AWA Wrestling back on the air
MillenniumMan831 replied to garfieldsnose's topic in General Wrestling
You sure are right about that, it was the 6-man tag from the night before. Would it have killed the AWA to tape matches using the same announcers in consecutive matches? For as much as people may or may not dislike Trongard, he had to have been beating his head against the wall commentating w/ some of these shmucks. Verne is shit, Greg is ok, Karch tries but he can be annoying, that local yocal promoter from WI is the pits. No wonder Lee Marshall got a gig, he's Gordon Solie next to these clowns. Kudos to Larry Nelson for combing his hair. I love how he and his guests seem to have no clue which major matches are in which city. "If I get my hands on (heel) in (random city), than I won't stop until they pull me off you!" Dennis Condrey had the world's greatest low blow sell against Wahoo . . . on his tippy-toes w/ his knees flailing in perfect rhythm. Last but not least, Madusa was lookin primo on Wed's show. That fuckin fag Karch was doing everything in his power to get Rod to focus on wrestling and Rod is all "I have to sit through this shit wrestling every goddamn night, so shut your fuckin mouth and let me rub one out to Madusa before the squash starts!" --- Well, he was thinkin it. -

And to hear Ray Stevens (or maybe it was Greg Gagne, I don't remember) refer to Rich as a man's man in the following studio segment makes it better. -

AWA Wrestling back on the air

I started DVRing the shows just for Nelson and Paul E. Hearing Nelson open the show by trying to explain the tag title situation was the real main event in my heart. Also funny that a few weeks ago, Wahoo and Zhukov had a chain match that "didn't settle anything" per Larry. Now that Zhukov has defected to the WWF, it was that very chain match that caused Zhukov to run from the AWA. -
Another fine lineup. It was just over a year ago when we'd be lucky to have 4 new hours for a month. This month has over 16 new hours. No complaints here. And the bonus matches after Raw are a nice touch. Hopefully w/ Duggan/Hercules, this leads to more SNME matches being added. Ripped through PTW. Nice plot where Monsoon has all the July 4th decorations and Heenan has nothing. "Heenan called and said he wanted the host's side decorated," professed the floor man. But never fear, as a crew member sets a ladder up behind The Brain just to put up one balloon . . . then leaves the ladder there the rest of the show. Heenan also ends up w/ a 2nd balloon, 2 rolls of ribbon, a nub of tape, and a sparkler. Also saw Patriot/Regal. Considering Bischoff and Ventura never got along (per Bischoff's book), they made a hell of an announcing team. They had a bet as to who would throw the 1st punch. Patriot did so Bischoff owed Jesse lunch. The clip also opened with a humorous line by Ventura (in delivery only) "Lord Steven from the Tower of Blackpool . . . so he lives in a big tower . . in front of a black pool?" Caught Rhodes/Windham from GAB88. First time I saw it in 10+ years. Didn't remember how one-sided it was w/ Rhodes squashing Windham until he got the claw in and that was virtually all the heat. Of course Rhodes fought out only to be KOed by Rugged Ronnie Garvin. Also fun to see JJ take an awkward bump from the apron to flat on his ass on the concrete floor w/ an awesome expression of agony and embarassment on his face. Only complaint I had other than the claw being on too long was the fact that Windham took 4 bumps on the concrete which Schiavone noted should take its toll on the champ only for him to casually slam Rhodes just seconds after. Eh well. All in all, a fun match with a little something for everyone. Nothing too notable on the Raws. Still nice to have the SuperStars feature match from the following weekend after the Raws. After the Ramon/Model IC Title rematch, Martel almost turned face bullying around Wippleman while sporting a 'house of fire' look on his face until his SurSeries team members came out and extinguished the flames. Surprised to hear Morris Day's "The Bird" not get overdubbed or skipped on Challenge #4. On the other side of the coin, apparently airing the Honky Tonk Man's 1st theme . . . the one he used until the Piledriver album came out is a big no-no. Flair/Savage from GAB95 was great fun. No one shows the fire while still selling his ass off like Savage, even in his later years. Watched Piper/Savage vs Hogan/Hart from GAB98. And I'm about to contradict my last statement. The only wrestler that looked like he belonged in 1998 was Hart. The other three just came across like the oldest, stinkiest of farts in appearance compared to Hart. The match wasn't putrid but nothing that should be on anyone's dvd.

