    The Highschool Thread

In my freshman year, we had three high schools in the area. The one I went to, Madison Heights, as well as Anderson and Highland. Anderson High School was closing, so they were going to move half the students into MH, half into Highland, and rename MH into Anderson. So, we had a big festival at the end of the year, with food and games and shit. There was one moment in French class where the teacher told us that sac à dos was the term for backpack, then asked how many of us had one. After those that did raised their hands, a black kid blurted out "bitch, you ain't got no sac à dos!" which caused the class to explode in laughter. Also, a canoe trip at some point. That's about it. Sophomore year, I got suspended for cussing out another staff member, and got sucker punched by some guy I had pushed into a table after he continually threw wads of paper at me. The guy probably would have kicked my ass, but for some reason he decided not to stick around. My geometry teacher liked to throw erasers at people she caught sleeping in her class. One of my friends was arrested for punching a teacher. That's about it, I guess...I figured I'd have a better memory of high school than this. Junior year, I got my first job, my driver's license, and my first car, which I wrecked twice in the span of three months. On the last week of school, one of my study hall teachers (I had two study halls in the second semester after dropping physics) who didn't like me for reasons I can't be bothered to remember told us we could bring drinks in on the last day. So I bring a drink, and he tells me I can't have it, saying he would write me up if I didn't give it to him. I opted to keep the drink, and spent the rest of the period in ISD. I attended summer school for the first time between these two years after failing English second semester. Senior year, I earned my only athletic letter for throwing discus & shot put. I wish I had tried to do it in prior years, because I had a blast. I would often skip Government class, partly because it came right after my Cadet Teaching period and I was traveling from another school, and partly because my teacher was a prick. Ironically, I ended up having to attend on Senior Skip Day to earn extra credit and avoid failing the class. There were a couple memorable moments at the senior prom, one of which was three guys bringing the room to a standstill by doing N*SYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" dance along to the song, and the entire ballroom singing along to "Forgot About Dre." Overall, the first three years pretty much sucked, but I have plenty of positive memories from my senior year, enough to say I kind of miss high school.

    Middle School/Jr. High backtrack

Like most of you, middle school sucked for me, and I'm thankful it was only two years. Seventh grade was easily the worst year of all of school for me. I was suspended three times in the first semester, twice for fighting and once for calling my reading teacher a dumb bitch. I was on the football team, but it was a pretty horrible experience and I never tried it again. My CO2 car went undefeated in the races in Industrial Arts, but since I didn't have the fastest overall time I didn't get the automatic A for winning. Bullshit. In eighth grade, I joined the band, for the free trip to Kings' Island at the end of the year. I played the bass clarinet, and was in a class with all seventh-grade girls. I was a prominent member of the chess team, placing third in the school tourney, second in the city and seventh in the county, and played in the state finals on the B-team, first board. My Industrial Arts teacher was a drunken asshole who was busted by a student with vodka in his mug, which he claimed was "coffee." He sent me in the hall once for sliding across the sawdust-covered floor. He was fired the following year for either hitting a student or throwing a block of wood at one, I can't remember which. I've heard both stories. I skipped class for the first time, successfully, but was later ratted out by someone who overheard me discussing it with a friend. I was given a Saturday detention, and I kicked his ass following the eighth-grade dance. It's the only time I was ever caught skipping. Anyway, the only times I ever went back to that hell hole was for the yearly county chess tournaments, and driving my brother to-and-from.

