Ever felt like you just can't get the right job?

Yeah, I actually have Gaylord College's career lady on my facebook page. She wanted to meet with me, but I couldn't get any before the summer because I was still living in Dodge City. Yeah I'd do the latter you suggested (working somewhere because i want to get into a business), but I was honestly miserable doing it. I really think all the fun was just sucked right out of writing. Maybe I'll make some connections stringing and find an opportunity I really want to have. Who knows.

Yeah, but that's where I draw a blank. Do I parlay that business and possible managment experience into a better job with a new comapny or do I start at the bottom again at a new company?

Ever felt like you just can't get the right job?

That's why I was going to look into stringing. I know a lot of smaller (and bigger for that matter) papers are always looking for stringers during high school football season. I'd love to string and just go to some local high school games and write. I really enjoyed covering prep football and basketball too. I just didn't like all the other BS. I've covered D-1 and preps, and I found the preps to be much more enjoyable. I think I'm going to take the Enterprise job. It's got good advancement opportunities (i know someone that was a branch manager after 13 months), decent pay, and I like the hours. I really kind of want to be a family man. I want to be able to be home with my kids in the evenings, see them on the weekends and be able to afford to give them a decent living. This really seems like the job I can do that at. I remember when I was growing up my dad was P.I. and he didn't make shit and he worked shitty hours because he investigated employees ripping off businesses. So he'd usually get hired as an assistant manager at Godfather's Pizza or somewhere and work for a month or so until he nabbed the person in question. The payday at the end was good, but until that point it was shitty pay. I didn't go without, but at the same time they couldn't afford to do stuff like let me play sports for a community team because they couldn't afford the equipment. If my kids want to play football or baseball I want to be able to let them.

Most of the police stations around here require you to basically have completed half of a college degree. You go through all the testing and billions of interviews and then you get hired and they send you to CLEET (the training academy) and you get paid while doing that. So you go to school, sort of, but get paid to go to school. I get paid 9/hour at DirecTV. I hate it just because we're a 3rd party center that works for DirecTV and training would only last a week if they didn't spend so much time shilling DirecTV to us. Also has anyone ever heard of that FailingEnterprise website? Seriously from my experience it's absolute BS. Yeah they try to sell you the extra insurance (which isn't a bad thing. go total their car, you paid the insurance) and they do try to force you into upgrades. But some of the stuff they accuse Enterprise of doing (not holding reservations, etc.) is done by every rental car company. Seinfeld made fun of it in the 80's for gods sake. Also they flat out make stuff up about employment. Saying you only get paid 7 bucks an hour, you work 13 hour shifts, you work 70 hours a week. That's all a lie and not even possible because Enterprise is only open 10.5 hours a day!

You know, 30K isn't a bad wage in Oklahoma. Like I said before, it's the cheapest state to live in. The only problem I have with Enterprise is it loses a little bit of it's "glamour" or whatever. At least as a journalist or cop people go "oh wow, that's cool." and are interested in your job because it's kind of out of the ordinary. At Enterprise it's like "Ummm....ok. That's cool." Then again I need to make a living, not have people be interested in my job. Right now I'm working temporarily in a call center answering DirecTV technical calls. It really sucks the meat missile and I'm surrounded by retards. When the teacher in the training class holds up an S-Video cable and says "Does anyone know what this is?" and people are confused and need to study said cable to figure it out, you know you've hit the bottom.

Ever felt like you just can't get the right job?

Well the place completely fell apart. It was owned by Morris Communications (shit) and then bought by Gatehouse (more shit). I guess privately owned papers are the way to go. The managing editor left in December and the penny-pinching publisher decided not to fill his position. So we had a reporter in the interim position who was pulling double duty. Our publisher liked to talk about how we all wore many hats at the Globe. Then our education reporter left, then I left, and now the crime and city reporter is leaving. Oh and the publisher quit and left his mess for someone else to clean up. Right now they have an interim publisher, reporter/interim ME, a part-time kid helping design sports (he can't write just design), one clerk/page designer, and a page designer/photographer. I'm just not a fan of the newspaper business right now. Everyone is going downhill and jobs are being cut left and right. At Enterprise I may be a corporate whore, but at least I afford my family a future. Plus the hours are more family oriented. At a newspaper your hours are just all over the place. I worked about 12 hours a day, but it was never straight. It was always spread out and crazy. I'd work 5 hours and go home for an hour and then go back for 2 or whatever. Plus, stringing allows me to do what I really want to do: just cover a game and then write the gamer. And, on the subject Tzar brought up. I hear that a lot, but I never know exactly where these jobs are. Like when I sit there and try to think of a job to work I just draw a giant blank. Seriously the only jobs that have occured to me are at the newspaper, Enterprise and being a cop. Everyone suggests TV, but I don't want to work for TV. My family says "You're throwing your education away if you don't do what your degree is exactly for." That's complete BS. I know people that get jobs that require a degree, but it's not in their field. They do just fine. And I think my dad just really wants to push me into TV.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

