Saw this movie tonight, I understand it was pretty heavily acclaimed. I want to ask: why? I thought it had many plot holes/WAY confusing plot, and though it had some powerful, well directed scened scenes, often the unnecessary gore really took away from it. Also, the whole rape/murder/rebirth scene I could have lived without. I understand the film is a parable, but for a film to work on another level, it must first work on the basic level; unless you're goign to go whole hog surrealist a la el Topo.. Look at Battle Royale, there's a terrific movie (and it is disturbing) which works both as a movie and a parable. Am I missing something? Can someone adequatly make sense of this movie?

Oh, for sure. At this juncture, I think they had a great disturbing/black comedy opening sequence. Whatever you say, that opening montage is powerfcul. Then they had to build a movie off of it. And I still think it would have worked better if A) the first scene was the most gory one B) gore wasn't used really at all. Once the lady started daikon raddishing her hand, it just went to the absurd and disgusting. Are we to believe a shiity philisophical pep talk from some children would render you completely immune to pain?

Of course it's been overblown. (*and it was my gf*) I think Bush should've gotten out of there and seen what was up, but on the whole, he did what any decent president would've done once he was presenting himself to the nation. (and yeah, Gore would;ve done the same thing. people seem to like to say that he would have gone touchy-feely immediately.) no one should explot or defame others based on 9/11. I think it has been safely established that it was a major, general failing, and it brought to the forefront the terrorism issue, which no one imagined would be what it is now.

People will use any idology to take control of people. Look at Communism, which is the most passive (and non-religious) doctrine at its core. Look at Romans persecuting Christians. Look at the Romans turning around and declaring that Christianity was the way. Spanish Inquisition etc etc etc Religion isn't evil, however, when people are completely devoted to an idea, they can be easily manipulated to evil means. It's the fucking truth. That's a pretty whack quote, I don't think she's pro Osama, though. look at what she's saying. She's saying the Arab people stick up for him because he helps them out.
