Randy Couture signs new 3 fight contract with UFC
Lei Tong replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
I'm not seeing where the whole idea that Brock is some murderous puncher is coming from. Dropping/beating up on Herring isn't anything special, so I see no reason to beleive he's a bigger puncher than a prime Rizzo, who had trouble KO'ing Randy. That being said, Brock probably wins by simply being ridiculously bigger, which will be the deciding factor in the takedown exchanges (despite what everyone seems to think, the applicable wrestling skill probably goes to Randy, and he already beat a better wrestler in Kevin Randleman), allowing Brock to take advantage of Randy being a wrestler on his back before the reverse happens. And while Brock doesn't have more than even rudimentary ground and pound at his disposal on the mat, it's probably enough to wear Randy down before Brock gasses. Yes, Randy will probably land a good deal more standing, and Brock's eyes-closed response to Herring's flurry doesn't bode well against someone with heavier hands, but Randy simply isn't likely to have the power to hurt Brock significantly before Lesnar bull-rushes him to ground. -
Randy Couture signs new 3 fight contract with UFC

I have no qualms about the fight itself (and realize that other plans have been set in motion limiting current options), but the idea of Lesnar fighting for the HW title ahead of a Couture/Noguiera unification makes me throw up in my mouth a little. -
Well, that and he doesn't want to risk getting beaten by any legit opponent outside of PBF.
-
Seconded. Complete bitch move by De La Hoya, but it'll still garner massive hype.

A belated "Fuck you" to anyone who talks shit on the SgtMaj. Sixta rules.

Actually, this is the recovery period. I'm nowhere near as bad as I was the same time last year. Also, chances are Hioki finds a way to drop a JD. Flaky motherfucker. -
Ken Shamrock vs. Kimbo Slice on CBS
Lei Tong replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
I never claimed it was wrong. However, I'm entitled to my opinion, and my opinion is that people who readily lap this kind if crap up are retards. I don't care about EliteXC being a competitor with the UFC. Their roster is weak, matchmaking weaker, and utter reliance on a few names that I care little for leaves me apathetic about their survival. I'm not for the UFC being the only game in town, but that doesn't mean I'm going to blindly heap praise on a promotion that has done little to pique my interest. Only the interdependant survival of the several regional promotions ProElite has brought under their umbrella makes me hope for its continued existence. It doesn't matter to me who does or doesn't beat Kimbo. He can fuck off and never be seen again, for all I care. If he starts showing the potential to be a relevant HW, or begins fighting relevant HW's, I might cut him some slack. As I've already made clear, I don't watch MMA for the sake of seeing the ratings the next day; I watch MMA to see fights that entertain me. -
Ken Shamrock vs. Kimbo Slice on CBS

Addendum: I don't much like freak-show fights, which this one has all the makings of (bar fights are comparable, but more morbidly satisfying). I prefer fights between skilled and/or competitive combatants. -

I used to be all about MMA garnering as many fans as possible, but nowadays I couldn't give less of a shit. From my experience, the influx of fans to MMA is one made up largely of idiots who make discussing the sport with them as mind-achingly unpleasant as possible. So yeah, I am an elitist. What's enjoyable about talking MMA with someone who's utterly oblivious to Shamrock's competitive relevance in today's fight scene, or who thinks that Kimbo is actually a promising fighter? It would seem to me that only people with that level of ignorance are the ones who'd be all that interested in this fight, and avoiding MMA-related banter with them is hardly a loss. I'm simply too burned out to try and bring people up to speed anymore, so it's easier for me to simply avoid the conversations completely. -

John Doe & Terry Funk in the same movie = win Oh, and I can't do justice to just how awkwardly hilarious it is to hear guys threaten to tap someone out in a club. -

It'll draw, but that doesn't make it an interesting fight in the least, and I probably wouldn't want to discuss MMA with anyone who'd like that kind of match-up. -

I have more, but it's considered bad karma amongst the guys I worked with to constantly share stories with non-bouncers. The guys who normally do so are annoying idiots who just like to toot their own horn. I readily admit that I didn't fight much during my time, and received ass kickings almost as much as I handed them out. -

