    Steinbrenner bout to go off

Because he's willing to shore up his team's weaknesses by making trades and signing players?

    Loria pledges no fire sale

Looking at that list, the only players they need back are Pudge, Castillo, and Urbina. Urbina's the least necessary of the three, but since he's proven to be more reliable than Braden Looper, he should be brought back. I can see Encarnacion getting shipped out to cut costs, with the hope that Cabrera's really the answer. The payroll will have to expand some, but the Marlins should try to bring as many key players back as they can. They can't afford the negative publicity of another fire sale, especially with Loria already enjoying a sketchy reputation.

    Priest gets life in prison

She's pretty spot-on, actually. The Catholic Church finally took a look at this serious problem -- which has been going on for YEARS, all over the country, and has ruined many lives -- only recently. Their "solution," of course, was the limp-wristed "three tykes and you're out" policy, which has yet to do any good. I find it impossible that high leadership in the Church didn't know about some of these cases years ago. Fuck them, bring them up on conspiracy charges and let's see if THAT gets some meaningful change going.

    Anyone play poker?

Hell yes. I started a thread about this at SNKT, in fact. I play for money ($20 buy-in, no-limit Texas Hold'em) once a week, and I also play for money online, with UltimateBet. I've tried some of the other online places, and I like UB the best. Even the play-chip rooms are pretty good, if you don't want to play for real money.

MNF game might have to be moved

Figure what out? That CA sometimes has wildfires this time of year? What do you want, all football teams out of the state?

MNF game might have to be moved

L.A. was and still is getting hit by the fires. They're ravaging a good chunk of the state.

Does no one use Serials 2000 anymore? Not that I do, or anything... uh, I've hust heard that people do. Yeah, that's it.

    Most surprisingly good teams EVAH!

The 1989 Baltimore Orioles. In 1988, they set the record for most losses to start the season, losing an absurd 21 games in a row. No one thought they'd do anything the following season, but they hung with the Blue Jays until the last weekend of the season. "Why Not?"

That's a candidate for Forums Quote of the Week right there. Christ you've lowered your standards...

They said he's moved his hand. The good thing is that UM Hospital is nearby, if he needs to go there.

    OAO NFL Week 8 Thread

Is it just me, or do the Ravens always get the crappiest announcers on every network? We don't even get the B-team... it's more like the Z-team.

Tricycle-riding gunman tries to hijak car

Fair enough. It's an amusing story, certainly, but it's ultimately fluff. Oh, and Mario... I saw a plush Santa Cthulhu yesterday, but someone had already nabbed the last one when I came back to it.

    Burger King's Baguettes

I tried the Santa Fe Baguette at BK last night. It was good, but it didn't strike me as anything extraordinarily special. Besides, I think it's a little on the small side for the price they're charging... the caesar grilled sourdough sandwich is the same price and much bigger. I recommend trying it, because it IS good, but don't expect to be blown away. Real delis probably serve much better food on larger baguettes for a similar price.

    "Behind Blue Eyes"

Quite a few people, actually. Don't get me wrong: Halle's fine, and I wouldn't kick her out of bed before calling out for a long weekend. But she's not the be-all end-all of Hollywood hotties.

    "Behind Blue Eyes"

This song is dreadful. The Who's original was excellent, because of the emotion present in Daltrey's voice and Townsend's guitar. This remake has none of those qualities going for it, and the speak-and-spell addition is an abomination. Yes, Fred, we know who you are and who your shitty band is, and we're all the poorer for it.

    Topics in Current Events

I think all three of those are fluff. The McDonald's story has the outrage factor going for it, but it doesn't change the fact that it's an isolated incident that few people will give two pins about.

    Topics in Current Events

Ok, back on the original topic: Keep CE relevant, and keep the fluff out.

    Topics in Current Events

I'm getting that sentence tattoed on my penis...in size 20 font....in one line (oh yeah...I can do it) and then post a thread about it in CE. That sir, would not be fluff. That would be news. My penis would then not only be fun, but educational. You could offer to show it off in schools, then, since it would certainly be more educational than one of their crappy textbooks. Then again, that might not be such a good idea...

    TMQ Fired from ESPN.com

Sure. He made his own bed and now he has to lie in it. As a fan of the column and Easterbrook's journalism (he's also written some dashed good articles for The New Republic, which is where his blog is hosted), I just think it sucks that he got shitcanned. And I think it's ridiculous that Eisner can't deal with criticism to the point that he has expressly forbidden anyone who works for him to say one bad thing about him. Kane, free speech isn't an issue here, since the president of a privately-owned media conglamerate can basically dictate what his employees can and cannot say.
