    American Idol 3

Apparently this was a morning radio show joke that got blown out of proportion. Imagine is an easy song to sing, but it's difficult to sing WELL. It's one of those songs where, if you don't sing it close to the way Lennon sang it, it just doesn't come off well. Just my opinion though.

Who has the best/worst All-Star Game?

I've gotta agree. No other all-star game remains as true to the regular season games as baseball.

    American Idol 3

That's always how it seems to be, isn't it? Really, REALLY not looking forward to how Barbie smiles her way through it. I think George will have the most problems though. He's a good singer, but he hasn't handled the "challenging" (and for these kids, I think that big band WILL be challenging) themes very well.

    New Releases for 4/29/2004

Avengers #81, $2.25 7/10. Decent Austen storyline, not that it will mean anything in a few months. New Mutants #13, $2.99 6/10. Decent story, nice cover, horrid art. Weapon X #22, $2.99 6.5/10. Probably the best of the X-title bridge books, unless you count Exiles.

Of course it is - and it's racist. There's only one Caucasian left. Although I suppose that's not what the Queen of Pop meant... Shoulda let John sing it out with "My Way"...

    Star Wars vs. Star Trek...

I believe that vulkon.com has "BuffyCons", if you're looking. I think that the autographs can be expensive though, as they tend to do sell things in pricey "packages", as opposed to stuff like the Motor City Comicon, which gets a lot of Trek guys (and, apparently, Alfonso Ribero) where you pay them individually for autographs. As for whether you SHOULD pay for autographs, well, that's an entirely different thread.

    Star Wars vs. Star Trek...

Point. At least they're not 250lb women dressed up as Sailor Moon... ...and I apologize for anyone who can't get that image out of their minds. I saw that at a comicon 3 years ago and it's never gone away...

    American Idol 3

Well, after watching this, I'm wondering if Katie "Bouncy" Webber and Scooter Girl SHOULDN'T have been here. Gloria Estefan's music killed these kids. Anyways, thoughts: - Diana, of all people, was the best singer. It wasn't even close tonight - John threw up a big fat turd, but then again, there was no way that he could do well with this genre. My pick to go. - Gloria Estefan set a new standard for a guest judge being completely and utterly useless. And this was with her songs being butchered right in front of her. - Fantasia. Energy, yes, but sang hella-bad. And being sassy still annoys me a lot. - LaToya was... adequate. - Jasmine. Well, she looked pretty good. Singing was a bit flat, but not too bad. - George wasn't as bad as John, but really, that ain't saying much. Bottom 3: - Fantasia, John and George. John finally gets the boot, and everyone (including John) breathes a sigh of relief. The kid's only 16, so he's got lots of time to improve.

Books you're shamed to admit that you read

Which ones - the current editions or the old blue hardcovers? I always hear about how they're "dumbed down" now, so I'm just curious.

    Favorite Series Premiere?

Yeah, I can't say that I'm a big fan of Diane Warren music. Still, it could have been worse - I've heard a Rod Stewart version of that song...

    Favorite Series Premiere?

Most series premieres that I watch, I like. OK, Firefly's sucked large, and from what I understand that was probably the worst of the eps they could have opened with. Why you wouldn't start with the PILOT, I dunno, but this is Fox. They cancelled a decent show (Dark Angel) for one they love based on a scriptment, and then throw it in the timeslot of death, and expect it to do well, hoping for another X-Files-like miracle. And yet, I still don't think they're as stupid as the ABC suits. Anyways, favourite (relatively recent) premieres: Dark Angel, Karen Sisco, Keen Eddie, Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager (both pretty much downhill from there). I can't really say that I've loved any sitcoms right from the pilot, as they generally take time to really gain their comedic footing. OK, I liked Alf from the beginning, but what did I know? I was a kid then...

    Star Wars vs. Star Trek...

You know, I think that Hamill is more praised for being the definitive Joker more than Luke Skywalker. At least by the geek community, anyways. Star Trek, I love DS9 and The Next Generation, but to be honest, I love Star Wars more. I think it's because of the Expanded Universe and the idea that anything that happens there is "official" (unless Lucas changes his mind, of course). Trek fans are, I think, scarier and more fanatical, but that may just come from the fact that they're willing to wear TONS of makeup just to look like a Klingon. Anyways, I agree that they're different animals. Trek has roots in world politics and sci-fi, while Star Wars has always had a fantasy/serial feel to it. I thought McCallum was just the DoP, as Lucas is still the director.

The 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread

Hey, it worked for him in the last series. The calls all went the Leafs' way in Game 2 after Quinn started whining after Game 1. You'd think that wouldn't work. It's not like Quinn started being a grumpy old man when the playoffs started - he does this year-round...

New Iron Chef America series on Food TV

I think B.A. was busy, or in jail or something. It's possible that they tested it out, and couldn't find someone suitable in time. I've only seen the first show (Flay vs Sakai), but it's a helluva lot better than Iron Chef USA and should get better if they continue this. What I liked: - The rapport between Brown and Kevin Brauch. Also liked the inside reference of Brauch as a "spirited" reporter (since he hosts "The Thirsty Traveller" - Mark Dasacos (sp) as "The Chairman". Does a sufficient job, plus the chop on "Allez Cuisine!!" is a nice touch. - No reference whatsoever to Iron Chef USA, not even with Kerry Simon as a taster. - Lots of references to Iron Chef - Sakai has the same voiceover guy What I didn't like: - You can occasionally hear the audience, but they're not visible. There's no need to pipe in noise, but SOME noise would be nice. - Morimoto was right - everything DOES seem a bit too convenient in the stadium. Maybe a bit too modern, I guess. - The "Iron Chef America" uniforms. It would be nicer if they had more than a colour patch to distinguish them, Batali's shorts notwithstanding. They're just a bit too bland. Anyways, my thoughts on Flay-Sakai: Totally rigged. I can buy that the dishes were roughly even, and maybe you give Flay "home court" advantage, but that's was a pretty decisive win on points. Essentially, I think this was done to "pass the torch", so to speak. Evidence: - First IC battle, and the Iron Chef loses, even to Sakai? - Sakai never lost a fish battle, so losing in a "Signature food" battle gives IC America more prestige. - It seemed like a lot of time was spent stressing Sakai's status as the "greatest of the Iron Chefs". - A chef and a food critic on the panel gives more credence to the result, even with a whodat? as the third. - In hindsight, it seemed like Sakai was "pulling his punches". I didn't think that it was his best stuff, frankly.
