WWE General Discussion - December 2007

Agreed. The broadcasting styles of JR and Jim Ross are different. Jim Ross used to come across as an announcer you'd just as well see on any sports broadcast. The WWE style, though, doesn't want that on their broadcasts.

Gotta love that about JR. He'll bitch about other announcers not "telling a story" during the match, meanwhile he gets wrestlers mixed up and constantly fucks up the names of moves. Seriously, how many times has JR called the Wisper in the Wind the Twist of Fate? Please, he had trouble telling which one was Matt and which one was Jeff. The moves are the least of his troubles. Which makes it more puzzling why the WWE are so high on him as being the lead announcer. Because he still has gobs of fans who get pissed off every time they try to take him off camera and replace him with someone more "TV Ready". If Kevin Dunn had his way, J.R. would have been gone a long time ago. The talent, though, goes to bat for Ross to keep him on Raw.

It's a fun match that should have been the first step in turning Kennedy into a major player before certain circumstances happened. And Hornswaggle gets a big pop as well.
  4. I know you said 80's and 90's, but Danny Hodge would have been dominant - he was an excellent boxer and wrestler, and he was strong as a bull. The same goes for Stu Hart. I would have liked to have seen guys like Haku or The Barbarian. You always here how crazy tough they are so it would be interesting to see them in a MMA setting. I know at least one of them, if not both, had Sumo experience. I would also say "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, but we all remember the Brawl For All... still, in his prime, he probably would have had good enough grappling skills to have success. Same with Bob Backlund.

Flair's matches did tend to have somewhat of a formula, however, if that formula works, why change? It's like what Ricky Morton did in tag-team matches. He was able to basically do the same thing in every match: Sell an ass-kicking like he was about to get killed and then make the hot tag to Robert. The formula, though, drew boat loads of money and generated monster heat.

Hmmm... I wonder if this means they'll start using the SMW footage regularly? Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to dream. Anyways, Sunny would be a welcome addition to the female roster.

They could team him with Khali and call it the Mean Machine.

3/4 of it did... Savage and Henning vs. Ramon and Flair a month earlier. Bret was busy defending the World Title against Shawn Michaels.

In a great bit of timing, the tights Marty wears in his match against Papa Shango on Prime Time are the same ones he wore Monday night against Kennedy. Also, Louie Spicolli shows up as an enhancement guy against "El Matador" Tito Santana, and Dwayne "Gillberg" Gill is sporting one of the most God awful hair styles I've ever seen. I remember him being one of the usual jobbers, but damn... I don't remember that hair.

I agree with what you're saying. But, they haven't really done that as much in recent years, at least to the point where it's someone who just plain wouldn't or shouldn't be in the main-event. Since 2000, the final sixes have usually been pretty strong. 2000: Al Snow, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, Kane, X-Pac, Rock 2001: Haku, Undertaker, Rikishi, Billy Gunn, Rock, Kane 2002: Kane, RVD, Booker, Austin, Perfect, Angle 2003: Maven, A-Train, RVD, Batista, Kane, Undertaker 2004: Goldberg, Cena, RVD, Jericho, Angle, Big Show 2005: Christian, Benoit, Flair, Rey, Edge, Cena 2006: Shelton, HBK, Carlito, RVD, HHH, Orton 2007: Chavo, Khali, MVP, Edge, Orton, HBK Guys in bold would have been ones to stick out like sore thumbs, IMO. You could argue that Haku would have been okay since he was going to be feuding with Undertaker and Kane at the time anyway. A-Train maybe would have fit in '03 too. Probably early, but any word on how Corino did in his tryout matches? And chances on him getting a contract out of it? Wasn't The Big Show the last man to be eliminated in 2000?

    The Old School questions thread

Vader was told by the English speaking producer to 'ham it up' when the host asked the "Is wrestling fake?" question. He did, and apparently it went too far for the hosts liking, and he filed charges. In that respect, it started out as a work, but it turned very real, including the arrest and detainment. And as WWE 24/7 is now remidning me, it lead to Ken Shamrock cutting "incredible" promos where he called Vader a bully, then called out Mike Tyson for God knows what reason, citing he was a bully too. I remember there was rumblings of the WWE wanting to do a Shamrock/Tyson fight.

Was this when Bret was in the wheelchair? IIRC, he was legitimately recovering from surgery. I always thought the wheelchair made Bret that much cooler as a heel since he was ordering the Hart Foundation to do all the damage while he was injured.