I wasn't mentioning you. I was just saying I've never questioned anyone on here's fandom (except maybe cartman with USC) so don't question mine.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

Oh don't bring that shit in here. I've said before in other threads I liked them. I said last season I liked them and it sucked because they were never on TV. I've said before I've gone to Hornets games just to see the Celtics. Don't bring any of that questioning my fanhood crap in here MY. If you really want to know how I became a Celtics fan though? It's kind of embarassing. I like the history and I love me some Larry Bird (call it white person inferiority or whatever). But, I started liking those things after I started watching the Celtics. I was a little kid, I started watching basketball and had nobody to root for. I was like 7, I picked the Celtics because my favorite color was green. I said "Hey those guys have green uniforms." Then as I grew older and started learning about the team and the history I just liked them more and more. All my fanhood of teams starts with one small thing, as I imagine it does for everyone that doesn't live close to their teams. I only started liking the Eagles because of Randall Cunningham. The Red Sox because my brother was a Cubs fan and I picked the other futile team in the majors at the time (obviously not futile anymore). Besides there aren't any pro-teams in Oklahoma. And since my dad was a diehard Cowboys fan I began to dislike all things Texas-related. But, I haven't questioned anyone on this boards Lakers fandom so don't question my Celtics fandom.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

So according to some dude on ESPN.com you can't be a real Celtics fan unless you were born before 1979. I hate it when people try to impose limits like that on fandom. "I really like this team." "No you can't. You weren't born before 79." "But, I really really enjoy watching them play. I like their uniforms, players, history, everything. I love this team." "Sorry. Shuffle those feelings away. You're too young."

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

Fucking a'! This is awesome. I was at work and I was on my break and it was 70-50. I was like "son of a bitch". I took another bathroom break and saw it was 75-75 and I started getting excited. I went back and told the guys in my training class and they all hated the Lakers too and everyone got excited. We asked our trainer to ask his gf out on the floor, through instant messenger, what the score of the game was. It flashes across the screen "97-91 Boston won" and a huge cheer exploded throughout our training room. I hope the Celtics go ahead and close it out Sunday.

So I started this temporary job while I'm trying to get hired on at the PD. It's taking customer service calls for DirecTV. I started the training last night and the trainers spent the entire class bashing on Dish Network any chance he got. He also wouldn't let us have cell phones in class because they could be used to "steal secrets" and we weren't allowed to take any of our training books home because they too could be used to steal secrets. What the hell? You're telling me Dish Network has to spy on a training class to figure out what to do? The way he talked about Dish Network I pictured their customer service training center as a smoky room in the back of a bar with a guy with an eyepatch smoking a cigar and speaking in some thick accent.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

It'll be a blowout in favor of the Lakers if Pierce and KG don't pull their heads out of their asses. Hell the whole Celtics, they need to be aggressive and take it to the hoop. Aside from Kobe the Lakers don't have a lot of guys that can guard KG/Allen/Pierce when they decide to head to the hoop. But, I just have a feeling my world is coming crashing down soon. The Lakers are going to blow the Celtics out and the Celtics confidence will be gone and the Lakers will win and we'll get shots of Nick Lachey or Mike Myers pretending to be LA fans in the crowd. Maybe we'll see Snoop Dogg rep'n the Lakers despite the fact he was also rep'n the Warriors last season. Man.....I need to find a way to quit being so pessimistic with sports! I'm that way with all sports. Hmmm

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

Well I didn't get to watch tonight's game because I started a new job. But, from what I've read I'm a bit encouraged. As I said earlier I really thought this game was going to be a huge blowout. It had all the makings for one and the Celtics kept it close. I'm wondering if they take one in LA now. They appear to have ability to do so, because from what I've read KG and Pierce weren't all that great. Then again if King is right and it turns into a game 4 blowout then I go back to being discouraged. The Celtics really need one of the next two for confidence. And I don't like Sasha scoring 20. I just really really don't like that guy. Oh and now I remember a reason I hate the games being in LA. The bandwagon movie stars, and the fact the camera has to focus on them and then every gamer written has to mention them. I mean most of these people would be at Clippers games next season if the Clippers and Lakers played role reversal.