Drunken bouncer story time: When I was still working security, we used to get tons an TONS of cage fighting wannabes in the club (this being SoCal and all), with their claims ranging anywhere from "probable" to "are you fucking kidding me?" Now, if you're an actual pro MMA fighter/boxer who's been on TV a few times (Chris Arreola being a good example of a club regular who has proven himself), chances are that all of the bouncers are well informed of your status and will treat yuou like a fucking VIP. But for every legit guy who comes into the clubs, there's a half-dozen, semi-ripped motherfucker who talk about how they're "23-0, nigga!" to the head bouncer. Now, far be it for me to talk shit on anyone who steps into the cage (being a meager 0-1-1 myself in amateurs bouts), but when you're talking to a group of security personnel who will just as soon take a MagLite to your fucking skull as look at you, the last thing you want to do is acknowledge the fact that we have even more reason than normal to jump you 4-1. Even amongst these guys, however, the Grappler's Quest Champion stands out. Now, calling youself a "grappling"/"wrestling" champiuon is a quick way of alerting of club security that you have no clue how to take a punch. That's bad enough. But DO NOT pick out the normally most even-tmepered bouncer as the target of your drunken shit-talk (I should mention at this point that even I dwarfed this 5'7, 135lbs., pasty-white motherfucker who decided to toot his own horn), as doing so will ensure that very other member of club security has eyes set on you. After causing us all to explode with uproarious laughter at his list of accolades (he's a Desert Quest and Grappler's Quest champion who's just signed an ad deal with Tapout at the age of 18), he decides that the most chill bouncer in the entire club (a 6'0, 220lbs., bulky Mexican) is the best guy to single out as victim of his grappling skills. Needless to say, said bouncer quickly shoves him to the ground when Grappling Champion tries to clinch with him. In fact, this process repeats itself several times until the patron excuses himself. Lo andd behold, shortly after leaving my job at the club, the same know-nothing kid decides to show back up to the club, and resumes his low-alchohol-tolerance feuled rampage. Long-story-made-slightly-shorter, he ends up getting knocked on his ass, and then trying to armbar said security gurd before having his small ass lifted and slammed into the waterwall, cracking thr back of his head open. He tried to complian to the cops afterwards, only to be told that he ran the risk of being detained for underage drinking. Though different in execution, cops and bouncer are on the same side. -

- Sounds like Pang looked pretty good, which is exciting not only for the him but also in terms of the increasing competitiveness of South Korea's influx of MMA fighters. - Joe "Daddy" Kitaoka still rocks on the mat, but he's still going to have trouble with a talented sprawl & brawler (of which Inoue is a poor imitation of). - 2 years ago, the extent of my interest in Mitsuoka's career was seeing if anyone could top Chris Brennan's record of tapping him out twice in one night. This is as unlikely of a career turnaround as seen by Takashi Nakakura in SHOOTO. - No one doubted that Schultz had the tools to take on a relatively one-dimensional scrapper in Hirota, but the hype of his IFL run couldn't change the fact that his chin is still iffy, and it looks like he gave Hirota the opprotunity needed to find it. -

UFC 88: Breakthrough - Liddell vs. Evans
Lei Tong replied to jackmcmanus21's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
No, but it's not as though there's never been a fighter who's managed to beat the first Top 10 fighter he's faced. As for the Babalu fight, by "RINGS foolery" I mean not only the general inconsistency of the scoring (I thought Babalu did enough to take the second round, even with the guillotine attempt), but just the rules in general. What does it really say about any fighter is he survives on the mat in an org. that doesn't allow punches to the head on the ground? -

Who has Palhares beaten to make you actually believe this? And old past his prime, getting ready to retire Ivan Salaverry? Please... Submitting Acacio & Negao in the same night is nothing to sneeze at, and both Dipp & Moura are also solid fighters. Henderson may have beaten Renzo & Bustamante, but did so before either guy had a chance to get the fight to the ground, and in an uncomfortable weight division for both. The Ninja fight was a close scrap against a guy who's strength is definitely not his BJJ, and the Babalu match wis typical RINGS foolery. On the subject of RINGS... ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Talking up Henderson's win over Minotauro is akin to saying that Joel Casamayor deserves credit for "beating" Jose Armando Santa Cruz. It's easily one of the worst decisions in MMA history. -

Lei Tong replied to jackmcmanus21's topic in Mixed Martial Arts
He's won some fairly questionable decisions against submission specialists, which is hardly indicitive that Toquinho has nothing with which to trouble Henderson. In fact, Palhares has one of the more well-rounded top games of anyone Dan has faced in his career, and when put on his back (which has happened a fair bit), Dan has looked... well, like a wrestler on his back. That isn't to say that Dan can't simply come out and blast Palhares away with huge right hands at the opening bell, but to say that Palhares has nothing to offer in the bout is ridiculous. Besides, Henderson hasn't had a great night at MW since Bushido 9. -
