What political party do I choose?
Dr. Tyler; Captain America replied to Failed Bridge's topic in Current Events
Actually, that's a Democrat, based on the rhetoric being used this year. You're in favor of welfare reform, but you didn't say you're against the welfare state. You're in favor of a shift in foreign policy away from Iraq and towards our real threats. You're in favor of marital freedom. You're a Democrat. -
Rush Limbaugh vs Michael J Fox
Dr. Tyler; Captain America replied to Gary Floyd's topic in Current Events
The thing I love about this is that it was such a win-win. If the wingers don't say anything, the ad is extremely effective and we win votes throughout StL and KC. If they say anything, all they can say is "Well, he's faking!!!" and spark outrage, since it's freakin' Michael J. Fox they're attacking. I'm glad we could count on Rush Limbaugh to take the bait and make the Republicans look, once again, like jackasses. -

It benefits them when you get disillusioned and refuse to hold them accountable. They count on young people being morons, so that they can focus their efforts on benefitting the few people in this country that do, in fact, vote. If you're perfectly comfortable paying 1/3 of your check to people whom you had no say in electing, well, you're a moron. -

The thing is, you just made a broad statement, and in your retraction, you completely narrowed your criticism to a demographic that doesn't exist. City council candidates won't even be on the air yet, and there aren't any candidates saying that they "support the office" and getting lambasted over it. It's mostly the House and Senate candidates who rubberstamp the president who are getting killed with those sorts of ads. -

Thing is, there is some value in comparing candidates to the President. Considering Talent votes 94% of the time with Bush, and most people are unfamiliar with how he stands on some issues (...well, really, all issues, considering he doesn't exactly have a platform worth speaking about), it's a good idea to let people know that he stands for the values of a President with whom only 34% of Missourians agree. Thus, the "standing with Bush" ad is useful; if you're voting, would you choose the rubber stamp of someone who you don't support just because he's your rubber stamp? Of course not. -

As some of you know, I've got an interest in the McCaskill-Talent race. Check out Claire's latest ad, which is going to be playing during the World Series. Jeez. That makes ME uncomfortable, and I'm not even supporting Talent. -
The Habs offer is hysterical. Yes plz i'd like to trade a franchise talent for a bunch of mediocre players that we don't need thx. I wouldn't even take Samsonov for him. Malkin's part of the team's future, while the Habs players probably wouldn't even be enough to vault the Pens into the playoffs. That would be the dumbest trade in the history of hockey. The only think that could possibly lure Malkin away from the Pens is a litany of first round draft picks, and even then, it would be a tough decision. Some scouts have said that Malkin compares favorably to Lemieux in each's stage of development. No chance in hell they'd trade that potential for friggin' Aebischer.

Not according to realclearpolitics.com. As long as it's below 40 in MO, though, I don't really care. And, I don't anticipate it getting anywhere close, so I should be cool.

It's better than him being a wishy-washy hack, as he's been for most of his administration. -
Senate votes to expand stem cell research
Dr. Tyler; Captain America replied to Big Ol' Smitty's topic in Current Events
The funny thing about this issue, though, is that the bill only allows couples who froze embryos for fertility purposes to donate them to science instead of destroying them. Either way, the cells are going to be destroyed. This is a symbolic action, and a retarded one. But at least he's standing by his own symbolic, retarded convictions. -

Just because 70 percent of the country agrees with something, doesn't mean it should become policy. That being said, this is one of the rare issues about which Bush isn't so concerned about what's good for the party as much as he's just showing his personal conviction. You could argue that he's trying to solidify the religious right base for the Republicans to keep Congress in '06, but that's sort of screwed up by the fact that many Republicans voted for this, too. Still, good for him. I think he's an utter moron for vetoing this, but at least he stood by his convictions for once. -
And then make him their head coach.

In this scenario, are we the Islanders or another franchise?
-
Hahahahahahahahahahaha at this Isles thing. Doesn't this have shades of Major League in it?

Seriously, playing behind the Pittsburgh D has to be discouraging for any goaltender. With the likes of Ric Jackman, Dick Tarnstrom, Rob Scuderi, Josef Melichar, Steve Poapst, and Lyle Odelein playing D, it makes you think Sergei Gonchar is a Norris favorite.

Fair enough, semantics. I thought you were calling the observation BS. -
I actually got an offer from McCaskill's campaign, and the internal polling they showed me was much different than the 47-46 number you gave me. I'll leave it at that.

The problem for Israel attacking Iran is geographical, though. There's a big army in the middle of Iraq that probably wouldn't look too friendly at Israel for marching through their lines. -

This one's escalating, but I just saw a funny headline on CNN.com about Hezbollah denying involvement in rocket attacks against Haifa. Hezbollah: "What, rockets? Uh............. we didn't do it?" -

Are you kidding? Knowing the UN, they'll do jack shit and pass a resolution condemning Israel's actions and do nothing about it. Or, maybe, we'll sanction their potato exports. -

I don't know, I'm kind of enjoying this. CNN.com just reported that Lebanese terrorists are transporting the hostages into Iran. Now, my dream scenario is possible: they'll murk Lebanon into submission and they demolish Iran's nuclear program!
