The OaO 2003-2004 NBA Season Thread!

Kobe pulled a Gilbert Arenas last night, refusing to shoot after being criticized for shooting too much. I just don't know what to say here...I'm obviously not taking away from Sac, but this may well have cost LA the division, and Phil Jackson will likely do nothing about it. Guys like Kobe, AI, Carmelo can get away with murder (or rape...ba-dum bum) should they choose because they know the front office has their back. It's ridiculous. The more I try to respect guys like Kobe/T-Mac, the more they piss me off with their constant whining about the criticism they receive. I gained a ton of respect for Tyronn Lue, who is willing to be honest about where he feels he should be in his career. I still feel the Wizards made a mistake letting him walk. If I'm Grunfield, I keep him and say fuck Arenas, as I know Lue is putting team first. And it makes me hate Tracy McBaby that much more, knowing while Lue is doing wht he's doing, McBaby will push blame on everyone BUT himself, despite the first few games into the season him saying "fuck the playoffs, I'm going for the scoring title." Another guy I've gained a ton of respect for is Paul Pierce. Here's a guy who, at any time, could have turned on that organization for what he was put through this season, but kept his head up, and, unlike McBaby, was willing to accept the pressure of being his team's "only All-Star", as McB likes to say, and as a result they're in the playoffs once again, despite, while Welsch flourished and became a great role player, having less around him than the 19-61 Magic, IMO. Right now, IMO, Paul Pierce is the best SG in the NBA.

I didn't think about it that way...I just assumed he meant five years. He may have meant appearances.

I'll take your word for it...I just expected better from Rivers, being a former player and coach. Instead we get yet another Laker homer.

Three fouls on Shaq with just over 7 minutes left in the first half. And a T from the bench to boot.

Boston gets the last spot in the East by virtue of Philly's loss to the Nets.

Jamal Crawford drops 50 on the Raptors as the Bulls win in OT. Richard Jefferson is on the Olympic team. Said he was a replacement for Vince Carter, but from what I knew VC himself was a replacement in the prelims for Kobe. So I don't really know what's going on there.

4 out of 6. No, it was 4 out of 5. Yanks won in 96, then 98-00.

Unless they hit it big in free agency, I doubt it, as Damps is a FA and is likely to leave. I guess I exaggerated a bit when I said Wade should be ROTY...I just think he should be getting Melo/Bron-level respect because of what his team's done and what he's done, but he's gotten barely anything, as SVG is getting most of the credit for the Heat's success. In Denver, Melo has more talent around him than Wade does IMO, yet they're giving us the impression that he's totally responsible for Denver's success, while I've heard Bzdelik's name come up as a COTYC literally ONE time. So I'll reword what I said, Wade *deserves* to be ROTY, but Carmelo *should* win it.

    Biggest team busts?

1995 Orlando Magic, maybe the biggest choke job in NBA Finals history. 2003 Pacers, started out 37-15, only one game worse than this season at that point, finished 11-19, blew a 17-point lead and lost game 1 vs Boston, never recovered and were eliminated in Round 1. This was a very humbling experience for us, however, and now we have homecourt throughout the playoffs. Most credit goes to the coaching change and Ron Artest's turnaround attitude-wise. Portland Trail Blazers from 2000-this season: Deepest team in the NBA, but blew 15-point lead vs LA in WCF game 7 in 2000, and it's been all downhill from there. In fact, I don't think they've been past the first round since. Lots I think blame the post-2000 falter on the Shawn Kemp trade.

*Revisits* Picked the Bulls, Magic and Sixers to make it in the East, they're replaced by Knicks, Heat and Bucks. Picked the Suns and Sonics as my 7-8 in the West, replaced by Memphis and whichever team ends up in eighth. I'll still stick with SA as long as they're still there, but I honestly think the Pacers can beat them in a 7-game series should they play in the finals.

You're right, I forgot about Philly. They still have games against the Pacers and Nets, though, I don't think they can catch the Celts.

OK: East: Pacers, Nets, Pistons have 1-2-3 locked up, Pistons will have homecourt against NJ should they meet. Milwaukee, Miami, NO have all clinched, and those teams will be in the 4-5-6 spots. NY has clinched, Boston has tiebreak on the Cavs and is in with a win, those two will compete for 7-8. West: Sac's magic number is 3 for the division, but they still meet Minnesota tonight and LA on Sunday. Minnesota has the same magic number in their division. SA and LA are the only teams that can take the division titles from their respective leaders. Memphis and Dallas have the 5 and 6 wrapped up, whichever order they end up in. Houston is currently in the 7 spot, but only two games up on Denver, Portland and Utah, who all have identical records, with Denver owning the tiebreak. And the way Houston's been playing lately, one of those teams, if they get hot, could go all the way up to 7. Here's my calls: Sac hangs on to the division and the top seed. SA runs the table and wins another division title to grab the 2 seed. LA has a tough schedule, I could see them falling to the 4 seed. Memphis holds onto the 5, setting up a showdown with LA in their first-ever playoff series. Houston hangs onto the 7 with a favorable schedule. Utah winds up with the 8 seed, but all those teams have tough schedules. So: 1-Sac vs 8-Utah 4-LA vs 5-Mem 3-Min vs 6-Dal 2-SA vs 7-Hou As for the East, Milwaukee should hold onto the 4, Mia has tiebreak on NO and should get the 5, with NO at 6. Boston hasn't clinched yet, but is certainly in as I doubt Cleveland runs the table. So they'll get a rematch with Indy while NY stays at 7. So: 1-Ind vs 8-Bos 4-Mil vs 5-Mia 3-Det vs 6-NO 2-NJ vs 7-NY