Nelson - "And in just a little while, we're going to see a two-ring battle royal *shrugs* whatever that is" And Dangerously is exhausting Nelson with his promo. Some awful(ly good) impressions by Paul E. -
No biggie. Six days is more than enough time to recover from that for the NYC Parking Lot Brawl.

Damn, that's depressing. -
My biggest beef w/ everything storyline wise was the fact Joe was laid out two seconds after establishing himself as a badass. It'd be like Austin popping McMahon his first stunner then getting ambushed by DX before the segment ended.
-
If they had to have a clusterfuck cliffhanger so bad, they could have had Cornette come out (yeah, I know he wasn't there) to get Joe off Booker and have him get clocked by Joe, then have Sting come 1/2 way down the aisle to stare Joe down as the ppv came to a close.
-
That was shit. Did any ref call for a DQ? It was a fuckin mess. I'm quite fearful somehow they'll recognize a title change on Impact since no officials were present leaving the wife of a guy w/ a key to the city of Houston next in charge.
-
Well to be formal, it's Beer Money Inc.
-
As soon as I saw the fans come down the aisle w/ LAX shirts for the LAX/Beer Money match, I would have bet $100 they were paid off by Roode.

Either roasted chicken or the prime rib/steak toasted on white bread American cheese Double green peppers Double cucumbers No mayo/dressing

I guess this belongs in the Impact thread but since they reaired it on the preview show, I'll mention it here. I really hated how the KO Title match ended. Kong was rolled up w/ no pressure at all on her upper body. No reason she couldn't have rolled a shoulder up. I have no clue why they couldn't have her miss an avalanche and have her hit her head on the post or even just the buckle. Something to daze her, not have someone get out of a powerbomb attempt just to get pinned on a super weak rollup.

Re: Vampiro. A definitely agree w/ cabbage. But I would have loved to see WCW invest in a prolonged face push for Vampiro. The guy never really did anything for me in the ring but the crowds seemed very much into him. Plus, a vested vault to the top would show that WCW was willing to shake things up. I think that's why Russo was embrased by fans during his 1st stint and some of his 2nd. It felt like anything but same ol same ol Dubbya Cee Dubbya. And only Mt Dew addicts could actually sit through summer of 1999 shows w/o falling asleep. Russo may have made your eyes roll but at least they weren't shutting. Then again, I may be the only mark of senile President Flair on the board. -
Getting a statement from the bank on a savings account and seeing interest paid out. No matter how small, it's money for nothing (sorry Dire Straits).

Fuck, this TV Title Tournament is on par w/ any tournament TNA can whip up. A 3ish month 'tournament' with a point system with matches happening at house shows and tv. 5 points for pin/submission, -5 for losing. 2.5 for DQ/CO win, -2.5 for losing. .5 for a draw. Nelson suggested we keep score as the matches go on. I guess he's counting on a lot of AWA groupies to follow them on the road and guess which matches are tournament matches. Nelson says when two guys hit FIFTY points, they will wrestle for the title. Greg Gagne on commentary said plainly whomever had the most points at the end of the tournament would be champ. Just a mess. Oh yeah, Jammin Mitch Snow got 2.5 points for winning by DQ over Larry Z who's 2.5 in the hole. I can't wait to see if they actually update scores week-to-week or just hodge podge it until two wrestlers magically get to 50 points. -

Watching this late at night, I thought DJ was Brutus Beefcake circa 1989. Nelson: The winners of the match, JT Souther . . . Yes, I see the phone! And DJ Peterson! Awesome. Larry Nelson just doing his one-take pitches are tremendous. I imagine he had to have been a bitch to deal with. -

Yeah, Dangerously was awesome on last night's show. And that ring announcer (not Nelson) looked like he could be Bischoff's sleazier (imagine that) brother. -

So it took roughly a year but I finally grew to like ECW's song Don't Question My Heart.

So, who's on 2nd?
