    Weekend Box Office Report

Halloween being Friday was pretty bad for everyone's numbers, but is Zack and Miri Make a Porno considered a huge disappointment at 10.6? It did slightly better than the Clerks 2 $10 million opening, and just missed the Jay and Silent Bob $11 million weekend, but they had to be expecting more, right?

    The Hockey Thread - October

I think it's officially "on" next time the Penguins and Capitals play. There was last game's strange Ovechkin-Malkin showdowns, Crosby going after Ovechkin after the game, and now Alexander Semin has officially joined the party:

    NFL Week 9

I just saw the AP article today about how Joey Porter is currently leading the NFL in sacks and is "on pace" to break the single season sacks record. I didn't even realize he was having such a good year. I doubt he breaks the record, but good for Joey. He'll always be a favorite of mine and I hated seeing all the talk about how terrible a free agent signing he was last year. Also, when will the NFL ever stop:

    NFL Week 9

Pittsburgh-Washington is a really interesting matchup. They look like the 2 least healthy teams in the league right now, but have managed to hang in just about every game so far. The Steelers are already missing 2 starters on the offensive line, corner Bryant McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall is done for the year, Willie Parker is still a question mark even though he was supposed to play week 7, Ryan Clark separated his shoulder this week but expects to play, and the long-snapper situation hasn't been sorted out yet. Aaron Smith is probably the most underrated defensive lineman in the league and seems to be the biggest factor in that dominating run defense based on the end of last season, but he's dealing with a very serious family issue and apparently just showed up at the stadium Sunday after not having practiced all week. He'll have to make his decision earlier this week since they're on the road. Santonio Holmes is supposed to be back this week assuming there's no discipline from the league. On the Redskins side Shawn Springs and Jason Taylor are both expected to miss the game. Santana Moss has had the hamstring issues pop up again, Portis has some kind of ankle issue, and their left tackle Chris Samuels missed last week and is supposed to need some kind of surgery. All three of them are supposed to give this week a try, but how effective they will be seems a bit uncertain at this point. They should hopefully both benefit from the extra day off this week and maybe play at something closer to full strength. I'm hoping Green Bay-Tennessee will be carried in my area, although I doubt it. I'm sure we'll get Giants-Cowboys as the 4:00 game since for some reason we get the Cowboys every single week no matter who they play or when. I don't think I know more than 2 or 3 Cowboys fans in the area, but they've even shown Dallas games opposite the Steelers on a couple occasions.

Did the Colts seriously just pass on the 50 yard field goal to tie it?

    NFL Week 8

I think the worst celebration penalty was on the "soccer" celebration in the Saints game. I guess it's basically the same thing as the TO call from week 1, but the NFL are supposed to be trying to establish themselves overseas and the guy plays to the London crowd for 2 seconds and it's a 15 yard penalty. The fans cheered like crazy for the celebration and went nuts when the penalty was called.

A receiver is considered "defenseless" if he doesn't have 2 feet on the ground. For the hit to be illegal the defender has to "launch" at the receiver. The call in the Steelers-Giants game was a pretty textbook definition of the rule. I didn't see the play in question in the Texans game, so I'm not sure there. It's another case of the right call being made based on a stupid rule.

Is there any chance that the outside linebacker is actually a better long snapper than say...the center? Then after that they show ILB James Farrior practicing his long snaps.

2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays

When's the last time a World Series matchup seemed this close through 3 games? Even the recent ones that have gone 6 or 7 have featured blowouts in some of the early games. I think maybe Yankees-Mets in 2000, and that one only went 5 games.

Pittsburgh should probably never be ranked nationally. They always end up playing horribly when they are. They're down 48-31 to Rutgers right now at the end of the 3rd Quarter. Mike Teel threw 6 TD passes. LeSean McCoy has answered with 4 rushing TDs, but they're down to the #2 QB.

    The Office Season 5

Were Ryan and Kelly both missing the whole episode? Maybe I just didn't notice them. Now that I think about it there might have been a quick non-speaking appearance from the side of Ryan's head when Jim was listening to Pam's message, but I didn't see either of them during the auction or anything.

    Halloween Candy

That list seems pretty bad to me. I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoy Smarties, Dum Dums can be fine depending on the flavor, no problem with tootsie rolls, candy corn or candy being fun sized, and I really like Laffy Taffy

    NFL Week 8

I've concluded today that Terrell Suggs might be the dumbest player in the league. First there was the widely reported "bounty" comment about Hines Ward which even if it doesn't draw a fine already will at least draw a little extra attention from the league which is definitely not something you want, especially the way things have been going recently. Then of course there's this:

Ref Makes Tackle During SEC Game

It was a first and goal from the 8 at the end of the half. South Carolina ended up scoring a TD on the drive, but it came down to them going for it on fourth and goal from the 1.

It looks so intentional that it has to be an accident.

At least there's not a useless day off in Philadelphia between games 4 and 5.

Unbelievable outing from David Price. 3 Ks and the Jason Bay walk should have been ruled a strikeout too. He looked unhittable tonight.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Wow. I'm a fan of his and kind of keep up with what he's doing, but I had no idea he'd gotten so fat. This is probably as big as I've ever seen him. http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight_Show_with_J...-101708/772903/

    NFL Week 7

I love that every story I see anywhere this week is about guys getting fined. The latest is Joey Porter's $20,000 fine. I don't even understand what he said wrong here: “I’m looking for an apology or something on Tuesday or Wednesday on NFL Network,” Porter said, “but it will be too late by then. The game’s over. That point in time, I know for sure that I had both his arms when the ball came out. I mean, it wasn’t by accident. I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t review that play.”” The play he's talking about is the play at the end of the Dolphins- Texans game where Porter made Schaub fumble, but Hochuli ruled incomplete pass. It would have had to be a booth review and it would have ended up being Hochuli's Chargers-Denver ruling again. I love the NFL's let them keep making mistakes without penalty and don't let anyone ever say anything about it policy.

    The Hockey Thread - October

Is there some history between Malkin and Ovechkin in Russia that I'm not aware of? Every time they play it seems like Ovechkin is trying to murder him in the middle of the game. Yesterday he was flying around taking 20 steps and charging at Malkin only to have Malkin duck him at the last second. Is there some backstory or have they just decided they don't like each other?

Apparently Willie Parker might miss this week's game again because he reinjured his knee stepping in a hole during practice. Why is there a hole on the Steelers practice field?

It's 3 different album covers and a vinyl version of each. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?_d...ries&ks=960 Edit--I guess now they've take off the third cover and it's only showing 2 for some reason. It actually has an image for one of the covers though.

    NFL Week 7

Oh I know that, but what I'm saying is it's not right to blame Goodell for trying to improve the quality of life for those players by making those "dumb" calls. Hines Ward, IIRC, has built a reputation as a liberty taking WR. Maybe he simply got caught on tape during a recent game taking a liberty or two that the referees wasn't seeing. If that's the case I have no problem with it. The issue is that the fines didn't come with any additional explanation other than just general rough play the past 2 games. There was no video cited, no specific actions mentioned; nothing. Mike Tomlin has asked the league to send video of the specific actions that lead to the fines so they can at least try to avoid them in the future.

It's nice to see that Jerry Jones learned his lesson on the Joey Galloway deal. Well at least he isn't giving up two first rounders this time.
