The OAO "Help Broaden My Musical Horizons" Thread
Edwin MacPhisto replied to Matt Young's topic in Music
Give me a base of stuff you listen to (besides Ashlee Simpson) and I'll make you some recommendations off of that. -
These two are coming to do a music hall show in Charlottesville in a week and a half. I have no idea at all if they'd be worth seeing.

Neither. Collector's mentality, but not extreme. You get satisfaction from having an actual material good instead of a fake. Nothing new. I buy CDs all the time. It makes me a better person.

Pope reborn as "The Incredible Popeman"
Edwin MacPhisto replied to Rob E Dangerously's topic in Literature
Circle was disappointing. Pope stuff was decent, though. -
So I just watched this show for the first time ever. Saw the first 4 episodes. Fan-freaking-tastic.

There's not a lot of coverage on major news outlets about this because it's largely a non-story at this point, but this article covers the complaints thus far registered. Excerpted: And later in the article: They really shouldn't be detaining anyone in any capacity, as big a problem as border-hopping might be. Observation's okay, but seizure isn't the proper channel. Right now they seem pretty harmless, but if they generate too much interference for the actual Border Patrol, they should pack up and leave it to them again.

It's a bit of a pain. "Nausicaa" has the same freewheeling fantastic spirit as the end of Chapter IV in Portrait of the Artist, and you do hit that invocation rather abruptly. Fortunately, I think "Oxen of the Sun" picks up substantially once you've "evolved" about half of the way. And then there's "Circe," which just flies. As part of my Ulysses seminar last year, we tried acting out some of "Circe." The best laid plans... Coat, don't leave us hanging on your progress. You're increasing the board's Ulysses readers by 50%. -
Broccoflower. Yikes. I'm not seeing results.

After you get "The Michael Vick Experience"
Edwin MacPhisto replied to jimmy no nose's topic in Sports
Subtle and excellent. UVA kids are having a field day with this one. I expect piles of "Ron New Mexico" signs when Marcus Vick comes to town for the UVA/VT game in the fall. They're expecting Marcus Vick? Well, if he decides not to screw any more 14 year-olds or drive 90 stoned off his ass again, he should still be the Hokies' starter by the end of the season. One Vick's as bad as another here. -

"Take it to the Limit" takes it easy, while "Take It Easy" takes it to the limit. Ohhh yeah.

I'm not even arguing that the Catholic Church should change significantly. Not sure how that position seems to have been ascribed to me. A drastic change would cause it to collapse in a fashion that almost certainly be worse than it is now.
-
No Pope anytime soon, liberal, moderate, or conservative Catholic, will change the Church's position on those issues. Which is why the other ones are the ones worth noting. Gay marriage isn't even an issue with the Church; homosexual sex itself is still the problem.
-
Someone more hardline on hot-button church issues that are traditional, but not doctrinal. I.e., considering the ordination of women, considering contraceptive allowance, etc. To put it in brief: the more conservative a clergyman is, the more likely he is to treat traditional aspects of the Church as if they were doctrinal/unchangeable.

"Estranged" is far and away my favorite Guns n' Roses song, and I love the video too. It's so ridiculous. Slash on the conveyor belt has a certain savoire faire.

It's not as difficult as the reputation suggests, but the first two episodes are without a doubt two of the most straightforward in the entire book. It gets tougher, than easier, and then there's some toughness all throughout. -

Hold on tight. Episode #3, Proteus, is the first real killer. -
Good points re: the aging of Vatican II. Africa's a troubling case, though. While African bishops have asked the Vatican to make an allowance for condoms for the sake of AIDS prevention, they're among the most conservative Catholics around on just about every other issue. Same with the rising amounts of Asian Catholics. It'll be interesting to see which half of that situation the Cardinals end up valuing more. I'm thinking that, with all but three appointed by John Pizaul, the conservative push will win out.

Dude, that video fuckin' rules. Then again, i love weird videos, but that's just me Image-wise, it's fine. The awkwardness of it all coupled with the rhythm of how it's shot doesn't go with the music at all, though.

Like hell it's not. Tort of negligence. There's been a huge rise in non-disclosure of STDs as negligence cases in the past decade, and it's one of the most frequently won cases in civil courts. Vick won't get hit for anything off this, but regular people do all the time. -
Burnt orange is a way better choice for punishment anyway. Pink's in these days.