    Elementary Backtrack

Late to the party with these threads. Went to three different kindergartens as my dad couldn't keep a job, starting and finishing in Anderson. In between, me and my mom stayed with her parents in Boyceville, Wisconsin for a while as he looked around, which was a nice getaway as my first K-teacher was a hideous cunt. My brother was born while we were up there. My only real memory of kindergarten was getting my head stuck in a tire at recess once. Changed schools again for first and second grade, living in Honey Creek and attending nearby Sulphur Springs. I was constantly in the office for hitting/kicking/kneedropping other kids, but other than that it was good times. On hot days, they sold Flintstone Push-ups at recess for a dime apiece. Milli Vanilli and NKOTB were on constant rotation on the bus. One day, I got the "bright" idea of hiding from the bus and attempting to walk to school, which was pretty stupid since it was about a 5-mile walk, half of which was on US 36. I think the bus came back and got me eventually. I lost my two front teeth while attempting to throw a brick over the clothesline outside. Not sure what prompted this. Two embarassing haircuts, the first was a Batman logo on the side of my head, the second was the buzzers screwing up and requiring that all my hair get buzzed off. One of my best friends down the street had an abandoned school bus in his backyard, which I thought was the coolest thing ever for some reason. Our house was a total piece of shit, and I was forced to sleep in the living room because the ceiling in my bedroom was leaking. The next person who moved in burned it down after leaving the stove on as he was out. Moved back to Anderson a week after second grade ended, and have lived here ever since. I was pretty pissed about the move for some time, but eventually got over it. Although, I do still sometimes think how it would have been had I stayed at Shenandoah. In third grade, some guy from Denmark came in and brought some turtle meat. That's honestly the only notable moment from third grade that comes to mind right now, aside from learning how to ride a bike. Won the school spelling bee in fourth grade, against all fifth and sixth-graders. In fifth grade, I got paddled for the first time, for throwing a kickball in the classroom. Also lost three recesses for kneeing a kid in the back and rendering him motionless for several minutes (with the kid's girlfriend being the one allowed to choose the punishment, real objective there), and four recesses for calling a lice-ridden female student a "fleabag". We must have watched Charlotte's Web at least once a month in fifth grade...I think I've watched it maybe once or twice since as a result. Sixth grade was undoubtedly the best year, the highlight being the field trip to Chicago. Went to Sears' Tower, had some fucking Chicago-style pizza, rode Lake Michigan, played NBA Jam on a 72-inch screen (I can't remember what this place was called, it's right on my tongue...I *think* it's called North Pier), and Rock 'N' Roll McDonald's. We would always wrestle at recess, which in one instance resulted in a broken wrist, forcing me to miss the first half of the little league season. Also competed in another regional spelling bee in sixth grade. I was the king of Number/Fraction Munchers and Spellevator in my school. Our graduation songs were Lean on Me by Bill Withers and Hero by Mariah Carey. Also, I won the cake walk every single year at the school carnival.

    This Week in Baseball 5/26 - 6/1

It would've been kinda neat to see Manny hold out a couple weeks until the Reds/Sox series, just for the possibility of two guys going for 600 and 500 in the same ballpark at the same time.

Pierce is going to go broke once this anti-flopping rule is installed.

    The knockoff thread

I just had a can of Mello Yello today out of a randomly placed pop machine as I was riding my bike. Vault is pretty much a repackaged version of Mello Yello.

Fines will be imposed for clear cases of flopping

We don't need to change the Hack-a-Shaq. Work on your goddamn free throws, and no one will use it on you anymore. Simple as that.

    The NBA Offseason Thread

There's already a separate topic for the flopping thing. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?showtopic=90977

I wonder how big of fines we're talking about here. Either way, this is better than the previous suggestion, which was calling technicals for flops. Looks like good news all around from this meeting.

Yeah, I'm guessing by the end of June, early July, they rattle off nine straight wins against divisional opponents and get right back in it. Isn't that how it's gone every year since 2004?

"All that bull(bleep)-ass calls they had out there. With Mike [Callahan] and Kenny [Mauer] -- you've all seen that (bleep)," Wallace said. "You saw them calls. The cats are flopping all over the floor and they're calling that (bleep). That (bleep) ain't basketball out there. It's all (bleeping) entertainment. You all should know that (bleep). It's all (bleeping) entertainment."

NBA Playoffs 2008 - Conference Finals

Well, I agree with that. More or less, I was just pointing out the obvious and saying that it's happened before with this team. I can't really predict what the Pistons will do, anyways, because of their Jekyll & Hyde tendencies that have already been mentioned. I think they're good enough to beat any of these three teams in a series, but who knows where their heads are going to be at. I'll go ahead and ask this question, since it's probably inevitable: If the Pistons fail again to make it to the Finals, should/will Flip get the boot?

NBA Playoffs 2008 - Conference Finals

fun fact: If the Celtics do close it out, they would become just the second team in the last 30 years (along with the '02 Nets) to make the Finals after missing the playoffs the previous year.

He still played well in game 7, and they still lost after blowing a late lead. They were also down 3-2 against Cleveland in '06, and New Jersey in '04, and won both.

    Where self-celebration happens.

Also, the banner is only present on the TSM Pro skin. If you hate it that much, you can change to the Original or Webber skin.

The Pistons were down 3-2 against Miami in '05, and won that series. I think there's still hope here
