IDRM, this is very long, but if you have time, I'd like to know how you'd respond to this: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05573a.htm Re: evolution, how did we get to where we are now? How set against it are you? My college bio book is spewing some b.s. but it's hard to dismiss much of it. I'm still impressed with this thread.

I'm sensing some of the same questions as usual from the nonbelieving group. I hope those in that camp know that not everyone who believes in God, Jesus, etc also believes everything in the Bible to be literally true. I mean parts of the Bible were lifted from Enuma Elish and Gilgamesh. It says that it's sinful to grow two crops in the same field or wear clothes containing two fibers. The Old Testament is important really for establishing a line to King David, and that is important only to cultures that believe royalty is essential for divinity, i.e. not ours. What's actually important is the message of Jesus. Obviously, there are four different gospels written at four different times. Differing numbers of Apostles and differing descriptions of the Resurrection aren't detrimental. The important thing is the fact that he had followers and the fact that he resurrected. And again, the Bible has flaws. But this takes us back to YPOV's point of why Catholicism works for some of us. The claim of an apostolic church allows the religion to not pin itself on proving the entire Bible to be literally true. As long as Mary, Jesus, and Peter are in there, we're ok. This is continuing to be a great thread, btw.

This is an incredible thread. Okay IDRM... How do you explain Enuma Elish and Gilgamesh? Can you elaborate or point me to some links? Throw in saints here as well ... Most of these people are ASKING Mary to pray for them, not PRAYING to her or worshipping her. I thought the calendar year at the time was shorter. You sure? Please do.

Demonstrate some of these. I'm aware that the Bible never actually mentions things like confessions and a few other Catholic beliefs, but I'm curious as to what the other "demonstratably false" aspects are. Well for pagan customs, the Catholics assimilated the springtime feast/celebration of fertility and called it Easter. They stole Christmas as well. They just adopted the 25th of December as the birthday of Christ, despite there being no recorded evidence ever found, in the Bible or anywhere else, that suggests this as being factual. Christmas, I believe, was originally a Roman celebration in regards to the 'renewal of the Sun'. However, I'd have to look into to it for anymore details on its' history. UYI Question: Do you think Catholic clergy denies that? Because I can tell you for a fact that they don't. The MEANING of each holiday was not stolen. The DATE of each celebration was chosen specifically to attract members of the Pagan tradition.

Hence the quotes around "God"?

Being killed in the name of God is not the same as being killed by God.

Right... because it's God's fault...

Unfortunately there ARE people that have hoped for the 1000 death count and rising unemployment because it suits their politics.

A few observations: 1. Dwyane Wade is NOT Kobe Bryant. Have fun Diesel! 2. My opinion of Richard Jefferson is in the toilet. 3. We can't shoot. 4. LeBron and Melo have a long way to go. 5. A complete collapse here may be the catalyst to finally improving the NBA. Shooting, not simply scoring, seriously needs to be re-emphasized. -
Remember when killing 30,000 people was genocide?

Oh, you mean the ones that aren't really BLACK... I wonder if the anti-war will approve of giving the finger to the UN, EU, etc, in THIS case? -
I'm so glad the speech mistakes made by Bush are just surface mistakes, rather than, you know, faulty POLICY or EVASIVENESS.

Kerry did do something (apparently)
Spicy McHaggis replied to Rob E Dangerously's topic in Current Events
I bet you guys would react differently if this were about child molesting John Kerry: Joe Voter: Why do you think Kerry is suppressing that report? George Bush: I don't know. There are many theories about it. The most interesting theory that I've heard so far -- which is nothing more than a theory, it can't be proved -- is that he raped 11-year old children nightly. Now who knows what the real situation is? But the trouble is, by suppressing that kind of information, you lead to those kind of theories, whether they have any truth to them or not, and eventually, they get repeated as fact. So I think the senator is taking a great risk by suppressing the key information that needs to go to the commission. -
Thanks Kage, sorry about that...

Is this baseball? Who gives a flying fuck about STATS? The substance of what these people do is more important. If Senator Kerry is stupid enough to voluntarily bring up his record, he'll be beaten easily. -