I don't know if Benson can completely qualify as bust until he goes and underproduces for another team. Then again, that's probably pretty likely to happen. Well I guess to play for another team he has to make sure Goodell doesn't suspend his ass.

On the driving thing. I find it funny when I'm at a stoplight and there is a car next to me and the light turns green and they take off and speed down there while I gingerly take off and conserve my gas. It's funny when we come to another stoplight and that person is stopped and I pull up beside them. It's like "Hey dude, we both ended up in the same place and I didn't waste my gas speeding."

MMA Comments that Don't Warrant a Thread

I thought Anderson already dead the rumors of him moving up to 205... I figured he would want to beat Okami 1st before moving up, since in the past he's expressed how much he wants to avenge that bullshit loss. Why would Anderson move up to fight a contender and not the champion? Oh that's right, Chuck is still the golden boy. I don't really want to see this fight, but if it did go down I think Anderson would murder-lize him like every other opponent. Unless the size difference is just too much. Anderson just seems skinny for 205. The joke amongst me and a friend (and i mean it, joke don't take me seriously) is that Dana wants to do anything in his power to have Silva defeated. Mainly because Silva came in and beat on his golden boy MW champ (rich) and proceeded to beat on everyone else. So he's going to send Chuck after him in an attempt to have him beaten. It's just a crazy wrestling conspiracy. lol Then again.......Dana does look unhappy everytime he has to put the belt around Silva's waist.....

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

Does anyone expect a Lakers blowout tonight? It sure seems to be shaping up to be one. Think about it. The Celtics quit with a 24 point lead the other night. They thought they were safe. LA was able to hit some shots from downtown to get back into the game. Now I agree with Jackson that the momentum probably doesn't carry-over, but the confidence of seeing those 3-pointers go in regardless of whether the other team was trying their hardest to defend them or not is a HUGE confidence booster. Plus the Celtics won't be able to play the physical defense they have played, and they won't get the benefit of the calls (i expect LA to take waaaay more foul shots). I just see LA winning by double digits tonight. Once again, my heart doesn't want them to but my head says otherwise.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

Man, has anyone ever read the comments on stories over at ESPN? There's some real crazies posting over there. I just don't get people saying Pierce faked the injury. Even better is the crazy Lakers fan that claims the Celtics bought and paid for this title.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

I know Kobe wants to be good guy Kobe now that gets his teammates involved and so, but damn dude needs to take matters into his own hands now. Fuck passing to Sasha, Radmonivich, Walton, Farmar, etc. He needs to just take it at the basket and be Kobe Bryant. Not that I want that to happen since I'm behind the C's but it's just an observation. Besides, trusting his new buddies sure didn't do him any good on that last play when he probably could've received a pass but instead Sasha jacks one up. Although, I was impressed with Gasol for the most part in this game. He got aggressive and went to the basket instead of looking a little frightened like he did in game one. I'm just really still pissed with the way the Celtics started taking it easy when they were up 23 knowing who they were playing and knowing they wouldn't quit. Damn. I can't get LA erasing that deficit and Boston looking listless with the bad passes and stupid shots out of my head.

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

I'm not disagreeing. I'm just saying that the Lakers fans that were angry about the FT disparity will probably have their "revenge" in game 3. I also think LA may win all 3 in LA and if that happens I think the series is over. I really really hope that doesn't happen though. I don't trust the Celtics to be able to sweep games 6 and 7. The Celtics have shown a tendency to coast when up big(as evidenced tonight) and the Lakers have shown they never quit (as evidenced tonight). So the Celtics really really need to take a game in LA. Oh and Leon Powe, did anyone see that coming?
  24. Damaramu

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

I know there's a lot of bitching for the refs in this game, but do people really think there won't be a huge FT disparity in LA? I mean maybe not every game, but at least one of them will have a huge difference and I bet the Lakers shoot more FTs in every game in LA.
  25. Damaramu

2008 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

The end of that game was waaaay too close for comfort. The damn Celtics thought they had it in the bag and started coasting way too early to let the Lakers back in. I heard some people say the burden was on the Lakers if they go down 2-0 in the series because they'd have to win 4 out of 5. But, I really think the Celtics HAVE to steal one in LA. Because if the Lakers win 3 straight at home they'd be really jacked and confident for games 6 and 7 and probably win the series ala Miami Heat. (well win it legit, not on the line) The Celtics just have to get one in LA. And they need to quit coasting when they get up big.
