of those fights turned out, but it's still a pretty big deal, especially if it turns out to be a common things for Jackson cornermen to do.
-
<Insert greasy Mexican joke here> ...and Roger Huerta said, "That's just the vaseline!" *rimshot*
-
Why's Dana acting all surprised? It's not like it's the first time someone for Jackson's has been accused of greasing.
-
Yes, it has, at least compared to almost every other division in MMA. There was never a point in MMA where someone with the skillsets of Tim Sylvia or Jeff Monson would ever sniff the Top 10 of any division other than HW.

I'm working on updating MSIA's list of best MMA fighters via birth country, but am stuck on Tonga. There HAS to have been some motherfucker from there that fought in Superbrawl at some point. -
Yes. If he needed any more evidence, he simply needs to watch a prime Ray Sefo get demolished by unknown heavyweight Chester "I Ain't No Steppin' Stone" Hughes in less than a minute.

I'd say a touch of Midol wouldn't hurt.

I depends on what you define as "wrestling." In the sense that a most people in MMA use the term, as an art that focuses primarily on techniques for taking an opponent to the ground and controlling them, then all of those but Sambo would probably fall into that category. Judo is a somewhat mixed bag, as due to the rules of international competition, many of the ground techniques that exist are de-emphasized.
-
-
It was my bad for not clarifying: the guy in question has long said that you can find most wrestling technique already in Judo (correct); thus, wrestling is theoretically useless (incorrect). The fact that Kim was hitting switches like Van Arsdale on speed was an example of a little-seen crossover in technique.
-
There is some truth to the fact that not a lot of people ever give thought to the fact that there is a LOT of crossover in techniques between different martial arts; the major variances in those arts tend to stem more from philosophy, rule sets, training, etc. I don't mean to imply that Kim has crap wrestling/judo/whatever (he's actually quite good, and would probably outwrestle all but the top level guys like GSP, Koscheck, Fitch). I just pointed it out because I find it amusing in being ultimately wrong, but not without some merit in thought. It's kind of like what Breen alludes to in his article at SD: there is still a prevailing thought process that everything that can work in MMA has already been discovered and applied to MMA, failing to take into account the dynamic nature of the sport and martial arts in general.
-
It was. Also on the subject of wrestling, I know of a certain judoka who isn't going to let anyone here the end of how Judo makes wrestling useless after all the switches Kim hit on Karo.

Jones has apparently made it his goal to hit more lateral drops & suplexes in his career than Shonie Carter.

It doesn't feel right to have a guy win a fight off three takedowns and a kimura attempt. It's times like this that I hate the 10 point system almost as much as PRIDE's lack judging criteria.
