Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid arrived in my mailbox today, and on wednesday Kill Bill vol. 1 will arrive (it isn't released on DVD in Sweden until then).

The OAO Kill Bill Vol. 2 thread

I'm currently very upset that the film doesn't open until next week in Sweden. Lucky bastards, getting to see the film a week before I do...

    Some Help on Some Bands/Musicians...

On MC5 I pretty much agree with Edwin on getting Kick Out the Jams. I prefer the Stooges over-all to the MC5, but still, Kick Out the Jams is a really good album that you should probably pick up (though I personally think that the album peaks a bit early). As for the Kinks, the first two albums are fun, but a bit patchy at times. The Kink Kontroversy is REALLY good with a couple of great songs. Oddly enough, I've never heard Face to Face, which is supposedly some kind of masterpiece. Then you hit the Holy Trinity of albums - Something Else by the Kinks, The Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur; or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire. Get these albums now. All of them are absolutely stuffed with great songs and are pretty much the peak for both the band and for Ray Davies as a songwriter. Afterwards they went on a gradual decline, though there's some good stuff to be found still (Lola vs Powerman and the Moneygoround is a good album, and there are some really good songs on Everybody's in Showbiz, though the rest of the album is quite lackluster). And as a former progrock fan in my youth, I feel I can give some advice on Yes. These three albums are worth getting: The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge. The rest I remember finding to be rather dreadful but YMMV and all that.
  11. Last night I watched: The Great Dictator - which is still hilarious after three viewings. Celine and Julie Go Boating - which is one of my top five favourite movies ever.
  12. Showdown in Little Tokyo was on tv last night in Sweden, so I decided to watch it since it was one of my favourite movies when was eleven. And it certainly wasn't any good, but for some reason I can't really dislike it. Besides, it features one of my new favourite lines: Capt.: "So you lost all the suspects because you were too busy wailing on eachother", Dolph Lundgren: "Except for this one and he just broke his own neck". That one had me laughing non stop for several minutes.
  13. Last night I watched The Testament of Dr Mabuse, which was excellent.

    Jazz

I really like the little of Varese that I've heard. I've been meaning for a long time to get more into jazz. I've mainly just listened a bit to the usual suspects; Davis, Coltrane, Mingus et al, and liked their music immensely.

    A Little More About TEW

I downloaded it a while ago and I'm still just setting up my own fed to play with but goddamn does it look amazing. Too bad I can't afford to buy it until the 25th.

How long have you watched wrestling?

I was always interested in watching wrestling ever since I first heard of it. Then in the fall of 1993 a tv channel here in Sweden started showing the WWF regularly until after the Royal Rumble of 1994, after which they switched to WCW as former Swedish amateur wrestling great Frank Andersson signed with WCW. They then stopped showing WCW in early 1996, but then british TNT started showing Nitro, which they kept doing until right about after the Fingerpoke of Doom. Since then I've had to rely on RecordTV (while it was around), tapes and downloading stuff off the Internet to get my wrestling fix.

  20. I just got back from a screening of an old Milos Forman film called The Firemen's Ball, which was rather hilarious. I'll probably end up getting this on DVD sooner or later.

    Nerd Test

Whoa, and I was just guessing for about three quarters of the test.
  22. More Ingmar Bergman movies for me today: Cries and Whispers - This was VERY good, would probably rank rather highly on my favourite Bergman movies list, if I felt like making one. Autumn Sonata - Eh. It was well acted and stuff, but to me it was a tad dull and it just felt like Bergman going through the motions. Fanny and Alexander - This was very good as well and would have been a very worthy end for his career had this really been his last film.
  23. I watched the following movies last night: The Silence - This was rather stunningly shot and constructed, I liked it a great deal. Persona - HOLY CRAP! Why have I not watched this before? This was excellent and has replaced Wild Strawberries as my favourite Ingmar Bergman movie. For a Few Dollars More - About 18000 different kinds of cool. One of those movies I can watch a thousand times and still enjoy.
  24. Any Which Way You Can was showing on swedish tv tonight so I decided to watch it. After groaning my way through the film (how could I once have liked that film? Granted, I was nine at the time, but still) I decided I should watch a good Clint Eastwood movie next, so I pulled out The Outlaw Josey Wales, one of my favourites.
